Ambode bags award for exemplary performance (Punch)
The Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, has been given the award for Political Brand Personality of the Year by Marketing Edge magazine for his “exemplary performance in governance.” The Lagos State helmsman was rewarded at the 2018 Marketing Edge Annual National Marketing Summit & Advertising Awards of Excellence in Oregun, Ikeja, a statement said on Monday. The publisher and Chief Executive Officer of Marketing Edge, Mr John Ajayi, who announced the governor as the winner of the category, said selecting Ambode for the award was easy as his track record of exemplary performance towered above his peers. Lagos attracts N203.4bn property investments (NewTelegraph)
The public-private intervention in road rehabilitation of high-end Ligali Ayorinde neighbourhood of Victoria Island, Lagos, has attracted over N203.4 billion ($667 million) to the neighbourhood, New Telegraph has learnt. The British High Commissioner in Nigeria, Mr Paul Thomas Arkwright, said this at a forum organised by RICS, Nigeria group, to celebrate 150 years of the institute in Lagos. He added that the public-private intervention in upgrading the one kilometre road has led to major economic growth in the enclave in commercial and residential properties. The fellow of Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Mr. Akin Olawore, initiated the investment, which was in less than eight years. Read more
LASG pledges commitment to security (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has promised to commit more resources to the security of residents in order to achieve meaningful development. A statement on Monday said the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, stated this during the inauguration of the Orimedu Police Post in the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of the state. Ambode, who was represented on the occasion by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Communities and Communications, Hakeem Sulaimon, said, “No meaningful development can be achieved in an atmosphere of unrest, fear and uncertainty. We are determined to secure Lagos and this has made this administration to partner well-meaning individuals and the private sector that have, over the years, made generous and substantial contribution to the Lagos State Security Trust Fund. Lagos CP to officers: respect rights (Nation)
Lagos Commissioner of Police Mr Edgar Imohimi has urged officers to respect human rights. He spoke when 210 officers graduated from a training on “Advanced human rights and community policing standards”. It was organised by the Crime Victims Foundation of Nigeria (CRIVIFON) for officers from the rank of Inspectors to Deputy Superintendent of Police drawn from 120 divisions. Imohinmi, represented by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ronke Okunade, reminded the officers that the people they are policing have fundamental rights that must be enforced. Read more
Lagos CJ urges new magistrates to shun graft (Nation)
Chief Judge of Lagos Justice Opeyemi Oke has urged new magistrates to shun corruption. She spoke when she swore in three new magistrates and 50 presidents and members of the Customary Court. She urged them to dispense justice without fear or favour, affection and animosity. The event held at the CJ’s courtroom at the Ikeja High Court. The number of magistrates has thus increased from 130 to 133; the number of Customary Court presidents and members rose from 145 to 195. Justice Oke told the magistrates: “Be diligent in the discharge of your duties and constantly exhibit integrity, patience, open-mindedness, courtesy, tact and courage.” Read more
Lagos plans demolition for road expansion (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has said it will recover the Right of Way of Aradagun-Imeke-Iworo-Ajido-Epeme roads in the Badagry Local Government Area of the state. It, however, noted that all identified property owners affected by the decision would be compensated. The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Rotimi Ogunleye, stated this at a stakeholders’ meeting in Badagry, adding that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had directed that officials of the government talk with the citizens before embarking on any development that affected them. Lagos begins global campaign to drive investment (SUN)
The Lagos State Government has launched a global campaign to play up huge investment opportunities which abound in the state, with the view to turning Lagos into the most desirable investment destination in the world. The State Government, at the media launch of the campaign tagged ‘Lagos To The World (L2W) held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, at the weekend, also unveiled a deal book detailing investment opportunities in key sectors including health, transportation, oil and gas, among others. Speaking at the event which was attended by members of diplomatic missions and the business community, Special Adviser, Lagos State Office of Overseas Affairs and Investment, otherwise known as Lagos Global, Professor Ademola Abass, said the global campaign was an initiative of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration designed to better market and communicate investment opportunities in the State. Lagos begins crime scene investigation training (Nation)
The Lagos State Government through the Office of the Public Defender (OPD) yesterday began a three-day training for its lawyers on Forensic and Crime Scene Investigation (CSI). The programme is in collaboration with experts from the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) in Colorado, United States of America. Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Funlola Odunlami, said 40 lawyers are participating in the programme, which is the second in a series. She added: “In the modern age, science and the law work hand… This means that defence counsel must also have better understanding of the science to provide the best defence possible for clients, thus the need for the training”. CPC focuses on Lagos markets to avert re-bagging of expired products (Vanguard)
Consumers Protection Council, CPC, has express desire to focus on Lagos market to avoid re-occurrence of re-bagging expired products which is currently on the rise in the country. Director General of CPC, Mr. Babatunde Irukera, disclosed this while addressing journalists at the maiden Edition of Progressive Minds Forum, PMF, in Lagos. He said: “what we saw in the market of Uyo during our sting operation in regard to rice is very alarming and absolutely discouraging and I am certain that if that is happening in Uyo then there will be some kind of such in Lagos too where inappropriate, abused and not fit for consumption products could be sold.” Read more
‘Assaulted’ lawyer petitions Ambode, IG (Nation)
A lawyer, Olalekan Karimu, has petitioned Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris, for allegedly being assaulted by two policemen. The lawyer was seen in a video which went viral last Wednesday being slapped and threatened with guns by the officers from the Lion Building Police Command, in Lagos. Karimu, a former employee in the law firm of Olawore & Co of 28/30 McCarthy Street, Lagos Island, claimed in the July 5 petition, that the police were invited by his former employer. According to Lagos State Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, the firm’s senior partner is Mr Oluyomi Olawore. Read more
Again, Lagos rewards school debate winners with N10m cash (NewTelegraph)
For the second time in one week, Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has demonstrated his passion for education by rewarding handsomely finalists in the state’s schools debate in the three categories – primary, junior and secondary schools. Apart from winning prizes ranging from N1 million cash prizes for overall winners in the three categories, and N750,000 and N500,000 for the first and second runners-up respectively, all schools that came fourth in the contest got N250,000 each for their efforts. Lawmaker donates science kits, other items to Lagos students (NewTelegraph)
A lawmaker, Hon. Olajide Jimoh, representing Mainland Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has presented laboratory science tools to a student of Herbert Macaulay Girls Senior High school, Lagos, Adeshina Abimbola, who identified his Constituency Office in Lagos. Apart from the science kits, the student is also expected to attend a one-day academic counseling and interactive session, organised for senior secondary school students in the Federal Constituency by the lawmaker. The first in a series of annual conferences in which the works of celebrated Nigerian writer and scholar, Professor John Pepper Clark-Bekederemo is brought into focus to test their appeal and perennial relevance in a changing world will hold at the University of Lagos from tomorrow to Saturday. The conference tagged “J.P. Clark International Conference (JPCIC-2018)” is a collaboration between the Department of English of the University of Lagos and the Department of World Languages of Monmouth University, USA. I sleep with 7 men daily –Teenage girl (NewTelegraph)
An 18-year-old human trafficking victim, Deborah, allegedly lured into prostitution, has revealed that she used to sleep with more than seven men every day at Wagbas Hotel, located in the Ajah area of the metropolis. Two people, Mr. Ikechukwu Egbulefu (27) and Vera John (26), who operate the Wagbas Hotel, were alleged to have tricked Deborah, Helen (22) and Chinwendu (18), into prostitution, after promising to help them get decent jobs. Deborah said that she was lured into the act two months ago. She explained that by the time she realised she had worked into a trap, she couldn’t leave. Read more
Lagos CP storms SARS cells, releases 40 detainees (Vanguard)
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, has stormed the dreaded cells of the Federal Special Anti-robbery Squad, FEDSARS, at the Command Headquarters, Ikeja, and directed the immediate release of 40 suspects, while 30 other suspects, said to be involved in cultism, were ordered to be charged to court without delay. Edgal, who embarked on an extensive surprise night patrol of some volatile police formations in the state, also directed that, henceforth, suspects must be treated with dignity and in humane condition, pending the conclusion of their cases. hirteen of the 137 persons arrested for alleged cultism have accused the police of wrongfully picking them up. The suspects, who were paraded yesterday by Lagos State Police Chief Imohimi Edgal, claimed that they were arrested while going about their lawful businesses. The police on Saturday and Sunday nights raided some parts of the state to frustrate plans by the Black Axe confraternity to foment trouble during their yearly July 7 celebrations. About 120 of them were arrested at Ikorodu and a big banner with Black Axe logo, a keg laden with liquid suspected to be an Indian Hemp-based drink called ‘skoochies’, six small kegs of skoochies, a big clay pot, two small calabashes and a locally made pistol recovered from them. The others were nabbed at Ogombo in Ajah. Read more
Harvest of arrest as police pick 137 cultists during ‘77’ celebration (SUN)
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 137 suspected cult members in different locations of the state. The suspected cultists were observing the “7th day of the 7th month” celebration, where they initiate new members and celebrate their old members. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who paraded the suspects yesterday at the Command Headquarters, Ikeja, said that 120 were arrested in Ikorodu where they were observing ‘7-7’, undergoing initiation in preparation to unleash mayhem on the larger society. Based on intelligence available to the command, which was communicated to the officer in charge of the Anti-Cultism Unit, who deployed plainclothes policemen to Ikorodu, police “efforts paid off last week while they were observing their nocturnal cult festival.” Read more
‘Doctor-hacker’ charged with stealing N31.5m cars (Nation)
A 26-year-old medical doctor, Michael Thompson Williams, was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing two cars worth N31.5million. Williams, of 2667 Hilton Layout, Lekki, was also described as a hacker. Prosecuting Inspector Peter Nwagwu told magistrate Y. Aje-Afunwa that Williams committed the offence on May 10 at about 7:50pm at Ajah, Lagos. He said Williams, on May 10, stole one Porsche car valued at N28 million, belonging to one Mr. Abidogun Adewale. On the same day, the defendant also allegedly stole a Toyota Camry car valued at N3.5 million belonging to Omopeyi Oluwaseun. Read more
Policemen chase, force student to jump off Lagos bridge (Punch)
A 200-level Material Science Engineering student at the Kwara State University, Oluwadara Adedayo, is battling with injuries after he allegedly jumped off the Cele-Okota Bridge in Lagos State. Adedayo was allegedly chased to the bridge by some armed policemen attached to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Lagos State Police Command. Punch Metro learnt that Adedayo, who was currently on Industrial Training in Lagos, was heading towards the Yaba area of the state last Monday when he was accosted by the operatives at Cele bus stop. It was gathered that the cops, after stopping the 24-year-old, decided to check a mobile phone and a modem found on him. Read more
