Vigilante flees after shooting hairdresser dead in Lagos (Punch)
A member of the Onyabo Vigilante Group in Ogijo, identified simply as Shina, is on the run after allegedly shooting to death a hairdresser, Aishat Adedimeji, in Odogunyan, Ikorodu North Local Council Development Area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Aishat’s lover, Rasheed Owamoyo, and his club members had gone to the Ola Guest House on Ita Oloja Street, Odogunyan, on Sunday when she decided to join them.
After enjoying themselves at the guest house, the club members and Aishat were said to have come out to where their vehicles were parked in front of the guest house when Shina reportedly accosted them around 7pm and allegedly shot the hairdresser in the neck.
The 28-year-old reportedly died on the spot and a picture in possession of our correspondent showed her corpse lying in a pool of her own blood on the road, where the incident happened.
A bullet hole was also seen on Aishat’s neck. The victim was dressed in a white top and a blue jean. Read more
Girl nabbed for killing father’s friend remanded, OPD pledges free legal services (Guardian)
The Lagos State Office of the Public Defender (OPD) has assured the teenager (name withheld) accused of killing her father’s friend while attempting to rape her, of free and quality legal representation throughout the duration of the trial.
The 15-year-old girl and resident of Aboru in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos was yesterday arraigned before the Ebute Metta Magistrate Court presided over by Mrs. Adedayo on a one-count charge of killing one Babatunde Ishola, aged 51 on March 7, 2020, at Nwadolu Street, Aboru, by stabbing him to death with a knife, thereby committing an offence punishable under section 225 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.
The presiding magistrate remanded her at the Correctional Home For Girls, Idi-Araba and subsequently adjourned the case to April 27.
Speaking on the plight of teenagers and other inmates of Correctional Centres in the state, the Director, Lagos State Office of the Public Defender (OPD), Mrs. Olayinka Adeyemi, said the office would not only provide the suspect with free legal services but also give her and other people being represented in courts on various cases, qualitative legal representation in terms of experience, knowledge and understanding of criminal laws of the land. COVID-19: Command releases suspects in police stations, units (Punch)
Some suspects being detained in police stations and units under the Lagos State Police Command have been released due to the spread of the coronavirus disease.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had directed that suspects held for minor offences be released from police cells, while the Commissioner of Police in the state, Hakeem Odumosu, on Saturday directed all Divisional Police Officers to release minor offenders in their custody.
During a visit to the Anti-Cultism Unit in the Gbagada area of the state on Tuesday, PUNCH Metro learnt that some minor offenders had been released from custody.
A source told our correspondent that the suspects were released to their family members in order to decongest the cells, while the suspects in high profile cases were still being held.
The source said, “We are not the only unit that released suspects; even the Special Anti-robbery Squad at the command headquarters and other divisions in the state have also released suspects held for minor offences.
“We are even rejecting some of the suspects with minor offences that they wanted to send to us from the SARS office, because we don’t know who is carrying the virus among them. We are being careful with those in our cell so as to prevent the spread of the disease and even those with serious cases, who are still in the cell, have been spaced and given hand sanitizers to use, because prevention is better than cure.” Read more
Police storm Lagos ritualists’ den, arrest suspect (Punch)
A suspected ritualist, Dona Asogbo, has been arrested by the personnel of the Lagos State Police Command.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the suspect was arrested when the personnel stormed a ritualists’ den at Oko-Afo in the Badagry area of the state, while acting on a tip-off by a resident of the community, Yusuf Rashid.
Rashid reportedly told the police that an uncompleted building in the community had been turned into a centre, where various crimes were being perpetrated.
He explained that activities in the uncompleted building had been sources of tension for residents and traders in the community.
During the raid, which was carried out around 6am on Saturday, it was learnt that Asogbo was arrested, while his partner, Peter Alogbo, escaped. Read more
Land-grabbers allegedly kill Lagos businessman during scuffle (Punch)
The family of Samson Akinde, who died from the injuries he sustained during an attack by alleged land-grabbers at the boundary between Isheri-Fagbile and Amuwo-Kuje areas of White Sand in Lagos State has demanded justice over his death.
The White Sand is located between the Ikotun-Igando Local Council Development and the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government areas of the state.
PUNCH Metro gathered that two families were laying claims to the ownership of the land at White Sand and were set to meet to agree on the boundaries when the land-grabbers allegedly invaded the venue of the meeting.
It was learnt that the land-grabbers were allegedly mobilised by a faction of one of the families and used sophisticated weapons to disrupt the gathering and in the process attacked Samson.
Samson’s elder brother, Segun, who witnessed the incident, alleged that the father of eight died from the injuries he sustained during the attack, and called for justice for the victim. Read more
Coronavirus: Police shut down 15 schools in Lagos (Guardian)
Lagos State Police Command has in the last six days deployed its resources across the state to ensure that the guidelines and directives issued by both the federal and state governments to prevent the spread of Coronavirus are fully obeyed.
The enforcement team shut down 15 schools, 8 clubs, 6 event centres and 8 places of worship for non-compliance.
According to Lagos State police spokesman, Bala Elkana, “With the directives issued by Lagos State Government on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, the enforcement would now be extended to all markets and stores, except markets that are selling food items, water, medicine, pharmacies, medical equipment and other related essential life-saving products, with effect from Thursday, March 26, 2020. Four, vessel charged with oil theft in Lagos (Nation)
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday charged four individuals and a vessel with petroleum theft at the Federal High Court in Lagos.
The defendants are: Robert Agbenyo, Fulani Macaulay, Nwafor Joshua, William Kelvin and a ship, MV Ella.
They were arraigned before Justice Sule Hassan on a four-count charge of conspiracy, illegal dealing in 100 metric tonnes of petroleum products without licence and dealing in inferior products.
EFCC counsel U. U. Buhari and A. O. Muhammed told the judge that the defendants conspired and committed the offences on December 27, 2019. Read more
