Nigeria recorded 626 fresh COVID-19 cases on Thursday bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the country to 27, 110.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) made this known via tweet Thursday night.

The NCDC update listed 10,801 people as having been discharged and 616 deaths.

Giving a breakdown of the new cases, it said they were recorded in 20 states with Lagos State having the highest number of fresh infections for the day – 193, followed by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with 85 cases and Oyo State having 41 persons infected.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said more than 6,000 health workers have been infected with the coronavirus in 38 countries across its Africa region since the pandemic began.

The WHO’s 47-country Africa region has the most severe health workforce shortage in the world, and concerns about adequate personal protective gear against the coronavirus are widespread.

At least 10.8 million people around the world have been diagnosed with the coronavirus, over 5.7 million have recovered, and more than 520,000 have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.
