In a bid to maintain law and order in the state, operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps have arrested 14 miscreants who have been terrorising passersby and passengers at Terminal 3 in the Oshodi area of Lagos State.

The suspects, known for their notorious activities, were taken into custody by authorities and have been profiled.

The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a video shared on X.com on Thursday. Read more

 

Lagos distributes 20,000 food boxes to residents (NewTelegraph)

The Lagos State Government said it has begun the distribution of 20,000 bags of food items to religious bodies in the state. It stated further that the motive is to cushion the effects of hardship among the residents in the state.

The distribution began at the Lagos State Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja yesterday, Mr Abdullahi Jebe, the Special Adviser to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Religion (Islamic), said.

He said that the governor had been getting palliatives across to various sections of the society in the state. “Associations such as the Community Development Associations (CDAs), Community Development Committees (CDCs) have benefitted from the distribution of the palliative.” Read more 

Resident Doctors protest colleague’s continued hold by bandits in Kaduna (Leadership)

The Kaduna State chapter of Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), on Thursday, staged a peaceful protest to demand the unconditional release of their colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola who was abducted on December 27th, 2023 at her residence in Kaduna.

Dr. Popoola was kidnapped alongside her husband and nephew, but her husband was released after spending weeks in captivity, leaving his breastfeeding wife in captivity for over eight months.

Addressing journalists at the end of the peaceful protest which took place within the premises of the National Eye Centre Kaduna, President of ARD in Kaduna State, Dr. Muhammad Okpanaki said, if their request for prompt intervention and release of their colleague was not adhered to, the resident doctors may have no option but to down tools to press home their demands. NJC recommends Kekere-Ekun as CJN, 28 others as judges (Nation)

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has nominated Justice Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-Ekun to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointment as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

The recommendation was made at its 106th meeting presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola held on August 14 and 15.

Russia sentences US citizen Ksenia Karelina to 12 years for Ukraine donation (National)

A Russian court has sentenced Ksenia Karelina, a dual Russian-US citizen, to 12 years in prison for treason over a donation she made to a charity that helps Ukraine.

The Sverdlovsk Regional Court announced the sentence on Thursday after prosecutors had asked the judge to jail Ms Karelina, 33, for 15 years. The Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, accused her in February of collecting funds for the Ukrainian army, Russia’s state-run Tass news service reported.

A resident of Los Angeles, Ms Karelina was detained during a family visit to the city of Yekaterinburg. She pleaded guilty on August 7 and hopes to be released in a future prisoner exchange with the US, her lawyer Mikhail Mushailov said, according to Tass. Read more
