There have been 188 new cases of Covid-19 reported in Nigeria in the past 24 hours.

In an announcement via its Twitter handle, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said there are now 56,017 confirmed cases in the most populous country in Africa, with 43,998 the previously reported cases now recovered and discharged.

Nigeria’s death toll from the coronavirus has now risen to 1,076, after one more death was reported in the past day.

The NCDC made the announcement Friday night.

Africa has recorded more than 1.3 million cases and over 30,000 deaths.

As of September 10, the confirmed coronavirus death toll on the continent stood at 32,117. There are 1,330,038 confirmed infections and 1,068,493 recoveries, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Worldwide, the number of those diagnosed with Covid-19 has exceeded 28 million. According to a count by Johns Hopkins University, more than 28.3 million people around the world have been diagnosed with the coronavirus and more than 912,000 have died, while some 19 million people have recovered.

Meanwhile, the United Nations General Assembly has reportedly overwhelmingly approved a resolution on tackling Covid-19, calling for “intensified international cooperation and solidarity to contain, mitigate and overcome the pandemic”.

The resolution, adopted by a vote of 169-2, also urged member states “to enable all countries to have unhindered timely access to quality, safe, efficacious and affordable diagnosis, therapeutics, medicines and vaccines”.
