9 arrested for open defecation in Lagos (Channels)

A total of nine individuals have been arrested for engaging in open defecation in the Berger area of the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a post on X.com on Saturday, said they were arrested on Friday by Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps.

He wrote, “Nine individuals were arrested for open urination and defecation at Berger last night.” Read more

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has said it recorded at least 24, 955 gender-based sexual violence in the state between 2019 till date.

The state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN and Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, revealed this at a media parley to commemorate the domestic and sexual violence awareness month and award night, held at Alausa, Ikeja.

They disclosed that the 2024 programme is themed: ‘Not On My Watch!’According to them, they are determined to curb the worrisome rising cases of sexual violence, adding that the state government has unveiled plans to embark on massive advocacy campaigns across all the local government areas of the state. Workers to wait long for new minimum wage payment (Leadership)

One month after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the N70,000 new National Minimum Wage Act, most states of the federation are yet to take serious measures to implement the law.

Except for Adamawa State, which has implemented the law by paying its workers the national wage this month, the best a few other states have done is to set up minimum wage implementation committees, whose reports are being awaited.

This situation is further compounded by the federal authorities’ failure to develop a consequential adjustment template on which the new wage would be computed for full-scale implementation. Read more

The number of monkeypox (mpox) cases in Nigeria has reached 48, with the virus now detected in Abuja and 20 other states, according to the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). Despite the rising cases, no deaths have been reported.

On August 27, Nigeria received 10,000 vaccine doses from the United States to aid in controlling the outbreak. To further prevent the virus’s spread, a health declaration form for international travelers has been introduced.

18-year age limit for NECO, WASSCE, varsities: Furore over new policy (Sun)

The Federal Government’s announcement to raise the university admission age limit from 16 to 18 years has sparked intense debate among educators, parents, students, lawyers and other stakeholders in the country.

Minister of Education, Prof. Tahiru Mamman, who made the announcement, argues that this change is in line with the 6-3-3-4 education system, which provides for six years of primary school, three years of junior secondary school, three years of senior secondary education, and four years of tertiary education.

It was revealed that one of the advantages of raising the admission age limit to 18 is that it allows students to mature mentally and emotionally before entering the university. Read more

Bisi Akande, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at the University of Ibadan (UI), has pledged to donate his allowances to support science scholarships for deserving students.

In a memorandum addressed to Ganiyu Saliu, the university’s registrar and secretary to the governing council, Akande expressed that his appointment is a national call to service, for which he does not intend to receive any personal remuneration.

“I consider my appointment as the Pro-Chancellor and as the Chairman of Council for the University of Ibadan as a national call to service from which I do not intend to earn any remuneration,” Akande stated. Read more

She is teaching a beatmaking class to five young women, each of them working intently on beats of their own on the computers in front of them.

Thiam is a beatmaker, and one of only a few women in Senegal who call themselves such. Her stage name is “Myamy the Ay Girl,” a mix of English and Wolof that means “the girl who can”. Read more

Tony McCarroll, the former Oasis drummer who sued the Gallagher brothers after he was sacked from the band in 1995, has spoken out about the band’s reunion tour for the first time.

In a new interview, the drummer, who is often dubbed the “forgotten man of Oasis”, spoke about Noel and Liam Gallagher’s reunion tour, which will see the band perform a run of 14 shows in the UK and Ireland next summer for the first time since they broke up in 2009.

7 US personnel injured in Iraq raid that killed 15 ISIS members: Officials (ABC)

United States and Iraqi military forces conducted a raid in western Iraq that targeted ISIS leaders and killed 15 ISIS militants, U.S. Central Command said in a statement.

Seven U.S. military service members who participated in the early-hour raid Thursday morning were wounded or sustained injuries in the larger operation, according to a defense official who said all the service members were in stable condition.

“U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces and Iraqi Security Forces conducted a partnered raid in Western Iraq in the early hours of Aug. 29, resulting in the death of 15 ISIS operatives,” a statement from U.S. Central Command issued late Friday said. Read more

An artist is holding a free exhibition to showcase her work about a flooding that left her unable to paint for three years.

Jayne Gaze, who lived in Spain for nearly a decade, said her life changed in 2019 after a flood in that country destroyed all of her artwork and ruined her art studio.

Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc will face no further action for the impeding incident involving Daniel Ricciardo at the Italian Grand Prix.
