14 injured as two BRT vehicles collide in Lagos

Fourteen persons were injured in a crash that happened around 10am on the Bus Rapid Transport corridor at the Cement Bus Stop, Valley Estate, inward Ile Zik on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The accident on Tuesday involved two BRT buses that collided leaving the two vehicles badly damaged.

Eyewitnesses who spoke with PUNCH Metro said the accident led to a traffic jam on the road as the trans-loading of passengers later commenced.

“It was a serious accident. The two buses collided and many of the passengers on board were injured. I wondered what could have led to the collision of such large vehicles,” an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity said.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority in a post on X via @followlastma said men of the Lagos State Police Command later arrived at the scene to join in the rescue efforts.

A video of the crash obtained by our correspondent showed the vehicles with the windscreen of one of them completely damaged as smoke oozed out from it.

Passersby were seen clustering around the scene of the crash as people made efforts to attend to the injured passengers.

Speaking in an interview with PUNCH Metro, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Babatunde Farinloye, who said the accident was caused by speeding on the part of the drivers, disclosed that 45 persons were on the vehicles.

“Forty-five persons were involved and 14 persons were injured, nobody was killed. The accident was caused by speeding. The victims have been taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital,” the FRSC commander said.

He urged motorists to avoid excessive speeding to prevent such kinds of crashes on the roads.

According to Farinloye, the vehicles were later towed by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency. (Punch)
