Alleged forgery: Court overrules Lagos prince’s conviction (Punch)
The Lagos State High Court has overruled the conviction of a prince and aspirant to the title of Oluwa of Lagos, Shamsondeen Oluwa, of forgery.
A Lagos State Magistrate’s Court presided over by Mr. A. A. Adesanya, had in an August 5, 2015 judgment convicted Oluwa and four others of charges of conspiracy and forgery The others are Ismaikla Oluwa, Tajudeen Oluwa and Muse Oluwa.
The magistrate held that they were guilty of forging a public notice of March 5, 2013. Dissatisfied with the judgment, however, they appealed to Justice Modupe Nicol-Clay of the Lagos State High Court, contending that their conviction was wrongful. Read more
Court orders psychiatric test for mother who burned her daughter with electric iron (Guardian)
A 30-year-old woman, Ayo Sheriff, who was remanded in Kirikiri prison for using hot pressing iron to torture her daughter has been granted bail in the sum of N200,000.
In a ruling on Monday, the Magistrate, Mrs. O. Sule-Amzat, granted the bail to Sheriff with two sureties in like sum. Sule-Hamzat said the sureties must be gainfully employed and one of them must be a relative.
Also, an order that a psychiatric test be conducted on the defendant was also issued and that the result must be presented before the court on the next adjourned date of June 21. Read more
Policemen allegedly detain hairstylist for looking like gay (Punch)
A hairstylist, Oluwatosin Idowu, has demanded the prosecution of some policemen who allegedly arrested him for looking like a gay.
Punch Metro learnt that the 27-year-old, who lived in the Palmgroove, Somolu area of Lagos State, was going to meet a client on Monday in the Ogudu area of the state when the incident happened.
Our correspondent learnt that the Epe, Lagos State indigene, had alighted from a BRT vehicle at Ojota when he was accosted by the gun-wielding operatives around 9am. Read more
12 oil thieves jailed in Lagos (Nation)
The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Monday sentenced 12 men to six years imprisonment each for dealing in 600,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) without lawful authority.
The convicts were arraigned on four- count charge of conspiracy, dealing in diesel without lawful authority and forgery by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in October 2015.
Those convicted were – Christopher Okorie, John Mbah, Tammy Bami, Osi Prince, Chukwuji Festus, Kabiru Adeyemo, Ayannubi Moses, Sopuruchukwu Chukwudi, Obinna Ebu, Abdullahi Oyelade, Charles Ubey and Achia Vincent. Read more
Policemen torture designer as N35,000 disappears (Punch)
An interior designer, Dapo Oguntimehin, has lamented the alleged harassment and torture meted out to him by some policemen attached to the Amukoko Police Division, Lagos State.
Oguntimehin said he was returning home from work around 10.30pm on Friday when he was cornered at a bus stop by the policemen, who dragged him into their operational vehicle.
The victim claimed that he was locked up in a cell after getting “serous beating,” adding that he was released after N3,500 was paid for his bail.
The 33-year-old told Punch Metro that he was shocked when the policemen could not produce a bag he brought to the station, which he claimed contained Automated Teller Machine cards, business cards, cardigan and N35,000. Read more
Police rescue commercial sex worker from client in Lagos hotel (PremiumTimes)
The police in Lagos on Monday said that they rescued a commercial sex worker from a client in a hotel room, following an attempted murder.
The state Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, said that the police prompt response to a distress call from a worker at Wellwood Hotel, Ajangbadi, Lagos led to the rescue of victim and arrest of the suspect.
Mr Imohimi said: “On the May 24 at about 12:35 a.m, a distress call was received from Wellwood Hotel. “The duty officer that night at Ilemba Hausa Division, quickly went to the hotel where he found one Faith, a commercial sex worker, with severe injuries on her neck.
“The victim claimed that on the same date at about 12.15 a.m., the suspect came to her hotel room. After sleeping with her, he brought out a rope, tied it around her neck and pulled her down. Read more
Baby boy sold for N.25m in Lagos (Independent)
Two suspects had been arrested in Lagos on the allegation that they belonged to a syndicate of child trafficking and have sold a newborn baby boy for N250,000. Edgal Imohimi, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, who paraded the suspects along with other suspected criminals in Lagos on Monday said that on April 23, 2018, information was received that Regina Ibeto, a 50-year-old woman who reside at No. 96, Bunmi Ajakaye Street, Ajangbadi, allegedly induced pregnant women, and when they eventually give birth, she sold the newborn babies.
“On the strength of the information, the Divisional Police Officer, Ajangbadi Division, led operatives to the compound where the said Regina was found administering intravenous injection (drip) to one Uju Nnamdi of No. 22, Imude Road who claimed to be sick and five months pregnant. Read more
Salesman steals N3.3m drinks from employer (Punch)
A salesman, Abraham Oluwafemi, has been arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing drinks valued at N3.3m belonging to his employer, Grace Network Nigeria Limited.
The accused was alleged to have sold 45 cartons of drinks and diverted the proceeds into a private account.
He was arraigned on two counts of stealing and conversion of goods. The charges read, “That you, Abraham Oluwafemi, on May 11, 2018, at about 3.30pm, on Apogbon Issa Williams Street, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did steal 45 different stocks of drinks valued at N3,343,390, property of His Grace Network Nigeria Limited. Police arrest 4 men using sick people as beggars in Lagos (Vanguard)
Police in Lagos have arrested four men who allegedly specialised in using an unregistered NGO to defraud people under the guise of soliciting funds for the sick. The Commissioner of Police in Lagos, CP Edgal Imohimi, said the suspects pretended to be gathering money from the public for the treatment of sick people but eventually diverted the funds realised. “On May 27, about 8p.m, an NGO based in Lagos informed the police about the illegal activities of an unregistered NGO that operates as a body that helps people with debilitating illnesses to raise funds for their treatment.
