Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested two suspects for the alleged killing of one Osita Anwuanwu, 64, in the Arida area of Ikotun.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Sunday that the daughter of the deceased said he had an argument with the suspects and slumped in the process, adding that the suspects had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba, for further investigation.

He said, “Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have again arrested two suspects for the alleged killing of one Osita Anwuanwu, 64, in the Ikotun area of Lagos State on April 8, 2021, around 8.45 pm. Read more

Police checkpoints remain despite purported dismantling by CP (Guardian)

Despite the order by Lagos State police boss, Hakeem Odumosu, dismantling checkpoints on Badagri-Seme corridor, investigations at the weekend showed that roadblocks on that axis still remained unabated.

A resident of the area, who confided in The Guardian, noted that the directive was taken with a pinch of salt as roadblocks had since returned in the last 24 hours.

A check yesterday revealed that between Badagry Round-About to Seme, over 15 checkpoints were mounted by policemen.

“Between Okomaiko to Agbara, policemen flood the road with checkpoints from 6.30pm. It is usually done at nightfall. The commissioner of police just made a pronouncement without following it up with strict monitoring,” the source said. Read more

Mother of 3 slumps as POWA demolishes shops (Punch)

A mother of three, identified simply as Mama Esther, has been hospitalised after she slumped when her shop was demolished by officials of the Police Officers’ Wives Association.

It was gathered that POWA had given the tenants in its market at Pedro in the Somolu area of Lagos State a two-week notice to vacate the premises for demolition.

Our correspondent learnt that the demolition was to pave way for the construction of an ultra-modern market at the site by a developer.

However, at the expiration of the two-week notice on Thursday, April 8, 2021, shops in the market were demolished. Read more

JAMB begins registration for 2021 UTME, DE (Guardian)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially begun registration of candidates for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE) into tertiary institutions.

The announcement came barely 48 hours after it had suspended the exercise over technical challenges of the National Identification Number (NIN).

JAMB spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, in a statement yesterday, confirmed that registration had commenced in full swing. Read more

55-Year-Old Woman Beheaded In Osun (DailyTrust)

A 55-year-old woman identified as Iya Elekuru was killed in Ile-Ife yesterday by suspected ritualists who cut off her head and hands.

It was gathered that the woman from Modakeke town was lured to a house and killed by unidentified persons while hawking food at Ogbingin area, Ile-Ife.

Her head and hands were taken away by the suspects. Some angry youths burnt the building where the corpse of the woman was found.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Olawale Olokode, confirmed the incident to Daily Trust. Read more

2 bullets extracted from body of Ekiti monarch shot by masked gunmen (Punch)

A commissioner in Ekiti State House of Assembly Commission and an indigene of Ewu Ekiti in the Ilejemeje Local Government Area of the state, Segun Erinle, said on Sunday that the tension in the community following the shooting by bandits on Friday of the monarch, Oba Adetutu Ajayi, had gone down.

Erinle, who was at the monarch’s bedside, said the return of calm to the community followed information that Oba Ajayi was recovering in the hospital, where he was rushed to for medical attention.

Masked gunmen had on Friday attacked the monarch along the Ayetoro Ekiti-Ewu Road by firing at his vehicle and in the process injured the traditional ruler. Read more

Boko Haram: 6 killed, UN hub, others destroyed in Borno (DailyTrust)

Six people were killed and many soldiers wounded when Boko Haram terrorists loyal to Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) attacked Damasak in Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State at night on Saturday.

It was learnt that three women, a man and two soldiers lost their lives during the attack but other sources gave higher figures.

The United Nations has condemned the attack saying thousands of people would face serious humanitarian challenges.

Woman loses pregnancy to police brutality in Rivers (Guardian)

A woman, Mrs Joy Godstime Ihunwo, who was allegedly brutalised by operatives of the anti-kidnapping unit of Rivers State Police Command, has reportedly lost her two-month pregnancy.

A scanned result conducted by Transview Diagnostic Centre in Igboukwu, D/Line, Port Harcourt, on April 10, 2021, signed by Okeke Chidi, and made available to The Guardian, revealed a miscarriage at eight weeks.

Mrs Ihunwo, while displaying the result to newsmen yesterday in Port Harcourt, urged human rights community and well-meaning Nigerians to help her secure justice. Read more

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, yesterday praised the Itsekiri for following norms, culture and tradition in the selection of Prince Tsola Emiko as the Olu-designate.

Several migrants found dead on boat off Spain’s Canary Islands (AlJazeera)

At least four people were found dead on a migrant boat off the Canary Island of El Hierro on Sunday, the Spanish Red Cross said.

The vessel was spotted by a fishing boat around 193km (120 miles) to the south of El Hierro, one of the smallest of the Canary Islands, according to local media.

A rescue operation was under way on Sunday afternoon, with three helicopters deployed to airlift the injured to safety. Read more

Alibaba accepts record China fine and vows to change (BBC)

Chinese tech giant Alibaba said on Monday that it accepted a record penalty imposed by the country’s anti-monopoly regulator.

Regulators slapped a $2.8b fine after a probe determined that it had abused its market position for years.

The fine amounts to about 4% of the company’s 2019 domestic revenue.

Alibaba Group’s executive vice chairman Joe Tsai indicated that regulators have taken an interest in platforms like Alibaba as they grow in importance. Read more

Qatar Red Crescent to launch global refugee vaccination project (AlJazeera)

$The Qatar Red Crescent has announced it will launch a $100m humanitarian initiative to provide COVID-19 vaccines to refugees, displaced persons and migrants around the world.

The campaign, scheduled to start on Monday, will run for three years and aims to cover 20 countries across Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Following a motto of “Leave no one behind”, the Qatar Red Crescent will implement the initiative in cooperation with the World Health Organization. Read more

Iran calls blackout at Natanz atomic site ‘nuclear terrorism’ (AlJazeera)

 Iran condemned a blackout at its underground Natanz nuclear facility early on Sunday as an act of “nuclear terrorism” and said Tehran reserves the right to respond, but did not specify who was responsible and how Iran may react.

“The act against the Natanz nuclear enrichment centre shows the defeat of the opponents of the country’s industrial and political advancements in preventing the nuclear industry’s significant development,” Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), said on Sunday.

Salehi also directly linked the incident with the nuclear deal, saying it was perpetrated by those who oppose nuclear negotiations to lift US sanctions. Read more

Hideki Matsuyama held off the field to win the Masters by one stroke at Augusta National and become the first Japanese man to claim a major title.

American debutant Will Zalatoris was his closest challenger at nine under.

A Hollywood fantasy turned into reality when Rachael Blackmore became the first female jockey to win Britain’s gruelling Grand National horse race, breaking down one of the biggest gender barriers in sport.

Blackmore, a 31-year-old Irishwoman, rode Minella Times to a landmark victory on Saturday in the 173rd edition of the famous steeplechase at Aintree in Liverpool, northwest England.
