157 Lagos prison inmates set to write WASSCE, 2 pursue PhD (Sunnews)

The Lagos Prisons Command says education behind bars is getting more interesting with two of its inmates already pursuing their PhDs at the Kirikiri Maximum Prison.
The Controller of Prisons, Lagos Command, Tunde Ladipo disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Monday in Lagos. According to him, there is a renewed interest in education among the inmates across the various prisons in the state. He said that the progress and courage exhibited by the two PhD inmates at the maximum prison had sparked off a new zeal for academic pursuit among other inmates. Ikeja residents groan over power outage, union suspends picketing (Guardian)

Residents of Ikeja area of Lagos State have urged the unions in the electricity sector to intervene in the incessant power failure that is afflicting the area.The union of electricity workers under the auspices of Nigeria Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) had on Wednesday last week picketed and shutdown the headquarters of Ikeja Electric (IE) over allegation of deliberately hoarding prepaid meters meant for distribution to customers amid deteriorating power supply. Led by its Secretary General, Joe Ajaero, the union accused IE of engaging in anti-labour activities, including its continued sacking of workers. Ajaero said the maltreatment of workers by the electricity firm has lingered for over two years without consideration for conducive working conditions. Read more

 

LRMT: Marina-Mile 2 section commences operation in 2022, LAMATA assures (Vanguard)

Following a comprehensive review of the Lagos rail project which ought to have commenced passenger operation but was hindered by unforeseen third party issues and other challenges, the Lagos State Government has said that the Lagos Rail Mass Transit, LRMT, Blue Line Rail project from Marina to Mile 2 section would be ready for passenger operation by 2022. Managing Director of Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, Mr. Abiodun Dabiri, who revealed this during signing of an agreement on behalf of Lagos State Government with a foreign firm, Alstom SA of France at the weekend, added that the move was part of efforts to bring the mass transit project to passenger operation in 2022. “It will bring a new lease of life to the project”. ASUU wants immediate review of LAUTECH tuition fees (NTA)

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called for the immediate downward review of high tuition fees being paid at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho, Oyo State. Theophilus Lagi, the ASUU Abuja Zone Coordinator, made the call while addressing newsmen in Gwagwalada, Abuja on Monday. LAUTECH is co-owned by both Oyo and Osun State Governments. Lagi said that the institution had, in recent times, been tied with crisis over default to pay subvention and 10 months outstanding promotion areas to ASUU members. Read more

Why I visited Obasanjo – Saraki (Vanguard)

Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, Monday held a closed doors meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his pent house in Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta. Saraki who came in a black jeep land cruiser with pocket of security cladded arrived the OOPL around 5:30pm emerged from the meeting at 7:12pm. Vanguard gathered that the meeting was scheduled for 4:pm but did not start until 5 :30 pm immediately after Saraki arrived the venue. Addressing newsmen after the meeting, Saraki said he was with Obasanjo to make up for the formal opening during the inauguration of the Presidential library held last year. Read more

 

Lagos flags off HOS Cup (PM News)

The Lagos State Government on Monday flagged off the 2018 edition of the Head of Service, HOS Cup football tournament. The event was flagged off by the HOS, Folasade Adesoye at the Lagos State Rehabilitation Centre, Isheri where staff of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, slugged it out with staff of Bariga Local Council Development Area, LCDA. Ambode advocates improved welfare for NYSC members in Lagos State (Vanguard)

Gov. Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State has urged employers of the NYSC members to improve on their welfare and create conducive environment for them during the service. Ambode made the call on Monday in Lagos, during the official closing ceremony of the orientation course for the 2018 batch “B” of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). : Lagos State Governor, represented by Mr Oluseye Oladejo, the state Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, advised the corps members to be law abiding at all times. Accident: 19 corpers injured on Lagos-Ibadan expressway (Vanguard)

No fewer than 19 corps members were injured on Monday in a lone accident involving a Nissan Civilian bus at Danco area of Sagamu along Lagos – Ibadan expressway. Newsmen report that the injured corps members were travelling to their places of primary assignment in Ota after the three week orientation exercise which ended on Monday in NYSC Camp, Sagamu.
