3 suspected Coronavirus patients discharged in Lagos (DailyTrust) 

Nigeria has only one confirmed case of coronavirus as at yesterday, as the three suspects quarantined in Lagos have tested negative to the disease, Lagos Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said yesterday. One of the suspects quarantined was a Nigerian who travelled to France eight days ago and arrived the country four days ago. He developed headache and respiratory problems which led to his isolation. Two other travelers from England and China were also quarantined after they developed certain symptoms. According to Abayomi, their samples were collected for tests to ascertain if they have been affected by Coronavirus. However, the commissioner tweeted that the three suspects had tested negative and discharged after they were certified free of the virus. Read more

That cruel fate wasn’t what she bargained for when she married Sani in 2018. With the care and love he showered on her, she had no cause to think her husband was a suspected cult member the police tagged him, let alone anticipate the tragedy that struck on Sunday, September 1, 2019.

A cult clash between Eye and Aiye members disrupted the oro festival held in the community that day, resulting in the gruesome killing of Sani and three others. Read more

UTME candidates can print examination slips – JAMB (Guardian)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says prospective candidates for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) are free to print their examination slips for the Computer Based Test.

The board’s UTME is scheduled to commence nationwide on Saturday, March 14.

The Head, Media and Information of the board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos that the examination slips could be printed anywhere.

According to him, candidates are expected to look out for the locations of their centres before their examination dates. Read more

In order to provide more clarity on the Finance Act 2020, a group, Joint Minds International, JMI, has gathered professionals in the tax environment to discuss and demystify the Act.

This has followed the issue of misconceptions and vagueness that surrounds the Act which they said may threaten its objectives.

The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has vowed to nab users of unregistered SIM cards. The Executive Vice Chairman of the commission, Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, said the commission will collaborate with security agencies in achieving its target. Speaking in an interview with journalists after the NCC special day at the ongoing Kaduna International Trade Fair, the NCC boss, who was represented by the commission’s Director of Zonal Operations, Hajiya Amina Shehu, said the commission’s target is to ensure that all SIM cards are registered. IDPs community in Abuja gets primary health care centre (Nation)

In its effort to see that there is easy access to qualitative health services, especially among the poor and most vulnerable, the Christ Embassy Church has commissioned a multi-million state-of-the-art primary health care centre for the Waru community in Abuja.

The community, which is home to several camps for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), had been bedeviled with little or no adequate health services, which had led to several deaths in the community, especially women and children.

However, when the Innercity Mission arm of the Christ Embassy Church visited the area, it decided to build the modern health care centre in the heart of the community. Read more

A 2019 Batch ‘A’ corps member, Olayinka Emmanuel, who contracted Lassa fever in Asaba, the Delta State capital, was full of praise during the passing out parade in Asaba on Thursday.

Emmanuel was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, a month ago by his colleagues, where he received first aid before he was referred to the Emergency Unit of the Specialist Hospital, Irrua, in Edo State.

The following day, rumour had it that he died of the disease.

But glittering in his fully-kitted NYSC regalia at the Cenotaph on Thursday Yinka, as his fondly called by his friends, said, “Here I am, I am alive.”

He said since the rumour had gone round that he was dead and he survived, all would work together for long life and prosperity for him. Read more

Renewed killing forces Benue govt to suspend return of IDPs to their homes (Vanguard)

The Benue State Government has announced the suspension of plans to return the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, to their original habitations, citing sudden heightening state of insecurity occasioned the renewed influx of armed herdsmen and resurgence of armed attacks on innocent people in the state.

Meanwhile, the state has called on the Federal Government to urgently release its share of the N10 billion it promised for states that were affected by herdsmen attacks resulting to killings and IDPs. Benue State Government had a share in the money and was yet to receive any amount since over a year the government made the promise. Read more

Hotel collapse traps 70 in eastern China (Guardian)

Around 70 people were trapped after a hotel collapsed in China’s eastern Fujian province on Saturday evening, officials said.

Xinjia Hotel collapsed around 7:30 pm (1130 GMT) and around 23 people had been rescued by 9:00 pm, according to a Quanzhou city government statement.

The 80-room hotel was recently converted to a quarantine facility for people who had recent contact with coronavirus patients, the People’s Daily state newspaper reported.

State news agency Xinhua said rescue efforts were ongoing. Read more

Coronavirus cases hit 100,000 as China exports dip (Punch)

The number of cases from the new coronavirus topped 100,000 worldwide as official data Saturday showed a significant hit to Chinese exports after the deadly outbreak brought much of the country to a halt.

The World Health Organization called the spread of the virus “deeply concerning” as a wave of countries reported their first cases of the disease — which has now killed nearly 3,500 people and infected more than 100,000 across 92 nations and territories.

Torrential rain kills at least 20 in Pakistan (Guardian)

At least 20 people in Pakistan are dead and dozens more injured after torrential rainstorms collapsed several homes, officials said Saturday.

Heavy rains have lashed stretches of the country near the Afghan border since Thursday.

Fourteen children and three women were killed in “rain-related incidents” in northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, local relief official Taimur Ali said.

The National Disaster Management Authority confirmed those deaths, adding that three more people had died in southwest Balochistan province. Read more

Joseph McCann: Girl, 17, raped by serial sex attacker speaks out (BBC)

A teenage girl who was raped by serial sex attacker Joseph McCann has said she feels “failed in every single way”.

The 17-year-old and her younger brother were both attacked after McCann tied up their mother in their home in May.

The girl told the BBC she now lives in a “constant fear of everything” and is “confused” as to why the 35-year-old was not recalled to prison.

It comes after a report said probation staff were warned he posed a risk of sexual offending. Read more

Nine killed in Mexico shootout with police (Punch)

Nine people were killed in a bloody confrontation Friday in western Mexico between a criminal gang and agents investigating a suspected kidnapping, officials said.

The dead included two officers and six people believed to have been held captive in a house in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco state, the state prosecutor’s office said.

Another man died on the street.

Jalisco has been hard-hit by violence linked to organized crime, particularly the powerful Jalisco New Generation drug cartel.

In the latest incident, the kidnappers opened fire on the officers and shot their captives when they were cornered, state prosecutor Gerardo Octavio Solis Gomez said. Read more

Sacked DR Congo general died by ‘hanging’ (Guardian)

DR Congo’s sacked former deputy chief of military intelligence, who was under European Union sanctions, died by hanging, President Felix Tshisekedi said Saturday.

Delphin Kahimbi, 50, a close associate of former president Joseph Kabila, had died of a heart attack on February 28 at home in Kinshasa, his wife and media reports said.

But rumours abounded that he was killed or committed suicide.

Tshisekedi ordered a probe into the death, and the preliminary findings were made public on Saturday after a cabinet meeting. Read more

A US publishing house has cancelled plans to publish a memoir by Woody Allen, the award-winning film director who has been accused of sexual abuse.

Hachette Book Group (HBG) acted on Friday a day after its employees staged a walkout in New York and Boston to protest against the publication.

Allen’s son and daughter, Ronan and Dylan Farrow, had condemned the deal.

Mr Farrow, a journalist, wrote a book for HBG last year about how powerful men avoid punishment for misconduct.
