“The parents brought the child to hospital on Sunday evening, immediately, a Paediatrician looked at the child and confirmed him dead.

2023 Budget Proposal: LCCI cautions on new N10.57t loans, urges FG to seek ‘efficient alternatives’ (Tribune)

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has urged the Federal Government to consider more ‘efficient alternatives’ to borrowings, rather than issuing N10.57trillion new loans to finance a deficit of N10.78 trillion, as proposed in the 2023 budget.

The Chamber, in a statement issued on Sunday, and signed by its Director General, Dr Chinyere Almona, argued that, while a budget deficit of N10.78 trillion was not out of place, it, however, disagreed with issuing N10.57 trillion new loans, to finance the deficit.

The business advocacy body, therefore, called on the Federal Government to embrace equity financing, as an exclusive way of funding budget deficits; since it would save the country from paying huge interest payments.

“We are of the view that while nothing is wrong with the N10.78 trillion deficit, everything is wrong with the plan to issue N10.57 trillion (N8.8 trillion in new commercial loans and N1.77 trillion drawdown on bilateral and multilateral loans) new loans to finance the deficit, at a time that we are already placed on the watch-lists of some of our foreign bondholders. Alan Moore says superhero movie boom caused rise in fascism (NME)

Comic book writer Alan Moore has argued that the dominance of superhero films has caused a rise in fascism.

The legendary writer, who is well-known for works such as Watchmen, V For Vendetta and Batman: The Killing Joke, reflected on the dominance of the likes of Marvel and DC in the cinema world, suggesting that “simpler realities” could be dangerous.

“I said roundabout 2011 that I thought that it had serious and worrying implications for the future if millions of adults were queueing up to see Batman movies,” he told The Guardian.

“Because that kind of infantilisation – that urge towards simpler times, simpler realities – that can very often be a precursor to fascism,” Moore added, noting how “when we ourselves took a bit of a strange detour in our politics” when Donald Trump was elected, superhero films were very dominant. Darryl Jones: In The Blood: New music documentary stars Rolling Stones’ bassist, Miles Davis associate (Deadline)

When the Rolling Stones’ original bassist Bill Wyman retired in 1993, it might have thrown sand into the steel wheels of the world’s preeminent rock n’ roll band. Instead, the group was able somehow to find a replacement worthy of Wyman in the fleet fingers and thumping thumb of Darryl Jones.

The acclaimed musician, who cut his chops playing with Miles Davis barely out of his teens, is the subject of the new documentary Darryl Jones: In the Blood. The film from Greenwich Entertainment, directed by Eric Hamburg, is now playing in theaters in limited release and debuted Friday on VOD platforms, including Amazon Prime and Apple TV.

“It’s not an easy thing to replace someone who is an integral founding member of a band like the Stones,” Hamburg noted at a Q&A for the film in Santa Monica Thursday night. “And yet Darryl was able to do it. And I think he’s brought a new element to the Stones that they needed. I don’t know if they could have gone on for the last 30 years if they hadn’t had Darryl Jones playing with them.”

At the Q&A, Jones pondered what he had to learn about the Stones and their music to earn a place in the band. Read more

Robbie Williams: Partying with Oasis was the start of my new life (MusicNews)

Robbie Williams admitted partying with Oasis at Glastonbury was the catalyst for his “new life” after he left Take That as he kicked off his ‘XXV Tour’ at The O2 in London on Sunday night (09.10.22).

The 48-year-old singer reminisced on stage about how he met Liam and Noel Gallagher at the world famous music festival in Somerset, South West England, back in 1995 shortly after he made the momentous decision to walk away from the chart-topping boy band.

Although relations between Robbie and the Gallagher brothers soured soon after, with Noel’s “fat dancer from Take That” jibe kicking off one of music’s most infamous feuds, the pop icon accepts that moment in time set him on a course to become one of the biggest solo singers of all-time.

Before performing a cover of Oasis classic ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’, Robbie said: “I started getting ideas about writing my own songs. One thing led to another and I made the cardinal mistake of breaking the rules. They couldn’t contain me anymore. Read more

Ex-Fed chair Ben Bernanke, 2 other economists win Nobel Prize in economics for bank research  (USAToday)

Former U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke, who put his academic expertise on the Great Depression to work reviving the American economy after the 2007-2008 financial crisis, won the Nobel Prize in economic sciences along with two other U.S.-based economists for their research into the fallout from bank failures.

Bernanke was recognised Monday along with Douglas W. Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig. The Nobel panel at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm said the trio’s research had shown “why avoiding bank collapses is vital.”

With their findings in the early 1980s, the laureates laid the foundations for regulating financial markets, the panel said.

“Financial crises and depressions are kind of the worst thing that can happen to the economy,” said John Hassler of the Committee for the Prize in Economic Sciences. “These things can happen again. And we need to have an understanding of the mechanism behind those and what to do about it. And the laureates this year provide that.” Read more

Disgraced sprinter CJ Ujah banned after failed drugs test cost Team GB Olympic silver (Mirror)

Disgraced Great British sprinter CJ Ujah has received a backdated 22-month ban after failing a drug test which resulted in Team GB being stripped of their Tokyo Olympics silver medals in the 4×100-metre relay.

Ujah tested positive for banned substances ostarine and S-23 after last year’s games. The 28-year-old admitted that he had “unknowingly consumed a contaminated substance” and said that he would “regret for the rest of his life” the situation.

His Great Britain team-mates Zharnel Hughes, Richard Kilty and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake were also stripped of their medals following a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in February.

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) have ruled that Ujah’s violation was ‘not intentional’ as he had claimed and was a result of his ‘ingestions of a contaminated supplement’. He was slapped with a two-year ban which was reduced to 22 months due to the sprinter’s admission of the violation. Read more
