1 drowns as flood takes over popular Abuja estate (Nation)

There was pandemonium in Abuja when a heavy downpour, which started as early as 6am left the popular Trademore estate submerged. 

Property worth millions were damaged and destroyed during the flood with residents scampering to safety.

Many residents looked dejected and helpless when The Nation visited on Friday afternoon. 

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed to reporters at the estate that a Peugeot 406 driver with a registration no. YLA 681 FS was drowned in the flood while four other persons were rescued. Read more 

Tribunal admits Chicago University, NYSC certificates against Tinubu (DailyTrust)

The Presidential Election Petitions Court has admitted certified copies of academic and work records of President Bola Tinubu tendered by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

The documents include a B.Sc certificate from the Chicago State University, NYSC Discharge Certificate, and Mobil Nigeria Oil Plc certificate of service.

The PDP had brought the documents through their subpoenaed witness, Mike Enahoro Ebah Esq, who noted that the documents were “purportedly” obtained by Tinubu but bore the name ‘Bola Adekunle Tinubu’. Read more 

Lagos deputy gov, Hamzat took US oath of allegiance-Immigration lawyer tells tribunal (Vanguard)

A United States Immigration lawyer, Mrs Olubusayo Fasidi, has told the Lagos State Election Petition Tribunal that Lagos Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, took an oath of allegiance in the U.S. to renounce Nigerian citizenship.

Fasidi, a Nigerian, on Thursday, was led in evidence by Dr Olumide Ayeni (SAN), counsel to the petitioner, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party.

According to the witness, Hamzat, the third respondent in the petition, also applied for naturalisation as contained in Forms 8CFR/337 and N400. Read more

NPA rehabilitates 15-year abandoned water plant in Lagos (Leadership)

After over 15 years of abandonment, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), on Thursday, commissioned the rehabilitated 2.4 million gallons per day water plant in Apapa.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the water plant in Apapa, the managing director of NPA, Mohammed Bello-Koko, said the commissioning is the beginning of the Authority’s long-term plans to enhance infrastructure and living conditions across Port locations.

He, however, reiterated the management’s intention to intensify necessary collaborations and partnerships geared towards the improvement of lives of the authority’s stakeholders and communities in a sustainable manner. Read more 

Appeal Court reinstates ex-DG NIA, Dauda (Guardian)

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Thursday reinstated former Director General of  National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mohammed Dauda who was removed.

Justice Peter Ige, who delivered the judgement, said the evidence leading to the dismissal of Dauda was frivolous and lacking in merit.

The Judge resolved all the contentious issues against NIA in favour of Dauda who is a respondent in the suit. Read more

Houses, vehicles submerged as floods hit estate in Abuja (Channels)

Houses and vehicles have been submerged following flash floods that hit Trademore Estate in Abuja.

Channels Television reports that estate residents in Lugbe along Airport Road in the nation’s capital again suffered a flash flood as an early morning rain submerged houses and vehicles.

The rain which started around 9 am on Friday caused a traffic jam as residents were trapped in their houses. Read more

Muhammad Garuba, former Commissioner for Information in Kano State under the Abdullahi Umar Ganduje administration has said the ex-governor is not concerned by the state government’s decision to reopen the investigation of the dollar video that purportedly depicts him receiving bribes.

The chairman of the Kano State Public Complaint and Anti Corruption Commission, Barrister Muhuyi Magajin Rimin-Gado, had pledged to reopen the investigation against the former governor.

“Every incumbent governor, deputy governor or president has immunity. Now that limit is no more. The commission will do what is necessary,” Rimin-Gado said. Read more

“I think Scooter took offense to it, because we ran into each other, and I think he reached out at the time to my manager. I was like, ‘It wasn’t anything against him,'” she explained. “When she came out and said that and I heard about it, I was like, ‘Whatever. Re-record them. Your fans will support you.’ Uh, they did. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the Marvel film star revealed that he is apprehensive about the use of artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry.

“People just started worrying about that? I asked about that a long time ago,” the actor, 74, told the publication, before explaining how he has had his body “scanned” for Star Wars and Marvel projects.

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles has announced a special initiative to help save Rockwood Music Hall, the long-running independent New York City music venue, which is in danger of closing.

The #PreserveRockwood benefit concert series will launch on June 30 with Bareilles and will be an opportunity to see artists perform in the venue’s intimate setting while helping to keep it alive. 100% of the proceeds from the shows will be donated to Rockwood to help continue a space for independent and emerging artists to perform.

James Cameron is speaking out following the tragic news regarding the 21-foot submersible, Titan, that was carrying five men on a dive to explore the wreckage site of the Titanic.

On Thursday, Rear Admiral John Mauger, the commander of the U.S. The Coast Guard announced that all aboard are presumed “dead” following a “catastrophic implosion.”

Kremlin rejects Macron charges that it is ‘‘destabilising’’ Africa (AlJazeera)

The Kremlin has rejected allegations by French President Emmanuel Macron that Russia is a destabilising force in Africa as he cited Moscow’s deployment of mercenary groups there.

Management of Rangers International FC of Enugu has given its players and the technical team a three-week break as the season came to an end with the Federation cup final in Asaba.

This is contained in a statement from the club Media Officer Norbert Okolie in Enugu on Friday which said that the club’s Administrative Secretary, Ferdinand Ugwuarua, disclosed this on Thursday.

Following a meeting of the FIA General Assembly in Cordoba, it has been reported that several changes could be made to the Formula 1 calendar in 2024, including two Saturday night races.

As Liberty Media continue to push for the pinnacle of motorsport to become more modernised, it has been discussed in Cordoba about whether the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix could be pushed to a Saturday.
