5 police officers killed, 11 injured in Kano auto crash (Vanguard)

At least five police officers attached to the Kano State Police Command have been confirmed killed in a ghastly auto accident along the Kano-Zaria highway.

The command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police, SP, Abdullahi Haruna, who confirmed this to newsmen in the state, said the incident which occurred in the wee hours, yesterday, also left 11 others sustaining different degrees of injuries.

Haruna said the incident happened around Karfi Village, Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, while the officers were on their way back to Kano from an official assignment. Read more 

Families of slain police officers got N15.6b in one year – IGP (DailyTrust)

A total of N15,606,138,376 has been disbursed to 5,225 family members and next of kin of slain police officers between 2023 and 2024, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has said.

Giving the breakdown at Force Headquarters, Abuja, he said a total of N9,851,847,889.88 was paid to 3,077 families and next of kin on six different occasions between July 2023 and June 2024.

He added that the force was presenting cheques totaling 5,754,290,486 Naira, 38 Kobo in September to the families of deceased police officers who had selflessly given their lives in service of our great nation, Nigeria. Read more

El-Rufai sued N2.3b for alleged breach of rights (Vangaurd)

Adara Elders in Southern Kaduna have dragged ex-Governor Nasiru El-Rufa’i to Court over a breach of their fundamental human rights, unlawful imprisonment and harassment.

The elders told a Federal High Court Kaduna that they were detained, unjustly imprisoned and later released by the former Governor Nasir Ahmed El-Rufa’i-led administration in 2019.

The claimants led by former Chairman of the Adara Development Association (ADA), Aweni Dio Maisamari are demanding 2.3 Billion naira in damages, ranging from arbitrary arrest, general exemplary damages and special damages, given the quantum of rights that were violated. Read more

Women Connect Network, has launched an initiative aimed to provide free sanitary pads to underprivileged girls in the society.

The initiative which tagged,“pad a girl initiative’’ also hoped to provide menstrual health awareness to adolescent girls in Nigeria.

Speaking at the launch which was held in Agege, Lagos, founder of Women Connect Network, Oyinlola Sale, regretted that most underprivileged girls in the society do not have access to sanitary pads during their menstrual periods due to poverty. Read more 

Justice Nyako to step down from Nnamdi Kanu’s trial (Channels)

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court Abuja has said she is going to “recuse” herself from Nnamdi Kanu’s case. 

She decided after Kanu asked her to do so, alleging that she had refused to obey the Supreme Court’s order.

Minister commends Benue for achieving open-defecation-free status in 2 LGs (Punch)

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof Joseph Utsev, has applauded Ado and Ohimini Local Government Areas of Benue State for achieving Open-Defecation Free status.

Utsev, who was represented by the Director of Water Quality Control and Sanitation at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, Elizabeth Ugoh, made this announcement during a commemoration ceremony in Otukpo, Benue State, on Tuesday.

Last Thursday, the minister disclosed that the National Task Group on Sanitation declared eight additional LGAs ODF. Read more

UNICEF donates 3.9m doses of vaccines to Kano (Dailytrust)

The United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) has donated 3,905,100 doses of vaccines to the Kano State Government to be distributed to all the health facilities across the 484 wards in the 44 local government areas of the state.

The Fund also donated fast cold chain equipment comprising 39 cold boxes, 1,420 vaccine carriers, 1,208 icepacks of 0.6 size and 1,704 icepacks of 0.3 size.

The Chief of UNICEF Kano Field Office, Mr. Rahama Rihood Mohammed Farah at the handover of the equipment at Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital Kano, on Tuesday, said UNICEF was committed to supporting Nigeria’s healthcare system and reducing child mortality by ensuring access to essential vaccines and healthcare services. Sudan’s ousted ex-leader Omar al-Bashir moved to Merowe hospital, along with former officials (AfricaNews)

Sudan’s ex-leader Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted form power several years ago, has been moved from a jail north of Omdurman to Merowe hospital, which is situated some 450 kilometres away from the capital Khartoum.

His legal team requested for the 80 year old to be transferred due to medical reasons, as al-Bashir required treatments that were not available at the Wadi Seedna military base where he was previously detained. Two of his former staff were moved with him – the former defence minister and former sports minister.

Sudan has pledged to hand al-Bashir over to the International Criminal Court, which has issued an arrest warrant for him. Al-Bashir is wanted by the court on charges of genocide and war crimes relating to the conflict in Darfur, which erupted in 2003. Read more

Uefa has reopened the bidding for stadiums to host the 2027 Champions League final, after the match was stripped from Milan.

The San Siro was to be the venue for the showcase final but, after Milan officials failed to assure Uefa that planned redevelopment work would not hamper the event, European football’s governing body opted to take it away from them.

AC Milan and Inter Milan are considering building a new stadium in the San Siro area. Read more

Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote has expressed regret over his decision not to buy Premier League club Arsenal for $2 billion.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV in New York on Monday, Dangote acknowledged that the “time has passed” for him to buy Arsenal, saying that the club is now valued at approximately $4bn.
