2 killed, many injured in Lagos multiple accidents (Nation)

Two persons have been killed and others injured in multiple accidents in Lagos.

The accidents, witnesses said, occurred at Al-Moruf Bus Stop in Iyana-Ipaja along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway Sunday evening.

It was gathered a truck laden with beer bottles collided with a bus full of worshippers of a Pentecostal church before tumbling on a car.

Most of the bottles were said to have fallen off the truck, shattering on the road and spilling the drinks.

According to witnesses, those who died included a man and a baby.

Pictures and videos of the accident shared on social media showed passengers trapped underneath vehicles as most of the injured were seen being rescued from the vehicles by other road users. Read more

Lagos pays N1.3bn to another set of retirees (Guardian)

The Lagos State Government has paid, more than N1 billion into the Retirement Savings Account (RSA’s) of 246 retirees in the state’s public service for October.

Mr Babalola Obilana, Director General, Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), made the diaclosure in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

“A total of one billion, three million, three hundred and seventy-four thousand, three hundred and seventy-two Naira, sixty-eight kobo was paid,” Obilana said.

He explained that the beneficiaries, included employees from the mainstream service, Local Government Service, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) and other parastatals of the state government. Read more

Operators of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Lagos are still quantifying the losses incurred by the two-week suspension of operations occasioned by the violence that trailed the recent #EndSARS protests across the country.

The Head of Corporate Communications of the organisation, Mr Mutiu Yekeen, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

“Like every other company that has been affected by these crises, we are still trying to quantify our losses as an organisation.

“We have not been able to operate for 14 days, and this has affected our business negatively. As an organisation, we are currently quantifying our losses,” he said. Read more

Edo Jail Break: Additional 24 inmates surrender (Thisday)

Following the October 30, 2020 expiration date handed down to inmates, who escaped from the Oko and Sapele Road Correctional Centres to return by Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, 24 of the escapees have reportedly showed up at the weekend.

They were said to have been escorted to the Correctional Centres by their parents, relations and lawyers.

Youths armed with rifles and other dangerous weapons had attacked the two correctional facilities in Benin and freed 1,900 inmates during the recent #EndSARS protest that rocked the country.

Shortly after the jailbreak, Governor Obaseki accompanied by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Johnson Kokumo; Deputy Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 5, Mr. Celestine Okoye; and the Controller of Correction Centre in Edo, Babayo Maisanda, paid an assessment visit to the prisons, when the governor gave the two-week ultimatum. The Senate has taken a swipe at the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, SAN on his position on dilapidated federal government Roads, saying that the

minister should not  set the National Assembly on collision course with the people who elected them.

According to the Senate, it took an exception to the statement credited to the  Minister of works that the National Assembly should be held responsible for the dilapidated state of Federal roads in Benue State.

Olapade Agoro, former presidential candidate, is dead (Thisday)

Former Presidential Candidate of the National Action Council, Olapade Agoro, is dead. He was aged 77.

The late politician, who was also spiritual head of Aladura Churches and Christ Merciful Church, died in the early hours of Sunday at 77 after a brief illness.

His daughter, Adeola Agoro, announced his death in a post on Facebook.

Born on October 9, 1943 at Ajibabi village of Ibadan to a Prince of Atapami Dynasty of Itapa Ijesha, the late Agoro attended California Western University, University of Ibadan and California Coast University (CCU). He held a Doctorate Degree in Interdisciplinary Engineering. Read more

Single people and couples who do not live together will be banned again from having sex during England’s second national lockdown – unless they have formed a support bubble. At least two killed in Ivory Coast election clashes: security source (Guardian)

At least two people were killed in clashes during Ivory Coast’s election which was marked by an opposition boycott over President Alassane Ouattara’s bid for a third term, a security source said Sunday.

One person was killed in central Tiebissou and another in Oume, northwest of Abidjan, during Saturday’s vote, the security source said.

Tiebissou Mayor Germain N’Dri Koffi had said violence there killed four and wounded 27 more, but police did not immediately confirm that figure. Read more

A COVID-19 infection can spread quickly and easily in a household, but there are some measures that will help stop the transmission of the bug, a new study says.

“Persons who suspect that they might have COVID-19 should isolate, stay at home, and use a separate bedroom and bathroom if feasible,” according to the study which was supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The isolation should take place immediately even before getting tests results, the study says.

US breaks world record for Covid-19 cases in 24 hours just days before election (Metro)

There has been a record surge in Covid-19 cases in the United States just days before the presidential election. Health authorities on Friday confirmed 100,233 more people had tested positive for coronavirus over the past 24 hours. The tally set a new single-day record in US cases for the fifth time in the past 10 days, surpassing the previous peak of 91,248 new infections posted a day earlier. It also represented the world’s highest national daily toll during the pandemic, exceeding India’s 24-hour record of 97,894 set in September. The US also documented a total of nine million cases on Friday, representing nearly 3% of the population, with almost 229,000 dead since the outbreak of the pandemic early this year, according to a Reuters tally of publicly reported data. But the couple changed their plans after a judge granted Meghan’s request to postpone the trial until next fall for a “confidential” reason.

Sir Bobby Charlton diagnosed with dementia (BBC)

England World Cup winner and Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton has been diagnosed with dementia.

The news follows the deaths of his older brother Jack in July and fellow World Cup-winner Nobby Stiles on Friday, both of whom had also been diagnosed with dementia.

Sir Bobby, 83, won three league titles, a European Cup and an FA Cup with United during 17 years at Old Trafford.

He finished his career with spells at Preston and Irish side Waterford.

His wife, Lady Norma Charlton, expressed the hope that the knowledge of his diagnosis – first reported by the Telegraph – could help others. Read more
