70-year-old Grandpa arrested as NDLEA intercepts N2.1b codeine, loud consignments (Channels)

A 70-year-old grandfather has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) with 57.2kg of cannabis in Nasarawa State.

Also arrested were two suspects with 426kg of cannabis in Ekiti State, NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

This is as the anti-narcotics agency seized codeine-based syrup and Loud, a synthetic cannabis strain worth over N2.1 billion at the Port Harcourt seaports and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. Read more

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero; has said that the union is fighting for a living wage for the Nigerian workers and not starvation wage.

Ajaero disclosed this at a meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly, SGF, Ministers and NLC leadership in Abuja.

The meeting was initiated by the national Assembly to avert the planed nationwide strike that will commence tomorrow. Read more

Minimum Wage: Strike begins as N/Assembly’s intervention fails (DailyTrust)

The organised labour yesterday insisted that its indefinite strike would begin today as planned following the federal government’s refusal to increase the minimum wage above N60,000.

Labour, which is demanding N494,000, said this in Abuja last night after a three-hour meeting with the National Assembly leadership and top officials of the Executive arm of government.

The president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Festus Osifo, led members of their national executives to the meeting, which was presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen. Prolonged Marine Bridge closure, slowing goods evacuation-l — Apapa Port Operators (Tribune)

Operators at the Lagos Ports have lamented that the prolonged closure of a section of the outbound lane of Marine Bridge in Apapa, Lagos is slowing down the evacuation of goods cleared from the Lagos Port Complex in Apapa.

Speaking with newsmen at the weekend, Chairman of the Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN), Princess Vicky Haastrup appealed to the Federal Ministry of Works to speed up ongoing repairs on the bridge to ensure its prompt reopening.

The STOAN Chairman expressed concerns about the frequent partial closure of the busy bridge.

Princess Haastrup said the bridge has experienced prolonged partial and intermittent closures over the past two years without noticeable appreciable progress of the repair work being done. Read more

Bauchi commissioner dies in car accident (Nation)

The Bauchi state commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Ahmed Aliyu Jalam, has lost his life in a car accident. 

The late commissioner met his death while traveling to his hometown in Jalam, Dambam local government area of the state.

INEC unveils book to enhance electoral process (Leadership)

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has said Nigeria must reflect on its electoral past to ensure successful and inclusive future elections.

South Africa’s African National Congress party will not consider any demands from possible coalition partners that President Cyril Ramaphosa step down, a top official said Sunday, as the ANC attempted to present a united front after a stinging election result ended its 30-year majority.

As South Africa heads for a series of complex talks to form a national coalition government for the first time and establish stability, ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said Ramaphosa would remain as party leader and any demands from others that he resign for talks to go ahead was “a no-go area.”

South Korea vows ‘‘unbearable’’ retaliation against North over rubbish balloons (IrishExaminer)

South Korea said on Sunday that it will soon take “unbearable” retaliatory steps against North Korea over its launch of rubbish-carrying balloons across the border and other provocations.

In the past week, North Korea has floated hundreds of huge balloons to dump rubbish on South Korea, simulated nuclear strikes against its neighbour and allegedly jammed GPS navigation signals in the South in an escalation of animosities between the rivals.

Ex-Falcons player turned man seeks N69m to become father (Punch)

Former Super Falcons player Iyabo Abade, now a man and renamed James Johnson, has begged the Nigeria Football Federation to assist him with the payment of N69.7m to facilitate a corrective surgery that will enable him bear children.

Johnson, a confirmed hermaphrodite, was a member of the Falcons from 1997 to 2000 and successfully underwent a sex change operation in the United States in 2004 courtesy of then Minister, Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

Tsitsipas overcomes slow start to beat Arnaldi in Roland-Garros 4th round (TennisMajors) 

Stefanos Tsitsipas was on the brink of a two-set deficit but stormed back to beat Matteo Arnaldi 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at Roland-Garros, securing a spot in the quarter-finals. Tsitsipas advanced after three hours and 11 minutes, setting up a showdown with Carlos Alcaraz.

Coming off a third-round upset of Andrey Rublev, Arnaldi maintained momentum through almost two whole sets against Tsitsipas. The 35th-ranked Italian rolled through the opening frame of play before building a 5-3 advantage in the second. He had a total of four set points across two different games — three with Tsitsipas serving at 3-5 and one on his own serve at 5-4.

However, Arnaldi could not convert and after that the match shifted in a major way. Tsitsipas broke back for 5-5, eventually forced a tiebreak and then took it seven points to four. Read more
