26-year-old pleads guilty to cable wire theft charge

A 26-year-old man, Akande Lekan, was, on Friday, arraigned by the Lagos State Police Command for the alleged theft of cable wire valued at N200,000.

He was arraigned at the Chief Magistrate Court, Yaba, before Magistrate O.Y. Adefope who charged the defendant with two counts of theft.

The charges alleged that the defendant stole earth cable wire valued at N200,000, property of Vita Construction Limited, on July 14, 2024.

PUNCH Metro gathered that a worker at Vita Construction Limited reported the incident to the police, stating that security guards at their construction site at the British High Commission, along Walter Carrington Crescent, Victoria Island, Lagos, caught the defendant stealing their earth cable wire worth N200,000.

After the case was reported, the defendant was arrested and questioned. He confessed to cutting the earth cable wire to sell it but was caught in the process.

Prosecutor Haruna Magaji informed the court that the alleged offence was committed on July 14, 2024, contravening Sections 350 and 287(7) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

The prosecutor also said that the cable wire was recovered, and the complainant’s statement, confessional statements, and statements from the Investigating Police Officer served as evidence that the alleged offences were committed. (Punch)
