Suspected cultist docked for threatening woman over sex (DailyTrust)
A suspected cultist on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja magistrates’ court over alleged threat to the life of a woman who refused to have sex with him. Akeem Lawal, 35, who claimed to be a fashion designer, is standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, unlawful society and threat to life.
The prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the accused vowed to kill Miss Dooshima Williams if she would not succumb to his request to have sex with him.
Emuerhi told the court that Lawal committed the offences at 10pm on May 12 at Block 5, Olusegun Olusemo St., Parkview, Ikoyi, Lagos. Emuerhi said the accused conspired with others still at large to commit the offence Read more
Hoodlums burgle Ogun politician’s office in Lagos (Punch)
Some hoodlums have reportedly burgled the office of an Ogun State politician, Adepeju Akinyemi, on NBC Road, Ebute, Ikorodu, Lagos State. Punch Metro learnt that the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, June 19.
Akinyemi, who spoke to our correspondent on Wednesday, said he had resumed work for business when he observed that his office had been broken into. He said, “The robbers broke down my door because the key was too strong for them. When I entered, I realised that they had carted away a lot of things, including my laptop, television and speakers. In fact, they ransacked the whole office and scattered my things. I used the stolen equipment for Ikorodu Oga Radio, an online community station I have been running for about two years. Read more
Lagos hotel deducts workers’ pensions without remittance, owes gratuities (Punch)
Ex-staff members of a hotel in FESTAC Town, Lagos, have called out the management of the facility, Chelsea Suites Limited, for allegedly refusing to pay their gratuities.
The former workers also lamented that while they were in the employ of the hotel, deductions were made from their salaries without corresponding remittances to their pension funds administrators.
Punch Metro gathered that the company in its conditions of service stated that certain percentage would be paid to staff members, who had spent five years and above, upon retirement or resignation. Read more
Husband ‘beats’ expectant wife to death 4 months after wedding (Nation)
Barely four months after marriage, a husband, Samuel Mgbeodinma, has allegedly beaten his wife, Gloria, to death in Lagos.
The incident occurred at Ikotun in Alimosho Local Government Area of the state on Saturday night shortly after the Nigeria-Croatia World Cup match.
The woman was said to have hit her head on the floor after being pushed by her husband. Mgbeodinma allegedly bundled her remains into his car, drove to his parents’ residence at Egbeda, parked and left without saying anything. His in-laws were said to have come for their daughter’s body at noon on Sunday.
The cause of the couple’s scuffle could not be ascertained at press time last night. Read more
Man impersonates senator on Facebook, defrauds Nigerians (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Joel Asabor for allegedly defrauding some Nigerians through a fake recruitment into the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Punch Metro learnt that Asabor, who was based in Delta State, impersonated the Senator representing Anambra South Constituency of Anambra State, Andy Uba, in whose name he opened a Facebook account. T
hrough the Facebook account, the suspect reportedly conversed with job seekers who added him as friends on the platform.
Our correspondent gathered that the victims were asked to pay between N200,000 and N350,000 for processing of employment into oil companies, as they were promised juicy incentives, including a salary of N850,000 per month. Read more
N118m ‘dud cheque’: Police oppose Lagos prophet’s N4m claim (Nation)
An Ikeja High Court will, on Thursday, hear the police application seeking to dismiss a N4 million damages claim filed by Prophet Samson Ayorinde of the World Evangelism Church at Ojota in Lagos State.
The claimants – Ayorinde, Registered Trustees of World Evangelism Incorporated and Reverend Harold Chinoyerem – filed the suit before Justice A. A. Adesanya through their lawyer Emmanuel B. Benjamin.
The defendants are: Oludare Aturamu, Mrs. Kemi Adesanya, Smart Link Property Services, Lagos State Police Commissioner, the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (SCIID) at Panti in Lagos, the Officer-in-Charge of Assistant Commissioner Section and a Superintendent of Police (SP), Alhaji Aminu, of SCIID at Panti. Lagos police boss sacks anti-cultism squad over corruption (Guardian)
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Imohimi Edgal, has redeployed the officer and men in charge of the anti-cultism squad over alleged unprofessional conducts and corruption.
The police spokesman in Lagos, CSP Chike Oti, said in a statement that the move was to reposition and reinvigorate the command’s anti-cultism squad.
According to him, reorganisation of the squad was necessitated by the unprofessional conducts of its personnel and corruption in the unit.
The Guardian gathered that he was in the habit of collecting bribe to release suspected cultists. Read more
Mushin residents cry out over ‘frequent police assault’ (Nation)
Some residents of Ilasamaja in Mushin, Lagos, have raised the alarm over what they called incessant assault by policemen.
They appealed to police commissioner Imohimi Edgal to save them from the policemen.
The residents of Oremeji, Kekere-Owo, Olusanya, Lamina, Owoseni Ishola and Waheed Apesin streets, Ilasamaja alleged that the officers from different commands had turned their areas into Automated Teller Machine (ATM) portals. “They come to arrest people on sight and demand heavy amount for bail,” they said.
A raid, carried out on Friday was described as the height of insensitivity displayed by the officers. Read more
Driver, 45 arraigned for alleged manslaughter in Lagos (Independent)
The Police in Lagos on Tuesday arraigned a 45-year-old driver, Blessing Ihende, at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly causing the death of a 39-year-old man, Alloh Alloysius.
Ihende, who resides at No. 9, Efalaye St., Shasha in Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of reckless driving and manslaughter.
The prosecution, Sgt. Michael Unah, alleged that the accused recklessly drove a van with registration no. AGL 909 XM in a dangerous manner and damaged a TVS tricycle (Keke Napep) with Reg. No. EKY 883 QH, belonging to one Godwin Idahosa.
Unah told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 21 at about 6am at Adeniyi Jones Avenue in Ikeja, Lagos. Read more
Eid-el-Fitr tragedy: Visitor stabbed to death in Lagos (Vanguard)
It was a sad Eid-El-Fitri celebration for the Idowu family, following the discovery of the lifeless body of their visitor in front of their home at 1 Modupe Street in Alapere area of Lagos.
The deceased, Taofeek Sosanya, (28) as gathered came from Iperu in Ogun State to celebrate the just concluded El-id Fitri with his friend, Femi Idowu, with a plan to return to his base on Monday.
However, on Sunday night, the visitor was said to have left his friend’s apartment to receive fresh air outside, as there was power cut. He was said to have slept off in the process. Read more
Pickpockets target policeman, arrested (Punch)
A 28-year-old suspected pickpocket, Ndubuisi Nsuka, has begged the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, for forgiveness after he was arrested with two other members of his gang while attempting to steal from a policeman attached to the command.
Punch Metro learnt that the Imo State indigene and his accomplices – Saheed Shittu and Usman Abubakar – belonged to a syndicate, which specialised in using a tricycle to dispossess commuters of their valuables.
While Abubakar rode the tricycle, Nsuka and Shittu allegedly pretended to be passengers and stole from their victims.
