390 more catch COVID-19, taking Nigeria’s total caseload to 69,645

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 390 new cases of COVID-19 Monday.

In a Twitter update via its verified handle, the government agency said there are now 69,645 confirmed cases of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus in Nigeria.

A total number of 64,947 people it said, have so far been discharged from hospital, while the number of deaths so far is 1,181.

As of Monday, there were more than 67.5 million cases of COVID-19 around the world, with more than 43.4 million of those considered recovered or resolved, according to a tracking tool maintained by Johns Hopkins University. The global death toll stood at more than 1.5 million.

Meanwhile, South Africa remained the hardest-hit nation in Africa, with more than 814,000 cases of COVID-19 and 22,000 deaths.

According to the CBC, John Nkengasong, head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, recently expressed concern about the potential impacts of holiday travel on health-care systems across the continent.

“During the holiday season, there will be a tendency for large movement from capital cities to villages, remote areas, for people to connect with families,” he told a news conference from Ethiopia. “That might drive the pandemic.”
