A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, on Monday, convicted and sentenced a man, Olayemi Ayomide, to 10 years imprisonment for robbing a National Youth Service Corps member, Adekanmbi Olubusayo, an artisan, Hunwanu Adebayo, of their belongings.
Justice Modupe Nicol-Clay, sentenced him, following a plea bargain entered by the convict.
When the amended charge was read to Ayomide, he pleaded guilty and the judge handed down the verdict based on the recommended term of 10 years imprisonment for the two counts of the offences of attempting to steal.
In her judgment, the judge held that the court was satisfied that the convict entered into the plea bargain agreement willingly and understood the implication of pleading guilty.
She said, “This court finds the agreed punishment of 10 years to be adequate given the convict’s admission of guilt and show of remorse.
“The convict, Olayemi Ayomide, is hereby convicted for the offence of attempt to commit felony and stealing, and he is hereby sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, to commence from the date of his remand being January 3, 2019.”
The Lagos State Government had accused the convict of robbing the victim of his four Automated Teller Machine cards, NYSC Identification card, a driving licence, Samsung C5 gold mobile phone, and the sum of N2,050, cash.
The state prosecution counsel, Mrs Titilayo Olanrewaju–Daud, told the court that Ayomide committed the offences on December 31, 2018.
She said the incident took place at about 12 pm, around the Surulere/Ojuelegba area of Lagos.
According to the prosecutor, the offences committed contravened Sections, 76 (6) of the Administration of Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011, and Sections 406 (1) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.The convict was first arraigned on November 14, 2019, and he pleaded not guilty to three counts earlier preferred against him.
