The Nigerian Army says it will re-organise the ongoing exercise Harbin Kunama III and expand its mandate following resurgence of banditry in the North West. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ekiti reviews Fayose’s last minute recruitment of 2,000 workers (Nation)

The Ekiti State Government has expressed readiness to review the procedure that led to the recruitment of no fewer than 2,000 new workers into the civil service by the immediate past administration of Ayo Fayose. The new set of workers had continually protested their non-recogition as bonafide civil servants by the current government, as well as non-payment of their salaries seven months after their engagement. A Federal High Court in Abuja has restrained the Federal Government from re-possessing the domestic wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos from its current operator and manager, Bi-Courtney Limited. The court also restrained the Federal Government and its agencies from interfering or hampering the operations of Bi-Courtney with respect to its management of the airport. NDLEA arrests Saudi-bound septuagenarian, other for alleged drug trafficking (Nation)

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) have arrested 72-year-old Mohammed Hamza and Kamisu Mohammed, 25, for attempting to ferry illicit drugs from Kano to Saudi Arabia. According to the MAKIA NDLEA Commander, Mr. Ambrose Umoru, Hamza, who hails from Gwaranduma village, Daura in Katsina state was arrested on April 24 at the screening point, while trying to board an aircraft to Saudi Arabia. The Federal High Court, Abuja on Friday, sacked Abdulrauf Modibbo as member-elect representing Yola South/Yola North/Girei Federal Constituency of Adamawa in the National Assembly. Justice Inyang Ekwo nullified Modibbo’s election while delivering judgment in a suit filed by Mustapha Usman, challenging the election. Modibbo was declared winner of the All Progressives Congress’ primaries held on Oct. 7, 2018 in Yola, and eventually represented the APC in the 2019 general elections, which he was also declared winner. Woman allegedly defrauds magistrate by posing as Police officer (Punch)

A 54-year-old woman, Olabisi Olawoye, who allegedly posed as a Police Superintendent, on Friday appeared in an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. Court remands man for sexually assaulting ten-year-old girl (Nation)

An Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos on Friday ordered that a 45-year-old man, Celestine Onwusonye, who allegedly assaulted a 10-year-old girl be remanded in prison. Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat, who did not take the plea of the defendant, ordered that the defendant be remanded in Kirikiri Prison. Some 12,700 far-right Germans are prepared to commit violence, of an estimated 24,000 far-right extremists, according to interior ministry figures. Authorities had already warned of a growing threat of violence from the extreme right, including an “affinity for weapons”, the ministry said. Turkey’s Constitutional Court on Friday rejected the appeals for freedom from Ahmet Altan and Nazli Ilicak, two prominent journalists who were taken into custody after a failed coup in 2016. The state news agency Anadolu reported Altan and Ilicak were sentenced to life imprisonment in February 2018 for their alleged ties to Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara accused of plotting the abortive putsch by a faction of the military. US jobless rate at lowest since 1969 (BBC)

The US unemployment rate dropped to its lowest level for more than 49 years in April, according to official figures. The jobless rate fell from 3.8% to 3.6%, the US Labor Department said, the lowest rate since December 1969. However, the fall in the rate was due to a large number of people – 490,000 – leaving the labour force during April. The data also showed that the world’s largest economy added a stronger-than-expected 263,000 jobs last month. Read more
