10 rescued as two-storey building collapses in Lagos Island (Channels)
Ten people have been rescued after a two-storey building collapsed in the Isale Eko area of Lagos State on Thursday.
The structure, alleged to have been defective, gave way following a fire in parts of Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island.
The Lagos Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, who confirmed the incident, said 14 other buildings were seriously impacted by the fire.
But while providing an update about the incident, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the rescued persons are receiving treatment. Read more
US lab denies conducting poison test on Mohbad (Punch)
The management of the National Medical Services Laboratories in Pennsylvania, United States of America, has refuted the claim by the Lagos State Government that a toxicology test to ascertain the cause of the death of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, aka Mohbad, was conducted at its facility.
The claim by the NMS Labs was in response to inquiries made by our correspondent, who embarked on a fact-finding mission to ascertain the musician’s cause of death.
Before embarking on the fact-finding mission, some concerned members of the public reportedly protested against the claim made by a pathologist, who appeared before the Coroner’s Court on Wednesday, May 15, and said an autopsy could not ascertain Mohbad’s cause of death because his corpse had decomposed. LGs autonomy: Supreme Court orders governors to file defence in 7 days (Nation)
The Supreme Court has ordered the 36 state governors to file their defence within seven days to the suit filed against them by the federal government over the management of funds belonging to the various local governments.
A seven-member panel of the court, led by Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba also ordered the Fed Govt to, within two days of being served with the defendants’ responses, to file its reply.
The court issued the orders on Thursday in a ruling on an application by the Fed Govt for abridgement of time for parties to file all relevant papers in relation to the suit. Read more

Nigerian Gov’t denounces Israel over attacks on Gaza civilians (Leadership)
The Nigerian government has strongly condemned the killing of at least 45 defenceless civilians at camps in Rafah, and other parts of Gaza amid the raging war between Israel and Hamas.
A statement signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar on Thursday said, “The Government of Nigeria noted that the recent deadly attacks on the Rafah Displacement Camps in Southern Gaza on Sunday, the 26th, which killed about 45 people, mostly women and children, represent an unfortunate addition to the list of strikes on soft civilian targets with devastating effects that have now characterised the crisis.”
The Nigerian authority urged all stakeholders, including the warring parties (Israel and Palestine), the United Nations, especially its Security Council, the European Union, human rights groups, civil society organisations, world leaders and the international community to intensify efforts towards a speedy resolution of the conflict and the immediate ceasefire to avert more disaster. Court restrains Amaewhule, 24 pro-Wike legislators from parading as Rivers lawmakers (Tribune)
A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital on Thursday, granted an interlocutory injunction, restraining factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule and 24 members of the house from parading themselves as members of the assembly.
The court which was presided over by Justice Charles Wali also restrained the assembly members from meeting or sitting at the Auditorium of the House of Assembly Quarters located at Off Aba Road, Port Harcourt “or at any other place whatsoever to purport to carry out the legislative business of the Rivers State House of Assembly”, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit. Filling stations, banks, restaurants, and major supermarkets shut down as a result of the sit-at-home order issued by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Representatives from both Warri and Uvwie kingdoms of Delta State, Wednesday, visited the Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo State to demand justice for a student, Alex Timileyin allegedly beaten to death by his colleagues.

Partial results in South Africa’s national election put the long-ruling African National Congress at below 50% of the vote as counting continued Thursday, raising the possibility that it might lose its majority for the first time since it swept to power under Nelson Mandela at the end of apartheid in 1994.
With around 20% of votes counted and declared, it was only a partial picture after Wednesday’s election. A jury has found Chad Daybell guilty in the murders of his first wife and his second wife’s two children in what prosecutors in Idaho said was a plot to pursue “money, power and sex.”
The verdict in the capital murder trial followed seven weeks of testimony and comes more than a year after Daybell’s second wife, Lori Vallow, was also convicted of murdering her two youngest children — Joshua “J.J.” Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 16 — in a so-called doomsday plot.

Joe Biden’s support among Arab American voters in critical swing states has plummeted during the war in Gaza, a new poll found, in the latest sign that the United States president’s backing of Israel could hurt him in November’s election.
The Arab American Institute (AAI) poll released on Thursday showed Biden’s support among Arab Americans hovering at just under 20 percent.
Biden won nearly 60 percent of the Arab American vote in the 2020 US presidential election, which saw him defeat his Republican predecessor and 2024 challenger Donald Trump to win the White House. Read more
Israeli forces capture “arms smuggling” corridor along Gaza-Egypt border (UPI)
The Israeli military said its forces have gained control of Gaza’s so-called Philadelphi Corridor, a buffer zone that runs along the eight-mile border between southern Gaza and Egypt that it says served as a Hamas “lifeline.”
The operation by the Israel Defence Forces’ 162nd armored division as part of its ongoing offensive in Rafah captured 20 tunnels used by Hamas to smuggle weapons into Gaza and dozens of launch pits with loaded rocket launchers used to bombard Israeli territory, IDF Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said at a Wednesday night news briefing.
“Hamas exploited the Philadelphi Corridor, using it to build this infrastructure just dozens of meters from the border with Egypt so that we would not strike them. This infrastructure was located between 10 and 40 meters from the border, specifically so that Israel would not strike near the fence with Egypt. Read more

George Russell has revealed that Mercedes suggested that a “coin toss” decide which driver would receive the updated front wing that was introduced by the team ahead of last weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix.

Four teams are still fighting to determine the matchup for the 2024 Stanley Cup Final, but the NHL revealed the full schedule for the title series Thursday, with Game 1 set for June 8.
Stanley Cup Final coverage will air on ABC and stream on ESPN+. Puck drops throughout the best-of-seven-game series are 8 p.m.

Pique under investigation in Spain corruption case (BBC)
Former Barcelona and Manchester United defender Gerard Pique has been placed under official investigation by a court in Spain over his alleged involvement in a deal which saw the Spanish Super Cup moved to Saudi Arabia.
Pique’s company Kosmos signed agreements with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) which would see it receive 40m euros (£34m) for brokering the deal, with the RFEF receiving 400m euros (£340m).
Judge Delia Rodrigo said there were “possible illegalities with criminal implications” in the agreements. Read more
French Open bans alcohol from the stands following rowdy behaviour by fans (NBC)
Organizers with the French Open, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments in professional tennis, banned alcohol sales for fans following a week of rowdy behavior in the stands.
“Alcohol was until now authorized in the stands. Now it’s over,” said Tournament Director Amelie Mauresmo. “The umpires are really going to be even more strict to further respect to the players and respect the game,” according to to CNBC.
