AFRIFF 2023 reveals jury to include “They Cloned Tyrone” producer Stephen “Dr.” Love as president

The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) is set to captivate audiences once again as it announces the star-studded jury panel for its highly anticipated 12th edition, slated for November 5 to 11, 2023, in the vibrant city of Lagos, Nigeria.

According to Head of PR & Media for AFRIFF 2023, Latasha Ngwube, with over 2,000 film submissions pouring in from more than 100 countries across five continents, the prestigious jury has meticulously selected over 100 films and is now entrusted with the task of determining the finalists for the coveted AFRIFF Globe Awards.

Leading this remarkable assembly is none other than Stephen ‘Dr.’ Love, the acclaimed producer behind one of Netflix’s most-watched films of the year, They Cloned Tyrone, starring the renowned Nigerian-British actor, John Boyega. Love’s impressive career in the global filmmaking industry solidifies him as an ideal choice for the role of jury president.

The distinguished jury further comprises a constellation of luminaries, including Emmy-nominated Nigerian-British writer-producer Abby Ajayi, celebrated Nigerian film producer Greg Otudayo, and the Zimbabwean award-winning author, Tsitsi Dangarembga, who recently clinched the 2023 African Peace Prize. Joining them is the Lebanese-French actress and director, Wafa’a Céline Halawi, along with a lineup of other renowned figures from the film and entertainment world.

This year’s AFRIFF is set to make an indelible mark, following the successful 2022 edition where Disney’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Amazon’s Nanny, recipient of the Sundance Grand Jury Prize, graced the festival. The event attracted major industry players such as Paramount, Amazon, Disney, Netflix, Showmax, Mediawan, DStv, Dentsu, the African Union, Canal Plus, Afreximbank, and numerous other global stakeholders, fostering opportunities to further nurture the growth of the African creative industry.

The international jury is poised to present 14 prestigious Globe Awards, recognising the pinnacle of artistry and mastery in the realm of visual storytelling. The AFRIFF 2023 promises to be a celebration of African and global cinema that transcends borders and promises to be an event that enthusiasts of filmmaking and storytelling cannot afford to miss.
