1 feared dead as #EndSARS protest turns violent in Surulere (Punch)

Protest against police brutality, extortion and extra-judicial killings turned violent in the Surulere area of Lagos State on Monday.

The PUNCH gathered that police officers shot indiscriminately to disperse the protesters.

In the process, two of the protesters were reportedly hit by gunshots.

One of those hit by the gunshot has been reported dead.

The protesters had since shared pictures and videos of the victims on social media.

However, efforts to reach the Lagos Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, proved abortive. Read more

The agitation for the scrapping of the now-dissolved Special Anti Robbery (SARS) unit of the Nigeria Police continued in different parts of Nigeria on Monday.

As early as 4:00 am, #EndSARS protesters arrived the Lekki toll gate in Lagos State. The protesters in their numbers brought a halt to the commercial activity of the toll gate.

They continued to chant ‘End SARS’ with many carrying placards with ‘stop the killing, end SARS, stop police brutality.

Motorists were diverted to an alternative road to gain access into Lekki town after hours in traffic gridlock. Read more

All classes in Lagos schools can now resume – Govt (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has approved the resumption of all classes in pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools.

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, announced this in a statement on Monday.

She said the remaining classes in both public and private schools in the state can resume from Monday, 19th of October, 2020.

She enjoined school owners and managers of all private schools to ensure that they are cleared by the Office of Education Quality Assurance before physical resumption. Read more

Driver, passenger die in lone accident on Third Mainland Bridge (Vanguard)

The driver of a commercial bus and an unidentified male passenger were Monday, confirmed dead while other occupants of the vehicle were injured during a lone accident involving a bus on the Third Mainland Bridge.

The unfortunate incident occurred at about 6.55am, few hours after both sections of the bridge were opened after three days of being shut for maintenance.

According to eye witnesses’ account, the  the driver of the bus with number plate GGE 95 XY, painted in White colour,  was driving inward Iyana-Oworo when one of the rear tyres burst due to reckless driving. Read more

Early Monday accident claims 4 lives on Lagos-Ibadan expressway (Guardian)

Four persons were confirmed dead on Monday in an early morning accident involving a Mazda bus and a Daf truck around Saapade bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Mr Ahmed Umar, the FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun confirmed the incident to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta.

Umar said that the accident occurred at 2:50am and was caused by route violation and dangerous driving.

He explained that the truck driver drove wrongfully against traffic and had a head-on collision with the Mazda bus. Read more

The National Association of Seadogs, NAS, has taken a swipe at the senate for not meting out the appropriate sanctions to Senator Elisha Abbo of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP from Adamawa State, who was given N50 million fine by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja for slapping a nursing murder last year.

NAS, also known as Pyrates Confraternity said that the senate is expected to be made up of senior citizens that have distinguished themselves in diverse fields and ought to bring their wealth of experience to bear in the quality of bills debated and passed into law, adding that Senator Elisha Abbo’s conduct was a blemish on the hallowed body. Edo Assembly impeaches speaker, Okiye (Punch)

The Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Francis Okiye, has been impeached.

His removal followed a motion by the Majority Leader of the House, Henry Okhurobo, that Okiye be removed over allegations of high-handedness.

His impeachment letter was signed by nine out of the 10-member Assembly present at a brief sitting on Monday.

The House immediately elected Marcus Onobun, representing Esan West State Constituency, as the new Speaker. Read more

The House of Representatives says the increase in subscription by  Multichoice/DSTV, is unacceptable, insists on Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO).

Rep. Unyime Idem, Chairman, House of Representatives Ad Hoc committee investigating the non implementation of PAYGO Tariff said this on Monday in Abuja.

He said that given the current situation as occasioned by COVID-19 pandemic, Multichoice/DSTV should suspend the increase in the monthly subscription. Read more

World Health Organisation issues cautionary advice on imposing ‘total lockdown’ (Metro)

The World Health Organisation (WHO) appears to have changed its thinking on a core part of dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. As countries around the world deal with the prospect of more time spent isolating, one expert has said total lockdown isn’t the way to go. Dr. David Nabarro, a Special Envoy of the WHO’s director-general on Covid-19 has argued ‘too many restrictions damage people’s livelihoods and provoke resentment.’ Furthermore, he told The Spectator that ‘we in the World Health Organisation do not advocate lockdowns as the primary means of control of this virus.’ Read more

Paul Milgrom and Robert Wilson have won the 2020 Nobel Economics Prize for their work on auction theory.

The Stanford University game theorists have helped in developing formats for the sale of aircraft landing slots, radio spectrums, and emissions trading.

Margaret Nolan, iconic for her role as Dink in the James Bond film “Goldfinger,” has died at 76.

Her son, Oscar Deeks, confirmed the news that she had passed away on Oct. 5, Variety reported. She is also survived by another son, Luke O’Sullivan

The former glamour model, who briefly posed under the name Vicky Kennedy, also gained fame for her role in The Beatles movie “Hard Day’s Night,” and in the family comedy “Carry On” film franchise.

After her sensual performance next to Sean Connery’s James Bond in “Goldfinger” in 1964, the blond bombshell would later go on to pose for Playboy. Read more

An Italian teenager who used the internet to spread his faith is on a path to becoming the Catholic Church’s first millennial saint.

Carlo Acutis, who died of leukaemia in 2006 aged 15, has already been dubbed “the patron saint of the internet”.

Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has slammed his co-stars for ‘acting like divas’ in between takes on the fantasy series.  The actor, who played Jaime Lannister in the Westeros fantasy tale, revealed that some of his fellow stars had become known for throwing strops behind the scenes, especially when their outfits got too uncomfortable.

Bangladesh to introduce death penalty for rape (BBC)

Bangladesh is to introduce the death penalty for rape cases, following days of protests about the country’s high level of sexual violence against women.

Law Minister Anisul Haq told the BBC that the president would issue an ordinance on Tuesday making it law.

There was widespread outrage in Bangladesh last week after footage of a brutal gang assault on a 37-year-old woman went viral on social media.

At least 1,000 rapes have been reported in Bangladesh this year, activists say. Read more

Nigeria’s Ogenyi Onazi looks to get his career ‘out of reverse gear’ (BBC)

Danish Superliga club SønderjyskE has offered Nigeria international midfielder Ogenyi Onazi a new way forward after a four-year spell in Turkey blighted by injury.

Injuries have seen Onazi’s career look like it has been thrown into reverse – moving from Lazio in Italy’s Serie A to Turkish sides Trabzonspor and then Denizlispor and now onto Denmark.

Despite the issues the 27-year-old remains philosophical about things and believes the Danish club are the ideal platform to revive his career.

“Injuries are inevitable because it’s something that happens a lot in football, but it’s not been fair to me,” Onazi, who has just signed a one-year deal, told BBC Sport Africa.

Pulev confirms Joshua bout set for December 12 in London (Guardian)

Kubrat Pulev confirmed on Monday that he will face the world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in a title bout on December 12.

Britain’s Joshua was originally scheduled to fight Pulev on June 20, with a second date in July also mooted amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s official: Pulev vs. Joshua on December 12 in London,” Pulev posted on his official webpage on Monday, adding that the date and place were final and the contract had been signed. Read more

West Ham agree deal for Algerian wing wizard (Vanguard)

West Ham have agreed a £30m fee with Brentford for Algerian winger Said Benrahma.

The 25-year-old lit up the Championship last season, registering 17 goals and nine assists for Thomas Frank’s side. Ever since the Bees lost to Fulham in the 2020 playoff final, speculation has been rife over his future, with several Premier League clubs linked.

Arsenal, Aston Villa and Leeds United were all thought to be interested in the summer but West Ham have recently emerged as favourites to land him. On Friday, 90min reported that the Hammers had submitted a £17m bid for Benrahma, not including add-ons.

And it now seems that a £30m deal has been agreed. According to The Athletic, that fee includes all add-ons, with personal terms still needing to be negotiated. Read more
