Alleged misappropriation of funds: Ambode to face Assembly panel on Wednesday (Nation)
The Lagos State House of Assembly has issued a fresh summons on the immediate past governor of the state, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode to appear before it on Wednesday.
The legislature, in the summons advertised in some newspapers today, wants the ex-Governor to appear before the Committee of the House by 1pm on Wednesday to say all he knows about some financial transactions during his tenure between May 29, 2015 and May 29, this year.
The publicized invite entitled: “Notice of summons: Mr Akinwunmi Ambode (the former Governor of Lagos State), is signed by the Clerk of the House, Mr. A. A. Sanni.
It reminds Ambode of the importance of appearing before the Committee to shed light on five-alleged infractions raised by the Assembly. Read more
Lagos Assembly lists Ambode’s ‘deadly sins’ (Punch)
The Lagos State House of Assembly has listed five ‘sins’ allegedly committed by a former governor of the state, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode.
The ‘sins’ include alleged unauthorised discounting of promissory note and purchase of 820 buses without due authorisation.
The Assembly, therefore, asked the former governor to appear before it by 1pm on Wednesday.
This made it the second time the governor was summoned.
He was first summoned about two weeks ago alongside former government officials, including the former commissioners for Finance, Economic Planning, Justice and Attorney General, and Permanent Secretary, Economic Planning.
The House had set up an ad hoc committee to investigate some financial misappropriation during the Ambode administration. Read more
Lagos-Ibadan rail: CCECC relocates pipelines, build drains, stations (Punch)
The persistent rains in the Lagos area of the ongoing construction of a new Lagos-Ibadan rail line have not stopped the contractor handling the project, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, from forging ahead with its work.
Specifically, the CCECC workers were on Friday seen on the construction site from Ebute-Meta to Iju railway corridor, excavating, relocating water and gas pipelines, constructing drains, bridges and erecting new level crossings and train stations.
The pipelines along the new rail line’s right of way were some of the encumbrances that have slowed down the pace of work on this section of the project in Lagos. The CCECC had earlier completed the track laying from Iju in Lagos to kilometre 157 in Ibadan. Read more
Woman burns 13-year-old housemaid’s stomach, lap with iron over N500 (Punch)
A 13-year-old housemaid, Monsurat, is battling burns her boss, one Mrs Mariam Hafia, allegedly inflicted on her stomach and lap with a hot electric iron.
Monsurat lived with Hafia and her husband on Ola Akinpelu Street, Alimosho area of Lagos and was said to have been hired out to the couple by her parents based in Oyo State.
City Round learnt that Hafia had given Monsurat, a Primary 2 pupil, N1, 500 to keep on September 29, but the girl presented N1, 000 the following day when told to bring the money. Read more
I was turned into sex machine at Kwara ‘rehab centre’, says rescued inmate (Nation)
TWENTY-year-old Laide Arikewuyo, one of the 108 girls rescued from an illegal rehabilitation centre in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, has said that she was turned into a sex machine by the children and relatives of the owner of the centre, Mallam AbdulRaheem Owotutu.
The Kwara State Police Command had on Thursday paraded the ladies, men and children it rescued from the rehab centre located in Gaa’Odota in the metropolis.
Narrating her ordeal, Miss Arikewuyo accused those charged to supervise the inmates of acts that bordered on sexual misdemeanor. Read more
Fayemi mourns Jibowu, Nigeria’s first female science graduate (Guardian)
Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has commiserated with the family of the late Lady Deborah Jibowu and the Fasanmade family of Ido-Ile Ekiti on the passing of their matriarch.
Jibowu who passed away at 95, was the first Nigerian female science graduate, having graduated from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom in 1947 and was a recipient of Member of the British Empire (MBE) in 1962 and Officer of the Order of Niger (OON) in 1965.
She was a member, Local Government Service Commission, Western Region from 1959-1971; Commissioner at the National Population Commission (NPC) 1981-1983 and Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Council, University of Calabar from 1993-1997. Read more
Chilean president vows major reshuffle after week of protests (Punch)
Chilean President Sebastian Pinera on Saturday announced a major government reshuffle, a day after more than one million people took to the streets in a massive protest for economic and political change.
“I asked all ministers to resign in order to form a new government and to be able to respond to these new demands,” he said in an address to the nation, adding that a highly controversial state of emergency might be lifted Sunday if “circumstances permit.”
The military also announced that an overnight curfew would be lifted Saturday. Read more
Protesters in Rome call for mayor to resign (Guardian)
Hundreds of people marched along the Tiber River on Saturday to demand Rome mayor Virginia Raggi resign over the state of the Italian capital.
“Raggi is turning the city into somewhere to run away from, instead of a city where people can live with dignity, work and build their future,” the Tutti per Rome (Everyone for Rome) organisation said ahead of the rally.
“The whole world pities us,” it said.
The march came a day after trade unions in Rome staged a general strike, with workers including bus drivers and garbage collectors taking a stand against the mayor and her ruling Five Star Movement administration. Read more

The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria have opened their 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup campaign with a 4-2 victory over Hungary at the Estádio Olímpico, Goiânia, Brazil.
Gyorgy Komaromi opened scoring for Hungary as early as three minutes into the match, with Samson Tijani converting a penalty for Nigeria after 20 minutes.

The Ireland Men’s cricket team has thumped Nigeria by eight wickets in their final Group Stage match of the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
The Irish team moved to the top spot in Group B and will nervously await Sunday’s match between Jersey and Oman to see who qualifies automatically for the World Cup.

In-form world number three Naomi Osaka believes she is better equipped to deal with the WTA Finals’ demanding round-robin format, after her maiden appearance at the season-ending showpiece ended in tears.
There was much attention on the Japanese sensation entering last year’s WTA Finals on the back of a controversial US Open victory over Serena Williams.
But Osaka failed to live up to the hype in a winless campaign that ended in tears when she was forced to retire against Kiki Bertens due to a hamstring injury.

Robert Lewandowski made yet more history on Saturday by netting in Bayern Munich’s home game against Union Berlin, setting a new record after scoring in each of the first nine Bundesliga matches this season.
The Poland striker showed clinical finishing by tucking away an Alphonso Davies second-half pass at the Allianz Arena to claim his 13th goal in his first nine league games this season.
He has now scored in each of his last 13 games for Bayern and means Lewandowski broke the previous league record, set by current Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who scored in each of the first eight games of the 2015/16 season for Borussia Dortmund. Read more
