453 new Nigerian COVID-19 cases, as numbers rise to 46,140

Nigeria recorded 453 new COVID-19 cases Saturday, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). Nigeria’s confirmed coronavirus infections now stand at 46,140.

The NCDC made the announcement via its twitter handle, adding that 942 people have so far died from the virus in the country, while it put the number of recoveries at 33,044.

Aljazeera reports that as of August 7, the confirmed coronavirus death toll on the African continent stood at 22,491, with deaths including the former president of the Republic of the Congo, Jacques Joachim Yhombi-Opango, and Somalia’s former Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein.

It adds that there are 1,022,084 confirmed infections and 705,016 recoveries, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

At least 19.48 million people around the world have been diagnosed with COVID-19, while the global death toll crossed 723,000. More than 11.8 million have recovered..
