6 Swiss cops face manslaughter charges over death of Nigerian (Punch)
Six Swiss police officers on Monday appeared in court over the death of a Nigerian man who had a fatal heart attack after he was pinned down during an arrest in 2018.
According to the Independent UK, the white officers were accused of “homicide through negligence” in relation to the death of the 39-year-old Nigerian man, Mike Ben Peter, in Lausanne in 2018.
The accused have all pleaded not guilty stating that other factors caused his death. Read more
Nigeria’s democracy benefits only few — ASUU President (Tribune)
President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, has faulted democracy being practised in Nigeria, saying the system only benefits few people who are, or have been, at the corridors of political power and their cronies.
He said it is disheartening that the situation has remained the same or even worse from one administration to another in the last unbroken 24 years of democratic governance in Nigeria.
He lamented the situation more so that the poor masses, according to him, still hero-worship the political leaders, who impoverished them rather than to hold them accountable for their actions and inactions including their campaign promises. Read more
Customs seizes over 100 vehicles (Sun)
In strict enforcement of its anti-smuggling mandate, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized over 100 assorted vehicles from individuals and corporations who evaded duties or paid inappropriate charges on them. The brand of vehicles include; Toyota Hilux, Toyota Land Cruiser, Lexus and other Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and sedans.
To this end, the Service has called on relevant stakeholders to synergise with its officers and men to effectively suppress the smuggling of vehicles into Nigeria.
It said the development has become a worrisome type of economic sabotage, which should not be allowed to flourish. Read more

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has urged President Bola Tinubu to fulfill the dreams of a prosperous country to Nigerians on the occasion of the country’s Democracy Day celebration.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has given full backing to the move by the Lagos State House of Assembly to initiate Law to protect the state’s heritage.

Federal Govt alerts public as Anthrax outbreak hits Ghana (Leadership)
The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, on Monday, alerted the general public on precautions as Northern Ghana, a border to Burkina Faso and Togo, recorded an outbreak of Anthrax disease.
Anthrax is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis. It primarily affects animals, particularly livestock and can be transmitted to humans through contact with infected animals or their products, such as wool, hides, milk meat or through the inhalation of Anthrax spores.
Although Anthrax is not contagious, it can be acquired by inhaling or ingesting spores of the bacteria or through skin contact with contaminated soil or materials. Read more

Outgoing Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, Hon Nnolim Nnaji, on Sunday, denied the allegation leveled against him by the immediate past Minister of Aviation that he demanded five percent of the equity in the controversial Nigeria Air project.
Hon Nnaji, in response to the Nigerian Tribune inquiry on the allegation, however, urged the Minister to give an account of his stewardship, especially on the failed National Carrier – Nigeria Air project.

Annecy: Miles Morales has a panic attack in Sony’s ‘‘Spider-Verse’’ short (THR)
Sony Pictures Animation revealed a different side to Miles Morales, the hero of its blockbuster Spider-Verse franchise, in a short film The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, which got its world premiere at the Annecy animation film festival on Monday.
The short shows Miles/Spider-Man battling with mental health issues, as the teen web-slinger feels overwhelmed with school, upcoming exams and relationship drama. In the short, Miles’ anxieties take the form of a dark figure representing his alter ego and an imagined invasion of spiders into his bedroom. But by reaching out for help from his father, Jefferson “Jeff” Morales, Miles is able to conquer his inner demons.
The short was shown at the Annecy festival Monday as part of a session on Sony Pictures Animation and Sony Pictures Imageworks’ joint mentorship program LENS (Leading and Empowering New Storytellers), which aims to develop new animation talents from underrepresented groups. Read more

JP Morgan has reached an agreement in principle to settle a lawsuit brought on behalf of alleged victims of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Attorneys for the bank said it was “in the best interests of all parties, especially the survivors who were the victims of Epstein’s terrible abuse”.

Pep Guardiola is firmly minded to leave Manchester City in two years when his contract expires. The manager, fresh from leading City to the treble, has all but decided that he will depart in summer 2025 and end his tenure after nine years.
Guardiola signed a new deal in November, a decision that had been in the balance and which his inner circle were unsure would happen. When the Catalan arrived at City in summer 2016 there was a strong expectation that he would not extend his stay beyond the three-year term he agreed then.
Before City, Guardiola coached Barcelona and Bayern Munich and it had been thought that after working in England he would want to coach a club in Italy to achieve an ambition to manage in Europe’s four premier domestic competitions.
