NDLEA intercepts 3.30kg cocaine in Lagos airport (Punch)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested one Ukaegbu Onyekachi with a 3.30 kilogram of cocaine at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos State.

It was gathered that Onyekachi, who arrived from Sao Paulo, Brazil, via an Ethiopian airline, was intercepted on Monday during an inward clearance of passengers of the airline at the E Arrival Hall of the airport.

In a statement on Tuesday, the airport commander of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Garba, said Onyekachi concealed the drug inside T-shirt stickers.

He said, “The hard drug was cleverly concealed in T-shirts stickers, but he couldn’t escape the eagle eyes of our detectives.”

Similarly, the FCT command of the agency raided some drug spots in Abuja and arrested 14 people including three suspected fake soldiers and different quantities of cocaine, codeine; Rohypnol and Indian hemp were allegedly recovered from them. Read more

Unemployed man in court over unlawful possession of 3 cell phones (Vanguard)

A 20-year-old unemployed man, Samsudeen Jimoh, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court,

for allegedly being in possession of three cell phones suspected to have been stolen.

Jimoh, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and unlawful possession.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Ajayi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences with others still at large on Jan.12 at Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos. Read more

CDA kicks as land grabbers invade Magodo estate (Punch)

The Gateway Zone Community Development Association, Magodo G.R.A Phase 1, Lagos State, has decried the invasion of the estate by suspected land grabbers on Monday and Tuesday.

PUNCH Metro was told that the invasion was to enable the men to gain access to the greenbelt located in a vast gorge separating Magodo GRA Phases 1 and 2, in the Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area of the state.

A security guard in the area, George Celestine, said no fewer than 15 suspected land grabbers stormed the estate, claiming that the gorge belonged to them. Read more

Lagos Assembly passes law prescribing 21-year jail term for cultists (Guardian)

The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed a bill banning the activities of cultists and related illegal societies across the state into a law.

The new law stipulates a 21-year imprisonment for anyone found guilty of engaging in cult activities. It also stipulates a 15-year jail term for anyone convicted of abetting cultists or who allows his premises to be used by cultists as a meeting place.

Speaker of the Lagos State Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, directed the clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, to transmit the law to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for assent.

The proposed legislation titled ‘A law to provide for the prohibition of unlawful societies and cultism in Lagos state and for other connected purposes’, it says a society shall be regarded as unlawful if its members carry out illegal, destructive activities contrary to public policy, safety and peace of members of the public. Police arraign man, 24, over alleged US$600 theft (Vanguard)

Police on Monday arraigned a 24-year-old house help, Akpan Joseph, before a Badagry Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing US$600 (N240,000) from employer.

Joseph, who is of no fixed address is facing a count charge of theft.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Police prosecutor, ASP Akpan Nkem, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offence sometimes on Nov, 2020, at No 1, Victor Close, Iba area of Lagos.

Nkem said the defendant stole US$600, an equivalent of N240,000 belonging to one Victor Ekeleme, the complainant. Read more

Lagos community laments hoodlums reign of terror (Punch)

The residents of Oba Disu Faronbi Street and its environs in the Shasha area of Lagos State have lamented attacks by hoodlums in the community.

The residents, who noted that a community ground in the area had become a den for the hoodlums, said people always stayed indoors from 7pm when the hoodlums unleashed terror on motorists, traders and residents who stayed out late.

A resident, Tokunbo Coker, who claimed to have been attacked by the gang on January 20, 2021, said his vehicle developed a fault when the hoodlums surrounded him.

He said, “They should be between the ages of 23 and 25. One of them pretended to be willing to assist me to get a mechanic. The boy asked me to give him my phone so he could call the mechanic. He collected it and started walking away very fast. I called out to him, but he kept on moving until he got to a block industry in the area. I followed him there. Read more

One killed, scores injured as Lagos Island area boys clash (Tribune)

One person has been killed and scores of others injured in a renewed rivalry clash between hoodlums from Agarawu and Onala areas of Lagos Island in Lagos State.

Vehicles and shops were also over the weekend vandalised by the rampaging hoodlums, who also took advantage of the situation to rob unsuspecting traders and residents of the two Lagos Island communities.

The renewed clash has been blamed on efforts by the two groups to control motor parks and collection of levies in the areas.

The deceased man has been identified simply as Sulaimon Escaper, a resident of Agarawu area, whose son was accused to be a member of the hoodlums in the area. Read more

Lagos police arrest suspected female armed robber, 14 others (ThisDay)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 15 suspected armed robbers in the state, including a female suspect.

The Rapid Response Squad of the state police command arrested the 15 suspects, including 13 traffic armed robbers in operations carried out between January 29 and 30.

According to a statement signed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the suspects were arrested in Oshodi and Ketu areas of the state.

Adejobi disclosed in the statement that the arrest is part of the Command’s efforts at weeding up criminals suspected to be attacking motorists and commuters in traffic. Read more

Sanwo-Olu to Lagosians: Wear your face mask or go to jail (Independent)

Governor Babjide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has made it mandatory for residents of the state to wear face masks.

A defaulter of this order henceforth faces a six-month- jail term.

This is sequent to the COVID-19 Health Protection Regulations, 2021 recently signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

This order has come just about twenty-four hours the governor announced the approval of a N200-million-fund to support the ongoing COVID-19 patient management and treatment efforts of two Federal Government Treatment Centres in Lagos.

The governor stated this on Sunday while addressing State House Correspondents on COVID-19 update in the state at Lagos House, Marina. Sanwo-Olu said:

“The importance of non-pharmaceutical interventions cannot be overemphasized. All residents of Lagos State must continue to abide by the public health and safety regulations that have been issued by the health authorities, including the following: Wear a mask everywhere, ensure that you wash your re-usable mask regularly, and also properly dispose of used disposable masks, if you operate an office or business, insist on the wearing of masks before customers or clients can be granted access or rendered service.
