German official says nuclear would do little to solve gas issue (Aljazeera)

Germany’s vice-chancellor has defended the government’s commitment to ending the use of nuclear power at the end of this year, amid fears that Russia may halt natural gas supplies entirely.

Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck, who is also the economy and climate minister and is responsible for energy, argued that keeping the few remaining reactors running would do little to address the problems caused by a possible natural gas shortfall.

“Nuclear power doesn’t help us there at all,” Habeck said at a news conference in Vienna on Tuesday. “We have a heating problem or an industry problem, but not an electricity problem – at least not generally throughout the country.”

The main gas pipeline from Russia to Germany shut down for annual maintenance on Monday, as Berlin grew concerned that Moscow may not resume the flow of gas as scheduled. Read more

No easing up for Germany despite clinching Euro 2022 group (Independent)

Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg has no intentions of letting her side ease up after another impressive display saw them beat Spain 2-0 to secure a quarter-final place as Group B winners.

Voss-Tecklenburg’s well-drilled team had swept past Denmark 4-0 in their opening fixture and proved too strong for a Spanish side looking to build their own momentum having comfortably seen off Finland.

It took Germany just three minutes to open the scoring at the Brentford Community Stadium, as Klara Buhl capitalised on a poor clearance from Spain goalkeeper Sandra Panos, and captain Alexandra Popp headed in a second before the break.

Germany finished their group schedule against Finland in Milton Keynes on Saturday, and will then play Norway or Austria in the quarter-finals. Read more

Bryson DeChambeau, Bridgestone part ways after major champion joins LIV Golf (USAToday)

Bryson DeChambeau originally signed with Bridgestone in 2016 after he turned professional and re-signed his endorsement deal to use the company’s golf balls in 2020, but a few weeks after DeChambeau’s decision to join the LIV Golf Invitational Series, a direct competitor to the PGA Tour, the player and brand have decided to split.

“The PGA Tour is an extremely important part of professional golf, and Bridgestone has a sports marketing relationship with this highly visible series of tournaments,” Bridgestone said in a statement. “In considering that Bryson DeChambeau will no longer be participating in these events, Bridgestone and Bryson have agreed to end their brand ambassador partnership.”

DeChambeau isn’t the first player to lose a sponsorship over the Saudi-backed golf league. Phil Mickelson and Callaway Golf agreed to pause their relationship in February, Lee Westwood no longer has a deal with UPS and Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell’s deals with Mastercard have been paused after their move to the breakaway tour.

Former F1 race director Michael Masi departs FIA

(F1i)

The FIA has announced that former F1 race director Michael Masi has permanently left motorsport’s governing body.

After the FIA confirmed Masi’s ousting ahead of the launch of the 2022 F1 season in the wake of his mishandling of Formula 1’s season finale in Abu Dhabi, the Australian was placed on the sidelines but remained employed by the institution.

In May, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem alluded to the possibility of Masi being attributed new responsibilities with the governing body.

But with no news forthcoming and Masi returning to his homeland, the consensus in the paddock was that F1’s former chief steward would eventually depart the FIA. That speculation has now become fact. Read more

John McEnroe launches fierce Novak Djokovic defence amid criticism of Wimbledon champion

(Mirror)

John McEnroe has launched a staunch defence of Novak Djokovic following his latest triumph at Wimbledon. The Serbian overcame the challenge of Nick Kyrgios to win for the seventh time on Centre Court and collected his 21st Grand Slam title in the process.

The 35-year-old has not always received the best reception from fans over the years, especially when competing against the likes of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. In an interview with GQ, the American mentioned how Daniil Medvedev handled the US Open crowds when they booed him in 2019, and the audiences who jeered him in Australia earlier this year.

The Russian embraced the responses and handled them relatively well, whereas Djokovic feels aggrieved that he does not receive the same level of love as his fellow greats of the game. McEnroe leapt to his defence and criticised those who boo the reigning Wimbledon champion or perhaps do not give him the respect he deserves.

“That was a gutsy thing to do because you don’t want everyone in the New York audience booing against you. But he (Medvedev) did a fantastic job, and then he won the crowd over in the finals, through his effort, which is fantastic,” McEnroe said. “And then they loved him, pretty much, last year. Now it’s bothering him, which is more normal. It’s catching up to him. There’s only so long you can go that way. Read more
