221 new cases confirmed as Nigeria’s COVID-19 infections rise to 53,021

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed a total number of 221 new cases of COVID-19 the highly infectious respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus in the country.

The NCSC made the announcement Wednesday night via tweet.

It said the total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria is now 53,021  with 40,281 patients discharged and 1,010 deaths recorded.

Africa has more than 1.2 million cases and more than 28,000 deaths.

As of August 26, the confirmed coronavirus death toll on the African continent stood at 28,289. There are 1,203,835 confirmed infections and 931,855 recoveries, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

In Kenya, President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday extended a nationwide curfew by 30 days in the East African nation’s fight against the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Kenyatta said in a televised address he had also extended the closure of bars and nightclubs for 30 days, while he increased the number of people allowed to attend events such as weddings and funerals.

Worldwide, the number of those diagnosed with COVID-19 has exceeded 24 million. According to a tally kept by Johns Hopkins University, the global total of confirmed coronavirus cases is now more than 24 million. More than 822,000 people have died, while 15.6 million have recovered.
