239 new COVID-19 cases take Nigeria’s tally to 54,247

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed a total number of 239 new cases of COVID-19 the highly infectious respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus in the country.

The NCDC made the announcement Tuesday night on its verified Twitter handle.

It said the total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria is now 54,247 with 42,010 patients discharged and 1,023 deaths recorded.

Africa has more than 1.2 million cases and more than 29,000 deaths.

As of September 1, the confirmed coronavirus death toll on the continent stood at 29,833. There are 1,252,552 confirmed infections and 985,803 recoveries, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Egypt on Tuesday reopened its ancient sites in Cairo and elsewhere in the country for the first time since they were closed in March to stem the spread of coronavirus.

The reopening came despite a recent upward trend in new infections. Antiquities Minister Khalid el-Anany says museums, temples and other sites are reopened at 50 per cent capacity.

Worldwide, the number of those diagnosed with COVID-19 has exceeded 26 million. According to the tally kept by Johns Hopkins University, the global total of confirmed coronavirus cases is now more than 25.6 million. More than 854,000 people have died, while 16.9 million have recovered.
