2 children die as 2 storey building collapses in Lagos (Vanguard)

Tragedy struck on Sunday when a two storey building collapsed at Adeleye Street, Ladilak, Bariga area of Lagos State killing at least two yet to be identified children in the process.

The incident it was gathered happened on Sunday evening with three adults sustaining injuries.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident, saying the agency was on top of the situation.

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, “The Agency activated its response to the above incident and upon arrival at the incident scene, discovered that the tank scaffolding of a 2 Storey building collapsed on a bungalow beside it and affected two rooms. Read more

NDLEA intercepts 2.3m tabs of Opioids going to 7 northern states (Independent)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) has intercepted over 2.3million tablets of illicit pharmaceutical opioids and other psychoactive substances meant for distribution in seven Northern states.

The interception followed a series of interdiction operations by operatives of the agency, in the past one week.

The banned drugs were said to be heading to Borno, Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, Gombe and Nasarawa states.

Specifically, NDLEA authority disclosed that a total of two million three hundred and twenty five thousand, five hundred and fifty three (2, 325, 553.00) tablets and capsules of Tramadol, Pregabalin, Hypnox, Diazepam and Exol-5 including 7, 353 bottles of a new psychoactive substance locally called Akuskura meant for the seven states were seized from locations across Kaduna, Kogi, Sokoto, and the FCT. 35-year-old mast vandal arrested in Lagos (Vanguard)

A 35-year-old suspect identified as

Emmanuel Aaron has been arrested by operatives attached to Meiran Division of the Lagos State Police Command for vandalising a telecommunication mast in Isoto area of Meiran.

Vanguard gathered that Aaron was arrested on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at about 3:05 am in response to a distress call by residents in the community.

During his arrest, the police recovered twelve solar batteries  loaded in their operational vehicle, a Ford with registration number FKJ 519 YF.

Immediately police officers arrived at the scene, Aaron’s colleagues and

conspirators (who are still at large) took to their heels, unfortunately, he was arrested. Read more 

“The Oratory” movie raises awareness of plight of street children (Leadership)

A movie titled ‘The ORATORY’ is set to further beam the spotlight on the plight of street children and internally displaced people in Nigeria and other countries.

The globally acclaimed movie produced by the Salesians of Don Bosco and premiered last year and has been screened in Dublin, London, Turin, Venice and other cities. A public screening was held on Saturday at the Genesis Cinemas within Maryland Shopping Mall in Lagos.

In a media brief held midweek in Lagos, it was noted that, screening ‘The Oratory’’ movie was aimed at raising funds for the ‘Child Protection Centres’ being built across the country by the Salesians of Don Bosco named after the Italian catholic priest, John Melchior Bosco known to dedicated his life to the betterment and education of street children, juvenile delinquents, and other disadvantaged youths.

The Eze Ndigbo of Surulere Local Government of Lagos State, Eze Dr. Edwin Obi has declared the support of the Igbo community in the district for all candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections.

Resident Doctors issue fresh 2 weeks ultimatum to FG, states (DailyTrust) 

The Nigerian Association of Medical Doctors (NARD) on Sunday extended the two-week ultimatum earlier issued over the plight of members in state and federal government establishments across the country.

At the end of its national executive council meeting held in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, the body said the action becomes necessary to give the federal and state governments more time to resolve the matter.

NARD had earlier issued a two weeks ultimatum in July at the end of its NEC meeting held in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

While reading the communique on their new position, NARD President, Dr Dare Godiya Ishaya flanked by other members of the executive, bemoaned the slow pace encountered in the payment of the 2020 Medical Residency Training Funds (MRTF) for its members who were hitherto omitted. Read more

Ex-Minister, Adeosun’s charity gets FIRS’ tax deductible certificate (Sun)

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), has issued a tax deductible donations certificate to DashMe, a Lagos-based Charity with operations in Nigeria, the United States and the United Kingdom, founded by former finance minister, Mrs Kemi Adeosun last year.

Tax deductible lowers a firm’s taxable income and reduces the tax liability. 

The certificate was issued to the Foundation at the weekend in Abuja.

The FIRS issues tax-deductible donation certificates to carefully vetted registered charities whose operations meet Nigeria’s statutory ‘public character’ requirements. Section 25(c) of the Companies Income Tax Act (CITA) permits companies which make charitable donations to charities with tax-deductible donations certificates to a ‘donation relief’. Read more

Bandit kingpin Bello Turji has embraced peace in Zamfara – Deputy Governor (Channels)

A notorious bandit kingpin Bello Turji has embraced the peace initiative of the Zamfara State Government as part of efforts to end banditry in the north-western state.

Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Senator Hassan Nasiha, disclosed this during a conference on security in Gusau, the State capital organized by the Students Union Of Medina University.

Nasiha commended Turji for deciding to shun banditry, saying his action is bringing about relative peace in the three local government areas which were hitherto the frontline of banditry in Zamfara State.

Stanley Kubrick collaborator and actor Leon Vitali dies aged 74 (Sky)

Leon Vitali, a long-time collaborator with film director Stanley Kubrick, has died aged 74.

The official Twitter channel for Kubrick said in a tweet: “It is with the greatest of sadness that we have to tell you that the mainstay of a vast number of Kubrick’s films, Leon Vitali, passed away peacefully last night. Our thoughts are with his family and all that new and loved him.”

Vitali started his acting career in the early 1970s, with small roles in a number of TV hits, such as Z Cars, Van der Valk and Dixon of Dock Green.

After appearing in Please Sir! he went on to have a regular role in its successor The Fenn Street Gang, as the character Peter Craven. Read more

Before Daenerys Targaryen was the famous “mother of dragons” in “Game of Thrones,” her ancestor, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, was set to become the first ruling Queen of Westeros. 

Milly Alcock, 22, who stars as Rhaenyra in the first five episodes of the “GoT” spinoff series “House of the Dragon,” told The Post that she hadn’t seen “GoT” before landing the role.

Mac Miller’s 2018 overdose death has had rippling effects across not just the rap community but the pop world as well.

Speaking to the Zane Lowe Podcast in a recent interview, singer Demi Lovato got candid about her drug addiction and admitted she felt guilty for surviving her overdose, which happened just a few months before Miller died.

“I had a lot of survivor’s guilt after my overdose because right after that, Mac Miller died, and it just put everything into perspective for me of, ‘That could have been you, that almost was you, and how are you going to live your life now?’” she said. “And it affected me a lot.”

Demi Lovato was hospitalized in July 2018 after being found unresponsive at her Los Angeles home. The overdose came just weeks after she confessed she relapsed after years of sobriety in the song “Sober.” Read more

With war and conflict being so much a part of everyday life, an Israeli company has developed a free real-time and on-demand sign language interpretation app for members of the deaf community to use on smartphones.

With a team of interpreters available and speaking and signing in various sign languages, the video call service is available anywhere, anytime.

During the last round of violence earlier this month between Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza, the company Sign Now conducted its first pilot tests with Gaza residents.

“We don’t get involved in politics. We’re here to lead a social revolution,” said Tomer Levy, Sign Now’s founder and CEO. Read more

President of the Nigerian Football Federation, Pinnick Amaju, has revealed that the federation is still owing their vendors over N600m, Sunday PUNCH reports.

Pinnick made this known in an interview with Brila FM on Saturday.

Open golf champion, Tom Weiskopf dead at 79 (Sun)

Open golf champion Tom Weiskopf has died aged 79 after fighting pancreatic cancer.

The former PGA Tour player was diagnosed with the disease in 2020.

Eight-time major winner Tom Watson announced his friend’s death in a post on social media.
