Steven Spielberg on Producing: “The smartest thing I do is hire women” (THR)
West Side Story director and producer Steven Spielberg was the star of the Producers Guild of America awards nominee breakfast on Saturday morning, as one producer after another praised him, even though they were all competing for the same prize at Saturday night’s award show.
Spielberg didn’t disappoint, and gave up several memorable tidbits, including saying that he won’t direct another musical after West Side Story. Producing is a different matter, as he and his company, Amblin Entertainment, are producing the musical adaptation of The Color Purple.
“The worst day of the West Side Story shoot was the last day, because I knew I wouldn’t direct another musical,” said Spielberg, who is up for the PGA’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award for outstanding producer of theatrical motion pictures alongside his longtime producing partner, Kristie Macosko Krieger.
Spielberg repeatedly praised Krieger, who couldn’t be at the breakfast panel at the Skirball Cultural Center hosted by the PGA and presented by The Hollywood Reporter. For decades, Spielberg’s go-to producers have been female, including Kathleen Kennedy, who now runs Lucasfilm (both Krieger and Kennedy began as his assistants). Read more

Dune director Denis Villeneuve has teased what to expect from the film’s sequel, including a more significant role for Zendaya.
A sequel to the hit 2021 film was officially announced last October after the new film earned over $40million at the US box office in its opening weekend. It will land in October 2023.
In a new interview on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast, director Villeneuve discussed the follow-up to the film, and that Zendaya’s small role in the first Dune would be significantly expanded upon in the sequel.
He said: “For Zendaya, I will say Part One was a promise. I know that we saw a glimpse of her in Part One, but in Part Two, she’ll have a prominent part. We will follow Timothée [Chalamet] and Zendaya on their adventures in the desert. On-set safety is a top concern for ASC awards honorees (THR)
When the American Society of Cinematographers celebrates its 36th annual ASC Awards on March 20 at the ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood, Ellen Kuras — whose cinematography credits include Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Ted Demme’s Blow — will become the first woman recipient of the American Society of Cinematographers’ lifetime achievement award. “[In some ways,] things have changed so much,” says the cinematographer and director, remembering when she was invited to join the society in 1999. “There have been a lot of new opportunities for women working in episodic, working in television and commercials. While things [overall] haven’t changed enough — and really they haven’t — there’s so much more room for us to be able to be much more inclusive and to encourage inclusivity, not only for women but for people of colour.
“We have to make it part of our mind-set and our cultural approach to training people,” she adds.
During the ASC Awards, the society also will honor Peter Levy (The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, Californication, 24), who will accept the career achievement in television award, as well
as cinematographer and outgoing International Cinematographers Guild (IATSE Local 600) president John Lindley, who will collect the president’s award. Panavision’s lens expert Dan Sasaki will receive the ASC’s inaugural Curtis Clark Technical Achievement Award, which recognizes an individual who has made significant technological contributions to cinematography and is named after DP Curtis Clark (The Draughtsman’s Contract), who has long led ASC’s technical initiatives.
As a DP, Kuras is a three-time winner of the award for best dramatic cinematography at Sundance and has earned other accolades for her body of work in features, television and documentaries, which includes projects with Martin Scorsese (The 50 Year Argument), Spike Lee (Summer of Sam) and Rebecca Miller (Personal Velocity). She notes that when she is filming, top priority is always creating the images that give meaning to the story. Read more

Benzino waves white flag in longstanding feud with Eminem (AllHipHop)
After beefing with Eminem for two decades, Benzino put a stop to the bad blood on Thursday (March 17). Coi Leray’s father announced he’s done with the beef via Twitter.
“To all @Eminem fans & Stans all over the world, the beef is officially over,” he wrote. “I’m letting y’all know I have no hate towards any of his fans & recognize his contributions to Hip Hop. He truly is a part of the culture & 1 of the best to rock the mic regardless of his color.”
Coi Leray’s burgeoning career played a role in Benzino’s decision. He admitted arguing with Eminem’s fans wasn’t a good look for both him and his daughter.
“I realize that me going back and forth with his fans is not good for the culture, my spirit, my legacy and most importantly, my beautiful, talented daughter Coi Leray,” he explained. “I don’t want any negativity from me to affect her dream. This is truly over. God Bless All.”

Bernd Leno and Aaron Ramsdale moment spotted by Arsenal fans and speaks volumes (Mirror)
Bernd Leno and Aaron Ramsdale summed up the togetherness in the Arsenal squad by sharing a warm embrace after Saturday afternoon’s hard-fought victory over Aston Villa.
Bukayo Saka scored the winner in the first half as the Gunners beat Villa 1-0 to return to winning ways after Wednesday’s defeat by Liverpool. The result means Arsenal’s push for a top-four finish in the Premier League is firmly on track with a four-point advantage and a game in hand over Manchester United in fifth.
There was a blow for the North Londoners ahead of kick-off as Ramsdale was ruled out with a hip injury. The England international has established himself as first-choice goalkeeper since his arrival last summer and he has been one of his side’s most important players.
In Ramsdale’s absence, Leno was handed his fourth league start of the season and kept a clean sheet, making an important late save to deny Philippe Coutinho’s free-kick. Read more

Max Verstappen said the session was a bit “hit and miss” but said it was a “good start” to the new season. He added: “It was a bit of a hit and miss. Q2 seemed quite good and Q3 was a bit of a struggle to keep the balance together… It was a good day overall, it’s a good start to the new era.
He added: “We have a good race car, which at the end of the day is the most important.
“Here you want to be good in qualifying of course but you also really want to make sure your car is working for the race, because the tyres are really struggling a lot more there and it’s a bit different to some other tracks.”
Verstappen lined up second on the grid after he failed to pip Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc on his final run. It means he will split both Ferrari’s with Carlos Sainz behind, while his Red Bull team mate Sergio Perez lines up fourth. Read more
