417 new cases take Nigeria’s confirmed COVID-19 infections to 49,485

Just about 10 days before Nigeria’s airports reopen for international flights on August 29, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed a total number of 417 new COVID-19 coronavirus cases in the country.

The aviation minister made the announcement after more than five months of closure to all but essential travel.

Meanwhile, NCDC’s latest tally for Nigeria announced via its Twitter handle Monday night, brings the total for Nigeria to 49,485 with 36,834 people so far discharged and 977 deaths.

As of August 17, the confirmed coronavirus death toll on the African continent stood at 25,659. There are 1,120,768 confirmed infections and 836,216 recoveries, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Worldwide, the number of those diagnosed with COVID-19 has exceeded 21 million. According to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, the global total of confirmed cases now exceeds 21.8 million, and more than 772,000 people have died, while 13.8 million people have recovered from the disease.
