Lagos records 3,089 cases of sexual, domestic violence in 8 months (Leadership)

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) says no fewer than 3,089 cases of sexual and domestic violence were reported in the state in the past eight months.

The State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, made the disclosure on Monday in Lagos at a news conference commemorating “The Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month’’.

Theme of 2018 is: “Securing the Home against Violence: Everyone’s Responsibility.”

Kazeem said that the figure was over 200 per cent increase compared to last 2017 figure of 1,044.

The commissioner, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry for Justice, Mrs Funmilola Odunlami, also said that seven people were convicted during the period under review. “From January to August 2018, DSVRT received 3,089 reported cases.

This indicates that the number of reports has doubled since 2017 when DVSRT handled a total of 1044 cases for the entire year. Read more

Soldier stabs undergraduate over debt in Lagos (Punch)

The family of a 27-year-old undergraduate student of the Lagos State Polytechnic, Abraham Enebeli, has demanded justice after he was allegedly stabbed by a soldier.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Abraham was allegedly stabbed in the Ijegun area of Lagos on Saturday by a soldier attached to the Ojo Military Cantonment.

It was gathered that the military official, identified as Daniel Martins, allegedly broke a bottle and stabbed Abraham in the neck during an argument between the two.

Abraham’s brother, Paul Enebeli, who spoke to PUNCH Metro, said Martins was hired by one Chukwudi. Read more

Teenagers sell stolen laptop for N2,000 in Lagos (Punch)

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested two teenagers for allegedly breaking into a shop on Jakande Estate, in the Ejigbo area of Lagos State, and stealing a laptop.

The police also arrested two others – 27-year-old Adejagun Babatunde and 20-year-old Lawal Wasiu – for allegedly receiving the stolen laptop from the teenage burglars.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, on Wednesday said the case was worrisome because minors were involved.

Imohimi said, “The command’s operatives attached to the Ejigbo Police Division on September 2, 2018, arrested two teenagers (names withheld), aged 13 and 14, who specialised in breaking into people’s shops. Read more

Robber jumps into Lagos Lagoon with loot during police chase (Punch)

The operatives of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos have apprehended and arrested three ‘one-chance robbers’ on the Third Mainland Bridge.

One of the suspects jumped into the Lagoon with the gang’s loot to escape the police.

According to the Facebook page of the squad, the robbers including, John Akinyemi, 27; Paul Oliseh, 37 and Amos Williams, were arrested on Monday afternoon on the Third Mainland bridge.

RRS revealed that its men monitoring the Iyana-Oworo axis of Lagos chased and arrested the suspects after a tip-off.

They chased the one-chance robbers operating from a Volkswagen transporter bus with registration number, AKD 562 XP to the bridge. Read more

Son smashes stabiliser, wooden stool on mother’s head (Vanguard)

An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Tuesday remanded in prison a 29-year-old man, Taiwo Akinola, for smashing a stabilizer on his sexagenarian-mother’s head.

The accused is facing a attempted murder charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Komolafe, who gave the order, said the accused should be kept behind bars at Ikoyi Prison pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Earlier, Police Prosecutor Kehinde Omisakin told the court that the accused committed the offence on Aug. 19 at 8.00 a.m. at No. 2 Raji Ajanaku St., Ayobo, a Lagos suburb.

Omisakin said the accused had in a bid to murder his mother, Iyabo Fawole, 68, smashed an automatic voltage stabilizer and a wooden stool on her head. Read more

Man rapes 19-yr-old girl while helping her with varsity admission (Vanguard)

A Lagos magistrate’s court sitting at Igbosere, has remanded a 35-year-old man Stanley Ekere, in prison custody for allegedly raping a 19-year-old teenager under disguise of helping her to gain admission into a higher institution.

Magistrate B. I. Bakare remanded Ekere, pending the outcome of legal advice from the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP.

The defendant, who resides at Agege area of Lagos, is facing a count charge of rape. It was gathered that before the victim was raped, she had told the defendant that she was no longer interested in him helping her gain admission into a higher institution.

According to a source, the defendant had pleaded with the victim to still trust him with helping her to gain admission, but when she refused, he tore her clothes and raped her. Read more

Man, 40, docked for allegedly raping teenager (Vanguard)

An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday remanded one Olajide Ajayi, for allegedly raping a teenager. Ajayi, 40, appeared before the court on a charge of unlawful sexual intercourse. He, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Chinalu Uwadione, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Aug. 29 at 11.30 p.m. at Orofun area in Ibeju Lekki, near Lagos.

He alleged that the accused had unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. Uwadione said the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

‘Madwoman’ says sex partners own human parts found with her (Punch)

A woman alleged to be mentally deranged, Folake Falade, has denied knowing anything about human parts found in her possession in Aiyetoro, Cele-Nizer, on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

The 40-year-old said the body parts found with her on Monday, August 27, belonged to men who usually had sex with her in a tunnel where she lived.

There had been turmoil in the community after some residents allegedly spotted the suspect, who was widely believed to be mad, making telephone calls.

A mob was said to have gathered and would have lynched her but for the intervention of some officials of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps and policemen from the Ijanikin division.

The police were said to have recovered a skull, some decomposing human parts, photos, foot wares, among others, from the tunnel. Read more

Cultists narrate how they killed 11 in Lagos

Three members of the Black Axe confraternity, also known as Aye, terrorising residents of Ijanikin, Iyano-Ishashi and Ojo areas of Lagos State, have been arrested by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Tactical Squad, STS, for killing no fewer than 11 persons in the last two years.

Vanguard gathered that the suspects, identified as Nasiru Bashiru, Kenneth Dike and Power Michael, were rounded up when they hacked a middle-aged man, identified as Walter, to death at the entrance of a popular hotel at Iyano-Sashi area of the state on July 21.

Police sources said the suspects and members of their cult, were arrested following a petition written to Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.

It was learned that the IGP, acting on the petition, deployed a crack team of operatives of STS, led by an Inspector, Akan Smith, and the suspects were trailed to their hideout and arrested. Read more

Masquerade, herbalist held over sergeant’s death (Guardian)

A 52-year-old head of a local masquerade group, Igunuko, based at Ifako-Ijaiye area of Lagos State, Ariyo Elegbede, is among 10 suspects arrested over the death of one Sergeant Collins Esiabor.

Esiabor was allegedly lynched on August 29, at Ifako Ijaiye by suspected members of a secret cult gang, over an ‘unprovoked’ reason. One 82-year-old herbalist, Babatunde Rufai, who treats gunshot victims, is also among those arrested.

While the leader of the Igunuko was arrested for allegedly participating in the actual lynching of the policeman, the herbalist was said to have administered first aid to a member of the gang, who mistakenly shot himself on the leg with a police rifle. Read more

Unidentified youth dies moments after taking Indian hemp, tramadol (Nation)

An unidentified youth in Oko Oba, Agege,Lagos,died penultimate Tuesday shortly after taking Indian hemp and tramadol.

Witnesses said the incident happened at the Abattoir end of Oko Oba.

It was learnt that the deceased smoked Indian hemp with some of his friends, following which he also took tramadol.

A source who asked not to be named disclosed that ‘’the deceased then sat down at a corner where he took tramadol.’’

He was said to have palpitated severally after taking the combined hard drugs leading to his death moments later.

The source added: ‘’ When he started behaving funny, we thought he was just acting clownishly until he palpitated for some minutes and subsequently became weak. Read more
