3 children die after taking tea ‘poisoned by stepmother’ (DailyTrust)

Three children who were residents of Makara Huta community in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State lost their lives after drinking tea allegedly poisoned by their stepmother.

The 22-year-old Yobe housewife identified as Khadija Yakubu has been arrested by the police.

She was said to have poisoned the tea which four of the children of her husband’s first wife took.

While three of them died, one is said to be in an unconscious state.

The incident, which happened Friday, has since thrown  into panic. Read more

Lagos DSVRT releases report, kicks off DSV awareness month activities (Guardian)

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice/Chairman Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT), Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN) has revealed that according to data, 4302 children have been assaulted in the state from May 2019 to August of this year; and of this number, 2432 were under the age of nine.

He added that 10, 007 cases of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and non-GBV cases was reported to them and analysis of the statistics revealed that 91% of women were abused while just 9% were men. In addition, 92% of adults in the age range of 18-45yrs had the highest cases reported and 73 per cent of Domestic Violence was reported for adults, which turned out to be the highest form of GBV against adults while 69% of emotional abuse was reported for children who have witnessed Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and other assaults.

Of the 20 Local Government Areas in the state, Alimosho, Kosofe, Ikorodu and Ifako Ijaye LGAs recorded the highest reported incidents for both adults and children. Read more

Tension in Enugu community over demolition of blind man’s building under construction (Sun)

Ihekwuenu-Aku autonomous community in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, is under tension following demolition of a two bedroom apartment under construction that belongs to Mr. Anibueze Nnadi a visually impaired person by unidentified persons over land ownership dispute.

The building which has been roofed with aluminium roofing sheets, plastered and was recieving finishing touches was completely pulled down on Thursday afternoon by men believe to be paid thugs.

Sit-at-home: Kidnappers, criminals have hijacked IPOB agitation, says Umahi (Punch)

Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, has said that the secessionist agitation of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra has been hijacked by criminals and kidnappers.

The governor also said that the proscribed group is no longer in control of the whole agitation as a result of the alleged hijack by unscrupulous elements.

Umahi, who is the Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, spoke on Friday on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ breakfast programme monitored by The PUNCH.

Okonjo-Iweala’s brother, Ogwashi-Uku monarch’s convoy attacked (ThisDay)

HRM Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II, the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku kingdom in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State has escaped what appeared like a planned attack on the monarch.

Girls excluded as Afghan secondary schools reopen (BBC)

The Taliban have excluded girls from Afghan secondary schools, after they ordered only boys and male teachers to return to the classroom.

Schoolgirls told the BBC they were devastated not to be returning. “Everything looks very dark,” one said.

A Taliban spokesman said there were plans to open girls’ schools soon.

But there are fears Afghanistan is returning to the harsh rule of the 1990s when a similar ban on girls’ schooling was in place. Read more

Tunisians stage protest over President Saied’s seizure of powers (AlJazeera)

Protesters have taken to the streets of Tunisia’s capital, in a rare show of public dissent towards President Kais Saied’s move to seize extra powers.

Thousands of people rallied in the centre of Tunis on Saturday chanting, “shut down the coup” and “we want a return to legitimacy”. Saied supporters held a counter-demonstration chanting, “the people want to dissolve parliament”.

The protest, which was met by a heavy police presence on Habib Bourguiba avenue, was the first major demonstration since Saied declared on July 25 he was sacking the prime minister, suspending parliament and assuming executive authority – moves his opponents branded a coup.

The former constitutional law professor justified his move by citing emergency measures in the constitution that his critics and many legal scholars said did not support his intervention. Read more

Rugby Championship: Australia beat South Africa 30-17 in Brisbane (BBC)

Len Ikitau and Marika Koroibete scored two tries apiece as Australia secured a second successive victory over world champions South Africa in the Rugby Championship in Brisbane.

Ikitau touched down twice in the first half, although the Springboks took the lead through centre Lukhanyo Am two minutes into the second half.

Koroibete struck twice in six minutes to seal a bonus-point Australia win.

Rooney heard about Derby administration plan on TV news (France 24)

Derby County manager Wayne Rooney said Saturday he had only found out about the financially-stricken club’s plan to enter administration by watching television news bulletins.

The 35-year-old former Manchester United and England striker, in his first managerial role, also confirmed he had yet to speak with County chairman Mel Morris.

Second-tier English side Derby announced late Friday the club’s directors “had no choice but to make the tough decision” to file notice to appoint administrators following a failure to secure new owners and because of the impact of Covid-19 on their finances.

Raphael Varane reveals how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Paul Pogba convinced him to join Man Utd (Metro)

Raphael Varane has revealed that he spoke to both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Paul Pogba before making the decision to join Manchester United in the summer.
