A driver has been confirmed killed during a clash between tanker drivers and some hoodlums at Mile 2 area of Lagos.

The police were investigating the killing, but multiple sources said at least four persons were feared killed and many others injured in the clash on Tuesday.

It was learnt that the clash was not unconnected with the multiple extortion points along the access roads to the Tin-Can Island Port where the hoodlums usually stand to collect money. Read more

LAWMA warns residents against illegal waste collectors (Punch)

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority has warned against the patronage of illegal waste collectors in the state.

The agency’s Director of Public Affairs, Folashade Kadiri, in an interview with PUNCH Metro on Sunday, warned against cart pushers, stating that they are not authorised waste collectors in Lagos State.

Kadiri was reacting to a report that residents of the Mushin area of the state expressed concern over the conversion of the Idi Araba canal to an illegal dump site. Read more

Strike: Union disrupt economic activities at Lagos ports (Guardian)

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) on Tuesday disrupted economic activities at the Apapa and Tin-Can Island Ports.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ports were shut down in line with the two-day warning strike by the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The action was as a result of the escalating hardships and suffering among citizens across the country, occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government. Read more

Shaibu withdraws suit against ‘‘senior brother’’ Obaseki (Nation)

Edo Deputy Governor Comrade Philip Shaibu has withdrawn the anti-impeachment suit filed at the High Court Abuja with reference number: FHC/ABJ/CS/1027/2023 against Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Shaibu, a former member of the House of Representatives, on Tuesday, in a statement he personally signed, also described Obaseki as his boss and senior brother.

Defendants in the suit were the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Department of State Services (DSS), Edo Governor and the Chief Judge of Edo State. Read more

Sanwo-Olu takes over medical care of 13-year-old boy with missing intestine (Guardian)

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has taken over the medical care of Adebola Abiodun, a 13-year-old boy, whose small part of his intestines was allegedly missing at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

In a statement, Sanwo-Olu made the promise on Sunday when he paid an unscheduled visit to Adebola and his mother, Mrs. Deborah Akin-Bright at the Pediatric Ward of LASUTH.

The Governor pledged to take over his medical care by pulling all medical expertise from LASUTH and other resources to save the boy’s life. Read more

Murder of policeman: 6 fleeing suspects arrested (Vanguard)

Six fleeing suspected members of a robbery gang, who shot a policeman dead and made away with his service rifle have been arrested in the Alagbado area of Lagos, three weeks after the incident.

Vanguard gathered that the deceased lone policeman was escorting a civilian, when the robbers accosted him around Airport Hotel, shot him dead and made away with his rifle.

Preliminary investigation, according to the Lagos State Police Command, revealed that three weeks before the murder of the policeman, the suspects operated in a popular club in the Ikeja area of Lagos, where they dispossessed everyone in the club of cash and other valuables. Read more

FG yet to receive formal request on immortalising Akinkunmi — Information Minister (Tribune)

On Monday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the federal government was yet to receive a formal request for the immortalisation of the late designer of the Nigerian national flag, Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, from the Akinkunmi family.

He, however, said the federal government was keen to look into the request put before it by the Akinkunmi family regarding the immortalisation of the late icon.

The minister stated this after paying a courtesy call to the Oyo State governor at the governor’s office, en route to paying a condolence visit to the Akinkunmi family in Ibadan on Monday. Read more

Human rights lawyer Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has called for immediate release of the suspended Chairman of Ijebu-East Local Government Area, Hon. Wale Adedayo, from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The DSS detained Adedayo for accusing the Ogun State Governor, Mr. Dapo Abiodun, of diverting statutory federal allocations due to the state’s local governments in the past two years.

But Falana, in a statement issued yesterday, urged the DSS to advise Abiodun to sue the suspended local government chairman if aggrieved. Read more

You can’t always get what you want — but sometimes, you can. The Rolling Stones announced on Monday that the band is going to release their first album of new music in nearly 20 years this week as they welcome a “new era.” 

The band has released several albums in recent years of live and remastered versions of older material, but the new one, named “Hackney Diamonds,” will be the first album of new music since the band’s 2005 album “A Bigger Bang,” according to the Associated Press.

Few details about the new music have been released, but the band said on Instagram that they would reveal more information about it in a live YouTube broadcast with “The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. ET. Read more

Jimmy Buffett’s cause of death has been revealed.

The legendary singer had been “fighting Merkel Cell Skin Cancer for four years,” according to an official obituary for the star posted to his website. Merkel cell carcinoma is a very rare disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the skin, according to the National Cancer Institute. The site states that “sun exposure and having a weak immune system can affect the risk of Merkel cell carcinoma.”

The obituary noted that Buffett “continued to perform during treatment, playing his last show, a surprise appearance in Rhode Island, in early July.” Read more 

North Korean leader Kim expected to meet Russia’s Putin: US (AlJazeera)

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is expected to hold a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a White House official.

On Monday, United States National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson indicated that the meeting would be part of ongoing discussions over weapons sales between the two countries.

“As we have warned publicly, arms negotiations between Russia and the DPRK are actively advancing,” Watson said, using an acronym for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, or North Korea. Read more

‘‘Maestro’’ makeup designer addresses prosthetic nose backlash in Venice (THR)

The makeup artist for Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro responded Saturday at the Venice Film Festival to the recent backlash over the film’s prosthetic nose.

Cooper was absent in Venice because he’s chosen to support the SAG-AFTRA strike by not walking the red carpet for his film, which he wrote, directs and stars in.

But a large contingent of crew members — as well as Leonard Berstein’s daughter, Jamie Bernstein — were on hand at the festival to discuss Maestro and its creation. It didn’t take long at the press conference before makeup artist Kazu Hiro was asked about the backlash that has engulfed the film on social media in recent weeks. The Maestro team came under criticism in some quarters for Cooper’s decision to wear a prosthetic nose for his portrayal of the iconic Jewish composer, which some claimed was unnecessarily partaking in anti-Semitic stereotypes. The Nobel Foundation said Saturday it was reversing its decision to invite ambassadors from Russia and Belarus to this year’s Nobel award ceremony in Stockholm, after the move sparked a backlash.

In 2022, the Nobel Foundation, which organises the annual Nobel prize ceremony and banquet in Stockholm, decided not to invite the Russian and Belarusian ambassadors to the Stockholm award event because of the war in Ukraine.

The Nigeria Football Federation and Jose Santos Peseiro have reached an agreement for the Portuguese to continue in his role as Head Coach of the Senior Men National Team of Nigeria, Super Eagles.

After weeks of negotiations, the coach has agreed to take a pay cut on his earlier terms, with the new agreement also putting him in charge of the Super Eagles B – the home-based professionals who contest the biennial African Nations Championship.

President of the Nigeria Referees Association Sanni Zubair has hinted that plans are ongoing to deploy video assistant referees in the Nigeria Professional Football League from the incoming 2023/24 season, The PUNCH reports.
