Abia moves to counter ‘japa syndrome’ in health sector by producing more nurses (ThisDay)

With the shortage of personnel engendered by the pervasive relocation to western countries, popularly called  ‘japa syndrome’ in the health sector, Abia State has adopted the collegiate system to produce more nurses. 

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Ngozi Okoronkwo, told journalists in Umuahia that with the collegiate system, Abia would be able to produce adequate number of nurses on a sustainable level. 

She stated that by producing more nurses, the effect of japa syndrome would be erased and Abia would even have enough to export as “the nurses we produce meet global standard”. Read more 

Lagos seals Ajah market over poor waste management (Punch)

The Lagos State Government, on Sunday, sealed the Ajah Market over poor waste management

This was made known by the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on New Media, Jubril Gawat, in a tweet via his profile on X (formerly Twitter).

The governor’s aide noted that the exercise was carried out by officials of the  Lagos State Waste Management Agency, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and the Environmental Task Force. Read more 

Bribery Allegations: Anxious Diezani asks for prayers (Guardian)

Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke is seeking divine intervention in the multi-million pounds allegations and charges of bribery and corruption instituted against her by the United Kingdom National Crime Agency (NCA).

Besides heavenly intervention, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), who is representing one of those linked to the case, is of the view that the charges “are weak” and won’t probably send the former minister and others down.

Allison-Madueke, who together with Doye Agame and Olatimbo Ayinde, appeared before a Southwark Crown Court judge on Monday is “anxious for the case to be heard,” and then move on with her life, her lawyer told the court during the Plea and Trial Preparation hearing in Courtroom 14. Read more 

Adeosun, Makinde, others to receive World Peace Award (Sun)

The former Nigerian Army Chief of Training and Operations, Lt. Gen. Lamidi Adeosun, has won the award of the World Institute of Peace and would be declared as ‘The Bearer of Security Torch,’ by the institute.

Others who won the world peace award are House of Representatives member, Hon Abiola Makinde, a traditional ruler in Osun State, Oba Adekunle Makama of Owu Kuta, and former Field Commander of Osun Security Network Asagency (Amotekun), Comrade Amitolu Shitu.

The Executive Director of the Institute, Chief Lamina Omotoyosi, disclosed this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo, on Sunday. Read more 

RATTAWU honours LASTMA officer with ‘‘Exceptional Service’’ award

An operative of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Mr. Atayi Anthony Temitope (Area Golf Command Zone 7 Ejigbo) was honoured with an award of ‘Exceptional Service’ over the weekend by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Chapter of the Radio Television Theater and Arts Workers Union in Lagos.

The Director, of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA Mr Adebayo Taofiq disclosed that Traffic Officer Atayi Anthony Temitope was honoured with the award during the celebration of ‘RATTAWU WEEK’ held at Media Centre of NAN, National Arts Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos.

Chairman of RATTAWU, NAN Chapter Comrade Ayodeji Fadipe stated that the awardee was honoured due to his dedication and commitment to ensuring unimpeded free flow of traffic around Jakande Estate down to Oke-Afa area of the State. Read more

15-year-old boy who escaped from kidnappers gets 6 years scholarship (Nation)

A15-year-old Treasure Ayuba who escaped from his kidnappers’ den after over two years in captivity has been granted a six-year scholarship by the Restoration Bible Church in Kaduna.

Treasure was among about 121 students of the Baptist Academy, Kaduna, who were kidnapped on July 15, 2021, from the school in Kujama, on the outskirts of Kaduna.

After payment of a huge ransom, about 120 of the students were released by their abductors, while holding back Treasure who was said to be the youngest of all the students kidnapped. Read more

Bayelsa Guber: Intervene before supporters resort to self defence, group urges IGP (Vanguard)

A group known as New Generation Leaders of Bayelsa State has called on the Inspector General of Police, IGP, to intervene in the widespread attacks of stalwarts and supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state ahead of Saturday’s governorship elections.

The group while condemning attacks on the supporters of the APC and its governorship candidate, Chief Timipre Sylva, warned that supporters of the party could resort to self defence if security personnel do not intervene, adding that the attacks are connected to the rising popularity and teaming support for the APC in the state. Ogun probes water factories over Cholera outbreak (DailyTrust)

The Ogun state government says it will conduct compliance exercises on all table and sachet water factories in the state, following the outbreak of cholera in some parts of the state.

The government vowed that any company that failed the test “will be shut and remain so until it passes the laid down procedures.”

Our correspondent reports that at least 12 persons have died out of about 250 cases of cholera recorded in Ijebu North, Abeokuta North and Abeokuta South local government areas of the state. Read more

Guinea’s former dictator Camara recaptured hours after jailbreak (France24)

Guinea’s ex-dictator Moussa Dadis Camara was recaptured and returned to prison on Saturday, hours after an apparent jailbreak led by a heavily armed commando, the army and his lawyer said.

At least two other former officials on trial alongside Camara over a 2009 massacre during his presidency were taken in the earlier operation that sparked heavy gunfire in the capital Conakry, a minister and lawyers said.

“Captain Moussa Dadis Camara has been found safe and sound and taken back to prison,” an army spokesperson told AFP, without specifying the circumstances of the capture. One of Camara’s lawyers, Jocamey Haba, told AFP his client was back behind bars. Read more

Blinken blasts settler violence, tells Abbas Gazans must not be ‘‘forcibly displaced’’ (TimesOfIsrael)

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on Sunday in the top American diplomat’s first trip to the West Bank since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war.

Shortly after the meeting, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Blinken told Abbas that Palestinians in Gaza “must not be forcibly displaced.”

Miller also said the pair also discussed “the need to stop extremist violence against Palestinians” in the West Bank, presumably referring to the rapidly rising number of recent attacks — some deadly — committed by extremist settlers. According to Hebrew media reports, the Shin Bet security service has warned the government of its concerns of an eruption of violence in the West Bank if settler extremists are not reined in. Philippines radio presenter shot dead in front of Facebook livestream viewers (LBC)

A radio presenter was fatally shot by a man inside his southern Philippines station on Sunday in a brazen attack that was witnessed by people watching the programme live on Facebook.

The gunman gained entry to the home studio of provincial news broadcaster Juan Jumalon by pretending to be a listener.

He then shot the 57-year-old twice during a live morning broadcast in Calamba town in Misamis Occidental province, police said. Read more

Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mone Inami won the Japan Classic – her first LPGA title – on Sunday after overnight co-leader Nasa Hataoka fell apart in the final round.

Inami, who beat New Zealand’s Lydia Ko in a play-off to finish second behind American Nelly Korda at the Tokyo Games two years ago, began the day one shot behind Japanese compatriots Hataoka and Shiho Kuwaki.
