Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a self-acclaimed spiritualist, Mohammed Ibrahim and his accomplice, Ibrahim Abubakar for allegedly defrauding one Mohammed Gaji of the sum of N16, under the guise of conducting spiritual prayers to make him (Gaji) rich.

They were arrested at Sabon Bolori, behind Chad Basin, Borno State, in the course of investigation into a petition written against Mohammed Gaji, alleging that he misappropriated N22.2million given to him by the petitioner, Mohammed Alhaji Bukar to establish a cattle ranch business.

El-Rufai backs cattle ranching, silent on VAT saga (Guardian)

Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai of Kaduna state says ranching remains the recipe for the recurring problem of conflict between farmers and herders in the country.

The governor, who spoke to reporters at the national secretariat of the All progressive congress (APC) in Abuja, argued that the measure remains the most sustainable means to boost livestock production.

El-Rufai urged those pushing for the immediate ban on open grazing to exercise restraint as time and resources are required to put in place ranches across the country.

“We must move towards ranching. But moving towards ranching cannot be done overnight. We have to have a plan, we have to have resources and we have to implement it sensibly. It is not a matter of populist legislation or saying tomorrow this or that. It is not a solution,” El-Rufai said. Read more

Anti-vaxx celebrities are coming out of the woodwork (TheCut)

Nicki Minaj appears to have broken the dam on celebrity anti-vaccine sentiment. Following a series of tweets in which Minaj expressed skepticism of the vaccine rooted largely in misinformation concerning her cousin’s friend’s balls, supermodel Doutzen Kroes apparently felt empowered to share a post of her own announcing that she would not be getting a COVID-19 vaccine. Upon returning from a months-long social-media fast, the former Victoria’s Secret angel posted a photo of herself in sepia with a lengthy caption defending her right to forgo the shot.

“I can no longer turn a blind eye to the injustice that is happening in front of us,” Kroes wrote. “Although my hands are shaking while writing this, I feel it is time to choose courage over comfort and speak my truth.” She continued, “I will not be forced to take the shot. I will not be forced to prove my health to participate in society. I will not accept exclusion of people based on their medical status.”

Kroes’s post fails to mention that the FDA and the CDC have declared the vaccines safe and effective, with both entities strongly urging everyone over the age of 12 to get the shot. Nor does it acknowledge the fact that vaccines help curb the spread of COVID-19 through communities, keeping both the vaccinated and those who cannot yet be vaccinated safer. Read more

Everyone Needs to Hear These 10 Words from Jason Sudeikis’ Ted Lasso Emmy Acceptance Speech (Inc.)

On Sunday night, Hollywood gathered for the 73rd Emmy Awards presentation. Headed into the night, Ted Lasso had already set records for a freshman comedy series, with 20 nominations. That’s really quite remarkable when you consider almost no one had any idea what the show was about when it first arrived. The premise, itself, seemed pretty absurd. How do you make a show about a character from an eight-year-old commercial?

Actually, the idea that Apple was launching a streaming video service seemed, well, absurd. When Apple TV+ launched two years ago, almost no one took it seriously. It had a  handful of good shows, but a handful of shows isn’t what makes a streaming service successful. It certainly isn’t what it takes to compete with Netflix or Disney+, the latter of which launched within a week of Apple’s version.

Then, late last year–in the middle of a pandemic–came a quirky show about an American football coach hired to manage an English football club, despite knowing nothing about the sport we call soccer. It was an almost instant hit. Read more

How to get your body to poop on a schedule, according to Gastros (Livestrong)

People, let’s talk about your poop schedule. Are you someone who goes like clockwork? Or are you more the type who has no idea if or when the urge to go will greet you?

First thing to know: Gastroenterologists consider normal bowel movement (BM) frequency to be anywhere in the realm of three times a week to several times a day, says Baldeep S. Pabla, MD, gastroenterologist and assistant professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Secondly, your body is actually programmed to want to go in the morning, and if you take advantage of that opportunity, you can get yourself into a routine.

Why is the a.m. prime time? “During sleep, colon motility generally stops,” Dr. Pabla says. Read more

Barcelona can’t play ‘tiki-taka’ -Koeman (Tribune)

Under-fire Barcelona boss, Ronald Koeman has questioned how he can be expected to play like the side that dominated football in the early 2010s with the squad he has at his disposal.

Koeman has been criticised by president Joan Laporta for his reluctance to conform to the team’s preferred style of tiki-taka, the short passing system set up by Pep Guardiola and deployed to perfection as the team won the Champions League in 2009 and 2011.

It’s a far cry from the 54 crosses Barcelona put in in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Granada, which saw centre-back Gerard Pique playing as an auxiliary attacker alongside Luuk de Jong. Ronald Araujo netted a late equaliser, but fans were still audibly unhappy with the way the team had played.

“We had to look for another way to draw or win with Pique and Araujo,” said Koeman after the game (via Goal). “We did everything to win the game. Read more

Robert Lewandowski wins Golden Shoe after prolific Bayern Munich season (DW)

Named the best male footballer in the world in 2020, Robert Lewandowski has now been officially crowned the most prolific goalscorer in Europe last season. The Bayern Munich man seems to improve with age.

After a season in which he outscored six Bundesliga clubs despite missing a month through injury, Robert Lewandowski has been awarded the European Golden Shoe for his record–breaking 41 goals in the 2020–21 Bundesliga campaign.

“I’m very proud, very pleased,” he said after receiving the award at a ceremony at the club museum in the Allianz Arena in Munich on Tuesday, adding that he still couldn’t believe he had actually surpassed Gerd Müller’s 40 goals from the 1971–72 season.

PSG vs Metz: Injured Lionel Messi ruled out (Punch)

Lionel Messi will miss Paris Saint-Germain’s game away to Metz on Wednesday due to a knee injury which coach Mauricio Pochettino has said was the real reason behind his surprise decision to take the six-time Ballon d’Or winner off against Lyon at the weekend.

The Argentine star underwent an MRI on Tuesday after taking a knock to his left knee during Sunday’s 2-1 win. Results showed signs of bone bruising, the club said in a statement.

Messi was replaced by Achraf Hakimi, a full-back, after 76 minutes against Lyon, on his first home appearance as a PSG player since arriving from Barcelona.

The 34-year-old appeared to reject Pochettino’s hand as he walked past his coach towards the Paris bench but the former Tottenham Hotspur boss later defended his decision to take Messi off without mentioning the injury. Read more

Chelsea’s Alonso to stop taking the knee (Guardian)

Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso will no longer take the knee as a sign of protest against racism because the Spain left-back believes the gesture is “losing a bit of strength.”

Alonso will instead point to an anti-racism badge on his shirt before kick-off.

Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick started the trend of taking the knee to protest against police brutality and racial inequality.

Premier League clubs first began to perform the gesture when the 2019/20 season recommenced after a three-month stoppage due to the coronavirus pandemic in the wake of protests over the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer in the United States. Read more
