Lagos Police rescue kidnapped toddler in Ogun, arrest suspect (ThisDay)
Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested Jumoke Adesida, 35, for allegedly kidnapping two years old Rokibat Raji in Jerry Farm area of Ikorodu, Lagos and took her to Ogun State.
Police report revealed that on June 22, 2018, Adesida allegedly kidnapped the toddler after the mother, Mrs. Aminat Abidoye, left her in the care of her neighbours in her shop located at 12 Kazeem Adeboye street, Odogunyan at Ikorodu to buy some eggs.
But upon her return, she realised that her daughter had disappeared. Abidoye narrated that: “I rushed to buy some eggs from the market to sell. So I left my daughter in the shop with my neighbours.
When I returned, I noticed she was not around. My neighbours and I searched everywhere but all our efforts were futile. So, I reported to the police station at Shagamu road, Ikorodu.” Read more
Make-up artist steals beauty products from supermarket in Lagos (Independent)
The convict, 24-year-old Ebikeme, was arraigned on a count charge of stealing, to which he pleaded guilty.
The Magistrate, Mrs M. O. Ope-Agbe, who handed down the verdict, warned the convict never to involve himself in crime because next time, he would be sent to prison. She said that Ebikeme should sweep the court’s premises from the fourth floor to the ground floor.
The magistrate added that the convict got only community service as punishment because he had a job which he should try to get better at. Read more
Command arrests labourer for defiling 5-year-old girl (Punch)
A labourer, Achibong Koko, has been arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly defiling a five-year-old girl.
It was gathered that detectives arrested the suspect on Sunday, June 24, 2018, at his residence on Dansa Street, Abule-Oshun. During a press briefing on Wednesday, the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, said a medical test that was conducted on the victim showed her hymen was broken.
He said, “Information was received by the Divisional Police Officer, Onireke division, that a five-year-old girl had been defiled. A team of detectives was mobilised to the area, where the suspect, Achibong Koko, was arrested. Read more
Lagos Police rescues 7 girls from Sex Trafficker, Hunts for Suspect (ThisDay)
The Lagos State Police has rescued seven girls at the Agofure park at Mile2 Lagos from a woman trafficker, who was possibly taking them across the border for prostitution and drug trafficking among other related crimes.
According to the police during the parade of suspects at the Command Headquarters Ikeja, officers of Layeni Station Ojo-Road rescued the girls on arrival at the Agofure park on Friday June 22 this year.
The State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, disclosed that a member of public had called to inform the police that some girls were seen at Agofure motor park, Mile 2 Lagos. Read more
3 motorcyclists shot dead in Oshodi clash (Guardian)
Three Okada riders were reportedly shot dead in a clash between officers of Lagos State Taskforce and Oju-Irin boys in Oshodi. But a task force spokesman Taofeek Adebayo told The Guardian said he was aware of the incident.
He, however, claimed that men of the task force were not involved in the clash. Eyewitnesses insisted that the three unidentified victims were hit by stray bullets fired by the security agents who intended scaring off the area boys.
It was gathered that a member of the Oju-Irin boys had a bet on Nigeria’s final Group D match against Argentina with a member of the task force. Nigeria, against the wish of the task force officer, lost the match and missed qualification to the round of 16 knockout stage of the competition. Read more
Again, Evans fails to stop trial in fifth arraignment (Guardian)
A Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere yesterday dismissed another application by suspected kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike a.k.a Evans, seeking to stop his fifth arraignment.
Justice Adedayo Akintoye upheld the argument of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Titilayo Shitta-Bey, that a prima facie case has been established against the defendant.
The judge held that Evans’ claim that the five-count charge of conspiracy, kidnapping and attempted murder, was “grossly defective, repetitive and an abuse of court processes” lacks merit. Read more
Police uncover torture shrine in Lagos (Vanguard)
A shrine allegedly used as an illegal detention camp by suspected members of Odua People’s Congress, OPC, in Opebi area of Lagos, where persons accused of different offences are arrested, tortured and detained, has been uncovered by the Police.
Three suspected operators of the shrine were arrested with a POS machine used to extort anyone found guilty.
Also recovered in the shrine were different banks Automated Teller Machine, ATM, cards and telephones suspected to have been seized from victims. Vanguard gathered that people visited the shrine to lodge complaints, after which the accused is either invited or forcefully dragged there.
Victims, according to residents, were publicly tortured before being dragged inside the shrine to swear. The state Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who led a team of policemen to the shrine yesterday, ordered its immediate demolition. Read more
Fake SAN bags 1-year jail term (DailyTrust)
Justice Mojisola Dada of a Special Offences Court, sitting in Lagos has sentenced a 27-year-old man to one-year jail term for impersonating a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
The convict, Raphael Omotayo, was first arraigned on February 5, 2018 by EFCC, for allegedly parading himself as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN. He pleaded not guilty but he later changed his plea on Tuesday.
The commission also alleged that Omotayo was found to be in possession of some fraudulent documents where he also claimed to be Michael Blacks.
Some documents were obtained from Omotayo’s computer that revealed that he pretended to be a SAN in order to defraud an American, one Ms. Juliet of an undisclosed amount of money. Read more
Court remands wife for ‘killing, mutilating’ hubby’s body (Nation)
A Lagos High Court yesterday ordered that a lawyer, Udeme Otike-Odibe, be remanded in prison following her arraignment for allegedly killing her husband and mutilating his body.
Otike-Odibe, 47, was slammed with a two-count charge of murder and tampering with a body, contrary to Sections 223 and 165(b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The offences are punishable by death and five years’ imprisonment. Prosecuting Counsel Babatunde Sunmonu told Justice Adedayo Akintoye that Otike-Odibe stabbed Symphorosa (Sym), 50, to death with a knife and severed his genital. She allegedly attempted to commit suicide afterwards. Read more
Alleged rape: Ex-UNILAG lecturer to open defence Sept 17 (PremiumTimes)
Afeez Baruwa, a former part-time lecturer at the University of Lagos, is set to commence his defence on September 17 against a charge of rape of an 18-year-old admission seeker.
Justice Josephine Oyefeso of an Ikeja High Court gave the date after the case came up for mention on Monday. The lecturer was represented by Taiwo Akindele while Y. G. Oshoala is the lead prosecutor for the state.
Two witnesses are to testify in the September trial in defence of Mr Baruwa. The prosecution had on January 23 closed its case against the former lecturer.
Four prosecution witnesses had testified during the trial, including the complainant, her father, a medical doctor and the Investigating Police Officer. Read more
Police dock 3 kidnap suspects in Lagos (DailyTrust)
Three men who allegedly abducted a woman for ransom of N20 million have been arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court.
The accused persons are Finboy Brown, 24, Emeka Richard, 19 and Unity Udoy. The police said the accused were arrested after they abducted a Lagos business woman, Daisy Ada Vwarak, from her Ilupeju home.
The prosecutor, Mr. Benson Emuerhi told the court that after abducting the woman, the accused persons demanded for the sum of N20 million as ransom before they would free her. The prosecutor said the accused persons used two telephone numbers to make contact for the ransom.
He said they also gave details of the bank account into which the victim should pay the ransom and threatened that if she contacted the police, she would be killed. Read more
LASU student jumps into Lagos lagoon (Vanguard)
An undergraduate student of Lagos State University, LASU, Kingsley Gabriel, Monday, jumped into Lagos lagoon, weeks after a woman was alleged to have jumped into lagoon in the state.
Vanguard gathered that the student jumped from Falomo Bridge into the lagoon at about 11 am, leaving no reason for his action.
Confirming the act, General Manager, Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, lamented that the act was becoming rampant worrisome on Lagos waterways. Read more
Police place N1m bounty on masked lady (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has offered a N1m reward to anybody with useful information that will lead to the arrest of a masked lady who alleged that a policeman, Inspector Christopher Nabugwu, was living in opulence.
The masked woman had, in a video that went viral on social media, alleged that Nabugwu was worth over N2bn in cash and assets, adding that he owned a building on 27 Remi Fani-Kayode Street, GRA, Ikeja, worth N250m, and used exotic cars.
According to a statement on Sunday by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, the allegations caught the attention of the Inspector-General of Police, who ordered an investigation into the allegation. Read more
Police arrest 21 persons over killing in Lagos (Vanguard)
The police in Lagos have arrested 21 persons over the killing of a man at Alapere-Ketu, following a clash by two cult groups.
The Alapere Police Division had raided some cultists’ hideouts and made arrests on Kazeem, Aminu and Akampson Streets in Alapere.
The spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Chike Oti, confirmed the arrest to NAN on Sunday.
He said that the suspects were being interrogated. “Those linked to the crime will be prosecuted after conclusion of investigation,” Oti said. NAN reports that two rival cult groups clashed on June 16 in Alapere, resulting in the death of a man. Read more
Man killed as caterpillar swoops on Lagos Abattoir (NewTelegraph)
One of the residents of Oko Oba Abattoir, Agege, Lagos State, identified simply as Usman, was buried Sunday amidst tears.
Usman, said to be a scavenger, was allegedly killed when Lagos State Task Force officials, with their caterpillar, went to the Abattoir community to carry out a demolition exercise on Saturday.
A friend of the deceased, who gave his name as Muritala, said: “We’re not troublemakers! We don’t have anywhere to go; that was why we couldn’t leave the railway line since they asked us.
Now, one of us has been killed.
The deceased was planning to send some baby clothes and other things he bought for his wife, when he was killed. His wife was just delivered of a baby. Read more
