72.6% of foreign-trained doctors failed assessment test-MDCN (Sun)

Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), on Wednesday, inducted new 205 foreign-trained medical doctors and dentists who were successful in the assessment test conducted by the Council recently.

The induction exercise which was conducted at MDCN headquarters in Abuja, on Wednesday, witnessed the participation of family and friends of the new doctors, as well as government officials including the Minister of State for Health, Tunji Alausa; former Ministers of Health and FCT, Prof. Isaac Adewole and Adamu Aliero, respectively, among several others.

MDCN Registrar, Dr. Tajudeeen Sanusi, told journalists after the induction ceremony that over 700 foreign-trained doctors mostly from Ukraine schools participated in the assessment test, out of which 495 (72.6%) failed the assessment examination. Read more 

FG issues 2-week timeline for passport processing, clears over 204,000 backlog (Vanguard)

The Federal Government has announced a two-week timeline for the processing of passport applications, saying the era of Nigerians waiting for months to get their international passports is over.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja at a media parley to review his directive to the Nigeria Immigration Service NIS to clear over 204,000 backlog of passport applications.

The minister who apologized profusely to Nigerians that clearance of the backlog had spilled into three weeks as opposed to the two weeks deadline he gave, however praised officers and men of the for working day and night including weekends and public holidays to meet with his directive. MohBad: Police declare singer Primeboy wanted (Leadership)

The Lagos State Police Command has declared Owodunni Ibrahim, a.k.a Primeboy, wanted over the circumstances surrounding the death of another singer, Oladimeji IleriOluwa, a.k.a MohBad.

The Police said the decision followed Primeboy’s failure to honour the police invitation.

According to a statement by the Police Command’s spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, on Wednesday, Police sent an invitation to Primeboy since the commencement of investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of Mohbad but he declined the invitation. Read more

Prominent socialite in Benin City sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for human trafficking (Guardian)

A popular socialite in Benin City, Edo State, Felicia Osaigbovo, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined N24 million for human trafficking.

Osaigbovo was convicted by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

She was sentenced by Honourable Justice Geraldine Imadegbelo of the High Court, Criminal Division, Benin City. Read more 

Residents knock Lagos commercial drivers over indiscriminate parking (Punch)

Residents and motorists plying Bolade Road in the Oshodi Isolo Local Government Area of Lagos State have bemoaned the traffic jam being caused by the indiscriminate parking of commercial buses on the road connecting Ilupeju and Mushin.

Our correspondent who visited the area on Tuesday noticed how the commercial vehicles were obstructing the road.

A motorist, Musa Aliyu, regretted that the commercial drivers abandon bus stops and park indiscriminately on the road. Read more 

Gunmen abduct Katsina university students (DailyTrust)

Some armed men suspected to be bandits have invaded the student dormitories of the Federal University in Dutsinma (FUDMA), Katsina State, abducting five female students.

Daily Trust gathered that the incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday, at the students’ off-campus dormitories behind Mariamoh Ajiri school, close to Wednesday Market in Dutsinma.

“Five of them (the students) were kidnapped, they are from Kano and Nasarawa states and two of them are final year students,” one of the students at the university told our reporter on the phone. Read more

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has set up an inter-ministerial committee that will look into the construction of an international airport in the state.

Inaugurating the committee in the Osun State governor’s office in Osogbo, the state capital on Tuesday, Adeleke noted that Osun is the only state in South-West Nigeria without an airport.

He said that the committee will initiate, develop and actualise the plan towards executing the airport project. Read more

3 scientists win Nobel Prize in physics for looking at electrons in atoms during split seconds (France24)

Three scientists won the Nobel Prize in physics on Tuesday for studying how electrons zip around the atom during in the tiniest fractions of seconds, a field that could one day lead to better electronics or disease diagnoses.

The award went to Pierre Agostini, Hungarian-born Ferenc Krausz and French-born Anne L’Huillier for their work with the tiny part of each atom that races around the center and that is fundamental to virtually everything: chemistry, physics, our bodies and our gadgets.

Electrons move around so fast that they have been out of reach of human efforts to isolate them, but by looking at the tiniest fraction of a second possible, scientists now have a “blurry” glimpse of them and that opens up whole new sciences, experts said. Read more

Uefa said on Wednesday that Turkey, who had expressed an interest in hosting the tournament, has now withdrawn its bid, leaving a clear run for the UK and Ireland offer.

The news had been expected, with the UK and Ireland the favourite for 2028 ever since the English Football Association signalled it would not bid to host the men’s Fifa World Cup in 2030. Uefa had wanted a mature football market to host the 2028 tournament, as it seeks to recoup revenues lost from the Covid-disrupted tournament of 2021. Read more
