Gunmen numbering over 100, invaded a riverine community in Egan Oriomi Otto Awori Local Council Development Area of Ojo, at the early hours of today, setting several houses on fire.

A 15-month-old baby, who was sleeping, was burnt beyond recognition. 

Also, no fewer than 15 houses were burnt, with property worth millions destroyed. Read more

Nigerian singer and producer, Augustine Miles Kelechi, popularly known as Tekno, has refuted a viral report claiming that he received almost a billion naira from Oluwatobiloba Daniel Anidugbe, popularly known as Kizz Daniel, for his collaboration on the 2021 hit song “Buga”.

The viral post had claimed that the singer, in an interview, disclosed how he got paid millions on “Buga ” collaboration despite not signing a legal agreement with the “Twe Twe” crooner, Kizz Daniel.

Our manufacturing, business sectors will become comatose –NUEE warns over tariff’s hike (Sun)

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) at the weekend raised the alarm that the recent hike in the electricity tariff will lead to more closure of businesses and manufacturing sectors in the country.

Calling for withdrawal in a letter to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, NUEE warned that the hike in the electricity tariff is grossly detrimental to the economic diversification, growth, and well-being of Nigerians.

In the letter signed by the Acting General Secretary of the union, Dominic Igwebike, the union noted that the “recent hike in electricity tariff from N68 /kwh to N225 /kwh is absurd in a country where the majority of the masses are grappling with basic survival and an electricity access rate of about 55%.” Read more

UN-supported NGO plans 400,000 housing units in Nigeria (Leadership)

A United Nations support NGO, Global Centre For Empowerment And Care For Life Challenges (GECLC), said it has concluded a plan to build 400,000 housing units across the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The move according to the Centre is part of efforts towards meeting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) goals number 9 and 11, which are; innovation and infrastructure, and sustainable cities and communities respectively in Nigeria by 2030.

Speaking at the project’s public launch press conference in Kaduna on Saturday, Chairman and Chief Executive of the Centre, Amb. Vincent Ejikeme Agbo said, under the project, 10,000 housing units would be built in each of the 36 states and FCT in two phases. Read more

The New Nigeria Peoples Party has urged the government to implement measures to protect Nigerian schools from kidnappers and intensify efforts to rescue the remaining Chibok girls.

On Sunday, April 14, 2024, it marked a decade since 276 girls from the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, a community in Borno State, were abducted by the Boko Haram terrorist group. Despite some rescues by security agencies, 89 out of the 276 girls remain unaccounted for.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has not cleared anyone involved in the ongoing probe of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, which led to the suspension of Betta Edu, the minister.

Army detains soldier for alleged killing of girlfriend in Enugu (Nation)

The Nigerian Army has announced the detention of one of its soldiers serving in the 82 Division, Enugu, Private Adamu Muhammad, for allegedly killing his lover, Miss Hauwakulu Tabra inside the Airborne and Amphibious part of the division.

The incident, which was said to have happened on Thursday, was reportedly discovered on Friday by the daughter of an army lieutenant around the division’s officers quarters.

It was rumoured that the alleged killer soldier was a repented Boko Haram member, who after his repentance joined the Civilian Joint Task Force and was later enlisted into the Nigerian Army in the year 2021. Read more

3 dead, others injured as soldiers, tricyclists clash in Yobe (Channels)

Three persons have been killed while an unspecified others were injured after a Nigerian Army patrol vehicle hit a Keke Napep rider, causing injuries on the driver and his passengers.

An eyewitness, Adamu Hassan, told Channels Television, that the incident happened on Sunday afternoon at the popular Garin Alkali market via Gashua, the headquarters of the Bade Local Government Area of the state.

At least 33 killed in Afghanistan as heavy rains set off flash floods (AlJazeera)

At least 33 people have been killed over three days of heavy rains and flash flooding in Afghanistan, according to the government’s disaster management department.

“From Friday onwards, because of the rains there were flash floods which caused high human and financial losses,” department spokesman Janan Sayeq said on Sunday.

Chicago mass shooting leaves 8-year-old girl dead, 10 others injured (NBC)

Chicago police believe gang-related violence led to the fatal shooting of an 8-year-old girl that also left 10 others injured Saturday night in the city’s South Side.

According to police, the shooting took place near 52nd St. and South Damen Ave. at approximately 9:18 p.m. An 8-year-old girl was killed from a gunshot wound to the head, while two boys — a 1- and 7-year-old, were critically injured after being shot multiple times.

Chicago Police Department Deputy Chief Don Jerome said police aided in response efforts for the other eight victims, ranging in age from 19 to 40, by applying tourniquets and chest seals. Read more

DR Congo: Infectious disease experts coordinate efforts against Monkeypox (AfricaNews)

In a concerted response to the growing threat of the Monkey Pox virus, also known as simian pox, Africa is mobilising to strengthen its response. On April 13, nearly 250 experts gathered in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) under the aegis of the World Health Organization (WHO) and Africa (CDC), to develop strategies to stem the spread of this disease in the African region.

The situation is alarming, with over 92,000 human cases reported in more than 110 countries. In 2023, the DRC was one of the hardest-hit countries, recording 14,600 cases and 654 deaths. 

For Professor Jean-Jacques Muyembe, renowned virologist and co-discoverer of the Ebola virus, the urgency of the situation is clear: “Very recently in the DRC, for the first time we observed sexual transmissions of MPOX, and so if we take this sexual, heterosexual transmission, we take the severity, we take the spread of the disease, almost every province is affected. It’s a public health emergency.” Read more

NFF to deliberate on Super Eagles coach (Leadership)

The Enugu State FA on Saturday confirmed NNL side Coal City United FC champions of the state’s Federation Cup, after Enugu Rangers allegedly refused to play penalties after the final game ended 1-1 in 90 minutes.

The match, which was held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu was scheduled to go into penalties by officials of the competition but Rangers were said to have rejected the option after regulation time.
