594 more people infected with COVID-19 in Nigeria

At least 594 more people have been infected by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Nigeria

bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the country to 22,614.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) made this known Thursday night via tweet.

According to the NCDC, 22,614 cases have so far been confirmed, 7,822 cases have been discharged and 549 deaths have been recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Worldwide, more than 9.4 million people have been confirmed infected, and nearly a half-million have died, according to the Johns Hopkins count. Experts say the true infection numbers are much higher, in part because of limited testing.

World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expects the number of global cases to hit 10 million and the death toll from the disease to reach 500,000 by next week.

Speaking Thursday during a video conference with European Parliament members, Ghebreyesus said that although the crisis has improved across Europe, “globally, it’s still getting worse.”
