Again, fire guts vehicle on Third Mainland Bridge (Vanguard)

Barely 24 hours after seven passengers were burnt to death in the Iyana-Oworo area of Lagos, another bus reportedly went up in flames on the Third Mainland Bridge.

The incident occurred at UNILAG WaterFront at about noon.

Eyewitnesses’ account said the bus was in motion inward Adeniji Adele, Lagos Island when fire suddenly engulfed it. Read more 

10-year-old raped, killed in Lagos, comedienne Princess alleges (Punch)

Nigerian comedienne and actress, Damilola Adekoya, popularly known as Princess, on Monday raised the alarm on the rape and death of a 10-year-old in the Ayobo area of Lagos State.

In a video on her Instagram page, Princess stated that the incident happened on Sunday, adding that the police had denied the victim’s family access to the child’s corpse.

She, therefore, made a plea to the general public to visit the Ayobo police station and assist the child’s mother in getting justice.

The teary Princess said, “If you live around Ayobo, help me go to Ayobo police station. This girl was raped and killed yesterday. Her name is Aisha. Read more 

Grid crashes to zero megawatts, 7th time in 2022 (DailyTrust)

The national grid crashed to zero megawatts (MW) at 10:51am on Monday, causing a nationwide outage, Daily Trust reports.

The development occurred days after electricity consumers said they had enjoyed improved supply.

The national electricity grid as of 10am on Monday had 3,712MW generated from 21 Generation Companies (GenCos) before it dropped to 0MW one hour after.

According to the information from the System Operations, only a section of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Afam IV, was on the grid but with zero supply as of 12noon.

As of Sunday, the highest generation was 4,100MW while the lowest was 3,652MW with the frequency hovering between 49.04 Hertz (Hz) and 50.34Hz. Read more 

Charity targets N75m relief for orphans, special needs others (ThisDay)

Worship4Change, a faith-centered non-profit organisation is slated to hold its fifth edition charity fundraising concert targeting N75 million for charities across Nigeria.

GIZ trains women, youths on waste recycling in Ikorodu (Independent)

The Pro-Poor Growth and Promotion of Employment (SEDIN) programme of the German Development Agency (GIZ) has trained women and youths in Ikorodu Local Government Area of the state on plastic waste recycling.

Peter Ayobami, Technical Director for Al – Afrik Trade Consultants, the consulting company that is in charge of the recycling value chain project for GIZ –SEDIN who facilitated the training said that the programme has been on for six month and that the training was organized to enlighten participants on the various wealth creation opportunities in plastic recycling value chain in Lagos state.

He said that the participants were trained using the Business Entry Guide developed by GIZ in partnership with Fate Foundation and Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) on the step-by-step process of setting up a plastic waste recycling business. Read more

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described health insurance as a vital tool that can be leveraged by public office holders and world leaders in a bid to achieve Universal Healthcare Coverage for citizens.

According to a statement on Sunday, the governor disclosed this during an event at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House, London.

Sanwo-Olu, who spoke on the theme, ‘Universal health coverage in Nigeria: Optimising institutional opportunities and partnerships for success,’ advised global think tanks to optimise institutional opportunities and partnerships for the achievement of UHC.

He said, “To achieve UHC, developing countries must first focus on offering their residents a basic minimum set of healthcare services, provided free at the point of care using subsidy, controlled premiums or at a pre-set tariff system, within government-regulated facilities either public or affiliated private. Lagos Arewa Community backs Tinubu’s presidential bid (Tribune)

Members of the Arewa Community within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, have made known their resolve to support Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid, to record an overwhelming victory in the 2023 presidential election.

The Chairman of the body, Saadu Yusuf Dandare, who is also the Chairman of Arewa Community APC South-West, gave the assurance on Sunday, in Lagos, where he noted that Tinubu’s victory as president is critical to them.

ASUU Strike: UNICAL loses over 21 lecturers (Vanguard)

Over 21 Professors and senior lecturers have lost their lives at the University of Calabar as a result of the ongoing strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

This is as the death toll increases on daily basis in different universities in the country.

Recall that ASUU declared a one-month warning strike on February 14 this year over the inability of the Federal Government to address their demands and the public universities’ gates have remained locked since then.

ASUU, alongside three other university-based unions, had declared the industrial dispute over about seven demands that they wanted the government to address.

The three university-based unions that joined in the strike but later suspended it after reaching an agreement with the government are the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT. The Oscar winner, who has become known for making over-the-top comments, shares Apple with rocker ex-husband Chris Martin, 45.

Two of the most venerated actors in Hollywood history, Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep, attended A Celebration of Film gala Saturday at The University of Texas at Austin, which included an endowment dedicated in De Niro’s name.

De Niro was clad in a dark navy blue shirt with a grey tie and glasses. Streep was clad in a dark brown lace coat over a green top with dark brown pants and her hair pulled back. She wore glasses and dangling earrings to the autumn event. 

The De Niro Curator of Film endowment, which was announced three months ago, will showcase artifacts from De Niro’s career, including costumes, props and scripts, at the university’s Harry Ransom Center, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

The display will also include an etched glass window featuring the Goodfellas star. De Niro, 79, made an ‘undisclosed contribution’ to funding toward the endowment, according to the paper, which has a goal of $3 million. Read more 

Universal acquires Westbrook Studios action comedy ‘‘Regulators’’, starring Nicky Jam (Deadline)

Universal Pictures has acquired the action-comedy Regulators, starring Nicky Jam, who is also producing via music label La Industria, Inc.

The deal followed multiple studio bids for the Westbrook Studios project. Story details are being kept under wraps.

Brooks McLaren and D.J. Cotrona are attached to write the screenplay based on their pitch to the studio. The two have already appeared on the Black List for their action script Fight or Flight.

In addition to Jam, Will Smith, Jon Mone, Miguel Melendez and Heather Washington will produce the feature for Westbrook Studios, alongside Juan Diego Medina and Lorenzo Braun for La Industria, Inc. / Three Six Zero. Read more

Writer-producer Zack Estrin has died aged 51 (NME)

Zack Estrin – known for his work on Prison Break and Netflix’s Lost In Space – has died, aged 51.

The writer-producer died in Hermosa Beach, California, on Friday September 23, confirmed by his talent agency, WME.

Circumstances surrounding Estrin’s death are not currently clear. Estrin is suspected of dying from a cardiac arrest after collapsing while jogging, though an exact cause of death is still pending an autopsy.

In a statement per Variety, Estrin’s family called him “the best husband, father, son and friend. “Zack Estrin was our everything,” the statement read. “He loved to make everyone happy. He loved to make everyone laugh. He loved being a writer/producer and being a part of creating these shows that people enjoyed. But above all, he loved his family and friends. Read more

Reports of a “screaming match” between Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh on the set of “Don’t Worry Darling” are “absurd gossip,” according to a Sunday statement signed by 40 crew members.

“As a crew, we’ve avoided addressing the absurd gossip surrounding the movie we’re so proud of, but feel the need to correct the anonymous ‘sources’ quoted in a recent article,” reads the statement obtained by TheWrap. “There was never a screaming match between our director and anyone, let alone a member of our cast.”

The statement follows a Friday report from Vulture in which an anonymous source recalled a “screaming match” between Wilde and Pugh. The report said then-studio head Toby Emmerich had to intervene and moderate a “long negotiation process” to ensure that Pugh would participate in the movie’s press promotion and “not jeopardize the potential box office.” Read more

Nelly is giving props to his friends in country music — going as far as to say they may be more athletic than his Hip Hop counterparts.

In a reel uploaded to Instagram on Thursday (September 22), the St. Louis native revealed the outcome of a conversation he was having with a group of friends and gave props to country artists, claiming their athleticism shouldn’t be slept on.

“We had a long ass debate last night on who had the best athletes in entertainment,” he began. “A large majority of everybody was yelling that Hip Hop had the best athletes. Pharoah Sanders, the influential tenor saxophonist revered in the jazz world for the spirituality of his work, has died, his record label announced. He was 81.

Sanders, who launched his career playing alongside John Coltrane in the 1960s, died in Los Angeles early Saturday, said the tweet from Luaka Bop, the label that released his 2021 album, “Promises.” It did not specify a cause. A phone message to Luaka Bop in New York was not immediately returned.

“We are devastated to share that Pharoah Sanders has passed away. He died peacefully surrounded by loving family and friends in Los Angeles earlier this morning. Philippines’ Marcos Jr orders aid for typhoon-struck areas, 5 reported dead (StraitsTimes)

Philippine authorities rushed on Monday to distribute aid to thousands of evacuees after typhoon Noru made landfall in the capital and northern provinces, leaving at least five dead and many areas flooded.

Sustained winds of 185kmh hit the main island of Luzon at the weekend, prompting authorities to shut schools, government offices and the stock market through Monday.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr ordered supplies be airlifted and clean-up equipment be provided to most-affected communities.

“The point at which we can stand down is when the majority of evacuees are already back home,” Mr Marcos Jr said at a news conference with disaster management officials on Monday, referring to the 74,000 people who were forced into evacuation centres by the storm. Read more

Virgil van Dijk scored a late winner against Belgium on Sunday night to secure the Netherlands’ spot at next June’s Nations League finals.

The Liverpool defender nodded home in the 73rd minute to secure a 1-0 win in Amsterdam. The Netherlands will be joined in the four-team tournament by Croatia, who scored twice in the second-half to confirm a 3-1 victory against Austria in Vienna.

World champion Magnus Carlsen says he will soon have more to say on the cheating claims scandal that has rocked the sport of chess.

The month-long saga has cast a shadow over the game since Carlsen first alluded to possible cheating by young rival Hans Niemann.

Niemann, 19, defeated Carlsen in the Sinquefield Cup earlier this month, in what was the biggest win of the teenager’s career.

Carlsen then withdrew from the tournament, issuing a cryptic tweet which was taken as an indication he believed his less experienced opponent had cheated during the game. Read more

With six races remaining, Daniel Ricciardo’s future is no closer to being decided, with the 33-year-old still unsure on what he wants to do in 2023.

The Honey Badger’s torrid time at McLaren will, of course, come to an end at the conclusion of this season, with the Aussie and the Woking-based team having mutually decided to split rather than continue next year.

Ricciardo was contracted with McLaren for 2023; however, after 18 months of poor performances (excluding his Italian Grand Prix victory last year) it seems like the right thing to leave the British team.

The much-loved driver is being replaced by a fellow Australian, 21-year-old Oscar Piastri. Read more
