Aretha Franklin estate says $7.8 million IRS bill is paid, leaving door open to payments to singer’s sons (USAToday)

Aretha Franklin’s long-standing $7.8 million debt to the Internal Revenue Service has been paid in full, her estate says in a new court filing.

It could open the door for Franklin’s four sons to finally take the driver’s seat in her post-death affairs and fully benefit from revenues flowing into her estate — which would mean millions of dollars, at last, getting into their hands.

The late Queen of Soul’s tax burden had been an immovable hurdle as her heirs sorted out other estate matters — sometimes combatively — in Oakland County Probate Court following her 2018 death.

As the mightiest creditor in the picture, the IRS held sway, and its debt demands prevented the sons from receiving money, even while the late star’s music and movie projects generated big revenue in her name. Read more

EE to block mobile music piracy sites and apps (NME)

It’s been announced that EE will become the first mobile provider in the UK to block mobile music piracy sites and apps.

Back in 2012, the BPI (British Phonographic Institute) successfully petitioned the courts to block file-sharing site The Pirate Bay, with home broadband providers ordered to ban an additional 70 sites that allowed people to download music illegally.

And today (July 12) EE has decided to extend that ban from fixed line broadband networks to include its mobile networks as well.

Speaking to the BBC, an EE spokesperson said: “Historically the majority of piracy took place on fixed line networks, but as network speeds increase and content file sizes for music decreases, mobile networks are seeing a rise in piracy. EE believes in supporting content creators by combating piracy across both our mobile and fixed networks.” Read more

Spotify acquires Heardle, the Wordle-Inspired viral music trivia game (Variety)

Spotify is adding buzzy music game Heardle to its arsenal — acquiring the daily name-that-tune website patterned on the massively popular Wordle game.

Financial terms of the deal aren’t being disclosed.

Heardle popped up in February 2022, based on the format pioneered by Wordle, which was itself bought by the New York Times for more than $1 million. In Heardle, players try to guess a song as quickly as possible based on its opening notes; they get six tries, getting a few more seconds of music with each attempt. Like Wordle, Heardle then lets users share their results for bragging rights. (Actually, Heardle’s lineage goes back to the early 1950s, when “Name That Tune” debuted first on radio and then as a TV series on CBS.)

According to Spotify’s blog post announcing the deal, “We see Heardle as more than a trivia game: It’s also a tool for musical discovery. Playing Heardle might just help you to rediscover old tracks you may have thought you’d forgotten, discover amazing new artists, or finally put a title to that wordless melody you’ve had caught in your head forever.” Read more

Mali arrests nearly 50 soldiers from Ivory Coast (ABC)

Malian authorities arrested nearly 50 soldiers from Ivory Coast who came to Mali to work for a contracting company of the United Nations mission in Mali. The government made the announcement Monday calling the Ivorian soldiers “mercenaries,” in a move that could raise tensions between the two West African countries.

Two aircraft arrived at Mali’s international airport Sunday with the 49 soldiers “with their weapons and ammunition of war, as well as other military equipment,” said Malian government spokesman Col. Abdoulaye Maiga. They “were illegally on the national territory of Mali,” and the transitional government considers them mercenaries, he added.

U.N. mission spokesman Olivier Salgado said these Ivorian soldiers “are not part of one of the MINUSMA contingents, but have been deployed for several years in Mali as part of logistical support on behalf of one of our contingents.” He said that their arrival as relief would have been communicated beforehand to the national authorities. They are working for a German company that is contracted by the U.N. mission known as the Sahelian Aviation Services.

Government spokesman Maiga said they would put an end to the protection activity of the Sahelian Aviation Services by foreign forces and demand their departure from Malian territory. The government invited “the airline “ Sahelian Aviation Services “to henceforth entrust its security to the Malian defense and security forces,” he said. Read more

Orlando Magic shut Paolo Banchero down for remainder of 2022 NBA summer league (ABC)

The No. 1 pick is getting the rest of summer league off, after averaging 20 points, six assists and five rebounds in his two games in Las Vegas. The Magic made the decision so they could

“I want to give these other guys an opportunity to play, to kind of be able to show what they’re capable of doing,” Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said. “That’s the point of summer league, you know, give them a chance … an opportunity for these other guys to see what they’re capable of doing. And we’ve seen what Paolo was capable of doing.”

The Magic are also expected to give Admiral Schofield and R.J. Hampton the remainder of summer league off, which opens up even more minutes for players to get opportunities in Las Vegas. Mosley said Banchero got all he needed out of the summer experience. Read more
