“Squid Game” creator is working on a ‘more violent’ movie called Killing Old People Club because of course (EW)

No one can accuse Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk of being cryptic about his next project.

Following the international success of his Korean TV series, which is most definitely coming back for at least one more season, the director says he’s now working on a movie with a pretty clear-cut title: Killing Old People Club.

Dong-hyuk was a keynote speaker for MipTV at an international Cannes Series Writer’s Club discussion on Monday with his Squid Game producer Jun Young Jang. As first reported by Variety, at the event Dong-hyuk revealed that he’s written a 25-page treatment for a movie inspired by a novel by Italian author and medieval historian Umberto Eco. It will be “another controversial film,” Dong-hyuk said. “It will be more violent than Squid Game.”

It may be some time since we see whatever debauchery is in store for us with Killing Old People. Dong-hyuk has been vocal about Netflix’s desire for a second season of Squid Game, which skyrocketed to the top of Netflix’s ratings charts after launch last September. Read more

Iran Court finds film student Azadeh Masihzadeh not guilty in Asghar Farhadi defamation suit (THR)

Azadeh Masihzadeh, the former film student of Asghar Farhadi who has accused the two-time Oscar-winning Iranian director of stealing the idea for his new film A Hero from her original documentary, has been acquitted of defamation charges by an Iranian court. Farhadi had brought the suit against Masihzadeh after she publicly claimed the plot for A Hero was taken directly from her 2018 documentary All Winners, All Losers. In response, Masihzadeh filed a plagiarism suit against Farhadi.

The Iranian court has now dismissed Farhadi’s defamation suit, saying there was “insufficient evidence” to support the director’s claims that Masihzadeh was deliberately trying to damage the director’s reputation with her plagiarism claims. The ruling is final and cannot be overturned on appeal. If Masihzadeh had been found guilty, she potentially faced a prison sentence of up to two years as well as 74 lashes (corporal punishment still being a part of the Iranian penal system).

The court has not yet ruled on Masihzadeh’s plagiarism suit, and it is unclear whether Masihzadeh’s acquittal will impact her case against Farhadi.

The plagiarism case focuses on similarities between the plot of All Winners, All Losers and A Hero. Both the documentary and the feature film are focused on the story of a man on leave from debtors’ prison who stumbles across a purse containing gold coins. But when he tries to return them, things get complicated and the man becomes the focus of a media campaign that he hopes will refurbish his image from ex-con to selfless do-gooder. Masihzadeh researched and developed her film at a 2014 documentary workshop in Iran taught by Farhadi. Read more

Lil Nas X’s ‘Montero’ music video director Tanu Muino on first Grammy nomination, filming in Ukraine (Variety)

There are very few people that can claim to have stamped the collective visual consciousness the way Ukrainian director Tanu Muino has. Her colorful and undeniably memorable iconography is what led her to be nominated alongside Lil Nas X for best music video at the 2022 Grammys for “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).”

Muino’s career has skyrocketed these past few years, despite the cultural, physical and emotional stagnation caused by the pandemic. The Odessa native has produced some of pop culture’s most notable music videos for big names like Lizzo, Cardi B and, most recently, Harry Styles, for his new single “As It Was.”

Muino also recently shot and directed Foals’ “2am” music video in Ukraine earlier this year.

“It’s my favorite to shoot in Ukraine! Because it’s my team,” she says. “It was the beginning of January and things were calm. You could still go outside and it was the normal, usual Ukraine life… Everybody was so happy. Things are different now for sure.” Read more

Why Guild of Sports Editors wants FG, NASS to cleanse NFF (Independent)

The Guild of Sports Editors, the umbrella body of managers of sports in the country’s major media organisations, has advised members of the executive committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to resign from their positions honourably and give the game chance to breathe.

Speaking on the backdrop of the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, the editors stated that the board members would be doing the nation great injustice if they continued to misdirect Nigerian football after last Tuesday’s misadventure.

In a statement signed by the Guild’s Vice President, Adekunle Salami, the editors described the decision to sack members of the Super Eagles’ technical crew as diversionary, adding that Nigerian football needed a clean break from the malaise of the last eight years.

“Nigerian football is bigger than any individual and should not be tied to the fortunes of anybody.

“The leadership of the current NFF has ridden on the back of Nigerian football to get to top positions in the world football governing body, FIFA, to the detriment of the game. Read more

McLaren concedes rivals have done ‘a better job’

Bayern Munich explain substitution mix-up saw them briefly play with 12 men (ESPN)

A mix-up involving Bayern Munich substitutes that saw the champions play with 12 men for a few seconds late in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Freiburg was down to a wrong number displayed on the board, Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann said.

The incident came in the 86th minute when Corentin Tolisso and Kingsley Coman were to be taken off for Marcel Sabitzer and Niklas Sule.

But the fourth official displayed a wrong number for Coman and the France winger played on for a few seconds, according to the champions and referee Christian Dingert.

“The fourth official showed the wrong number,” Nagelsmann told a news conference. “King [Coman] did not know he had to come off. It was eight or nine seconds. I think that we played like that. It was not a game-deciding incident but still a bit weird. Read more
