24,720 GBV cases reported nationwide in one month, says minister (Vanguard)

The Minister for Women Affairs, Mrs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, says 24,720 Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases were reported in the 36 states and the FCT between September and October 3.

Kennedy-Ohanenye made this known while briefing newsmen on the incessant cases of reported GBV, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and other harmful traditional practices in the country.

The minister said, “We recorded about 24,720 cases of various violence that were reported across the 36 states and FCT. Read more

President Bola Tinubu has replaced Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, a former Ministerial nominee from Kaduna State, with Balarabe Abbas.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced this while reading a letter from the president on Tuesday.

Senate bars first-term senators from running for Senate president, deputy (Nation)

The Senate on Tuesday, October 3, amended its standing orders to effectively stop first-term senators from vying for the position of Senate president and deputy Senate president.

This move by the Senate came a few months after Senator Abdulaziz Yari, a first-term senator who had earlier served in the House of Representatives, contested against Senator Godswill Akpabio for the position of Senate president.

With the new amendment to the standing orders of the Senate, first-term senators are now excluded from those qualified or eligible to contest for the position of presiding officers of the Red Chambers. Read more 

LAWMA seals Alamutu Market in Mushin (Tribune)

Due to poor sanitary conditions and inappropriate garbage disposal practices, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has closed the Alamutu (Ologede) Market in Idi-oro, Mushin.

Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, stated that the action was part of LAWMA’s ongoing efforts to tackle prevalent pollution in marketplaces across the state.

He went on to say that strict sanitary standards were required for all marketplaces in order to ensure the health of dealers and customers. Read more 

NPA ejects policemen from barracks, occupants get N200k each (Punch)

There is anxiety among policemen who reside in the Nigerian Port Authority barracks in the Sunrise, Apapa area of Lagos State as they have been asked by the NPA authorities to exit the premises within two weeks.

Some policemen who spoke with PUNCH Metro on Monday said the barracks had been sold and that residents were paid N200,000 each to leave the premises.

Our correspondent learnt that while the policemen were initially given three months to vacate the barracks, the deadline had been reduced to two weeks which did not go down well with the affected persons. Read more 

NRC to punish erring staff bent on tarnishing its image (Guardian)

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has promised to punish erring members of staff who are bent on tarnishing the image of the state-owned enterprise.

NRC issued this threat on Tuesday via a statement on X (formerly Twitter) following a complaint lodged by Daramola E. Adenike (@Dara4Enjoyment) about its officials.

“On my way to Lagos from Ibadan after a weekend getaway with my friends today, October 2, 2023, some NRC employees lured us to board the train without tickets,” Adenike posted. Read more

Police arraign 14 suspects for raising false alarm over organ disappearance (Leadership)

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) said 14 male suspects were being prosecuted in Court for giving false information and inciting public disturbance about the purported disappearance of their organs in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

This was revealed by the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Haruna Garba, while speaking to select journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the Commissioner: “the FCT Police command has recorded over 10 cases of alleged disappearance of male organs across the Territory and the escalating incidents of mob action by irate youths. It takes the intervention of the Police Command to prevent the loss of life and property and restore law and order. Read more 

Abduction of 25 Ondo church members, act of wickedness — CAN (Vanguard)

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has described the abduction of 25 choir members of the CAC Oke Igan, in Akure, Ondo state, as an act of wickedness.

At least 13 dead in Spain nightclub fire (ABC)

At least 13 people were killed and several others were injured when a fire early Sunday ripped through adjoining nightclubs in Spain, authorities said.

Search-and-rescue crews are still looking for people unaccounted for in the blaze in the town of Murcia in southern Spain, officials said.

A suicide bomber detonated an explosive device in the heart of the Turkish capital, Ankara, while a second assailant was killed in a shootout with police Sunday, the interior minister said.
