Ambode okays work on Airport-Oshodi road (Nation)

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is satisfied with the progress of work on the 10-lane Oshodi-Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure Adebowale Akinsanya has said. Ambode, represented by Akinsanya, spoke at the unveiling of a new machine by the contractor, Hi-tech Construction Company, to facilitate delivery of the project. The project, he said, was progressing well, with all the components now at advanced stages of completion.The Wirtgen WR 250 Recycler machine would enable the contractor meet the  December date of delivery. The government is reconstructing the road to meet international standard. Read more

Lagos may vanish in 2050, warns NCF (DailyTrust)

Lagos State may go into extinction in the next 32 years if the devastation occasioned by erosion in the Lekki coastal community was not halted, the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) has warned. NCF, a non-governmental organization, said the Federal Government must, as a matter of national emergency, devise a programme of action to protect the shorelines. Chairman, National Executive Council of the foundation, Chief Ede Dafinone and the Director-General, Dr. Muhtari Aminu-Kano as well as NCF Council member and renowned Environmentalist, Desmond Majekodunmi spoke at the weekend during a press conference on Lagos Beach Erosion. The foundation also presented video evidence to show the speed at which the shoreline has been eroded. Read more

‘Maintain Lagos’ clean records in Mecca’ (Nation)

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has enjoined intending pilgrims to maintain Lagos State’s clean records in the last five years in Saudi Arabia. He gave this advice at a seminar organised for the intending pilgrims on Saturday at the Old Secretariat, Ikeja. Represented by the Commissioner for Home Affairs and Amirul Hajj, Dr AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef, Ambode said the series of lectures, enlightenment programmes and seminars were meant to shape their attitude and understanding of the pilgrimage. The government, he said, had made adequate provision for their accommodation, feeding, transportation, healthcare and others to make the pilgrimage a success. Read more

Lagos begins Revenue House renovation (Guardian)

New grounds have broken on the real estate market as Lagos authorities have acquired the famous Elephant Cement House, a multi-storey office complex situated at Ikeja Central Business District at a cost of N3.1 billion. The building was home to Lafarge Africa Plc, a leading Sub-Saharan Africa building materials company and a subsidiary of LafargeHolcim, owners of the commercial property. Tenants in the flagship property include Lagos government agencies, corporate organisations and leading players in the banking industry, UBA and Stanbic IBTC. Read more

Lawmaker seeks ICT education in schools (Punch)

The senator representing the Lagos East District at the Senate, Gbenga Ashafa, has said education without  Information Communication Technology is inadequate. The senator, who spoke on Friday at the handing over of computers and furniture to the Orimedu Community High School, Orimedu, in the Ibeju  Lekki area of Lagos State, said the need for ICT in Nigerian schools and the ability to use computers effectively must become an essential part of education. He said, “In Nigeria of today, if we take a look at our primary and secondary schools, we will notice that chalkboard and textbooks still dominate classroom activities; there is a need for a change in the status quo.” Read more

Ambode urges Lagos pilgrims to be good ambassadors (Guardian)

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has urged intending pilgrims for the upcoming Hajj to represent the state well, and be good ambassadors in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Ambode made the call on Sunday during a two-day seminar organised by the state for 2018 intending pilgrims at the Old Secretariat Central Mosque, Ikeja, Lagos. Lagos wastewater plants pack up, spark epidemic concerns (Guardian)

Fears that the planned new dawn for Lagos wastewater plants will remain an illusion heightened last week with information that the needed funds are yet to be released for the revamping of the moribund plants. Wastewater Management in Lagos State as the case in other parts of Nigeria is minimal, with only a fraction of wastewater being treated. Sanitation systems currently used in Lagos State include both government and private facilities. A small number of publicly owned plants are available to treat wastewater before it is released into water bodies.The existing facilities serve only a limited part of the population. It has been estimated that about 94 percent of people in Lagos have no access to sanitary toilets. Read more

Save Lagos from beach erosion, environmentalists beg FG (Punch)

Environmentalists have asked the Federal Government, to as a matter of urgency, help the Lagos State Government in protecting the shorelines of the state or risk devastating effects, which will also be felt in many other parts of the country. According to the environmentalists, waves from the Atlantic Ocean are rapidly and at an alarming rate eating away the shorelines and have washed away about 1.5 kilometres of the Lagos shoreline since it began in the 1960s. They raised the alarm that if urgent steps were not taken, Lagos might be under water by the year 2030 and might cease to exist by 2050 like many other cities threatened by climate change globally. Fair for unemployed graduates (Nation)

To combat youth unemployment, the Lagos State Government has organised a job fair for unemployed graduates in the state. The fair was organised by the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment in conjunction with Ist CRT Group on Saturday at Adeyemi Bero Hall at Alausa, Ikeja. About 1,500 graduates participated in the fair, which was also attended by 11 companies. The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs Ganiat Raji, said the fair was organised as a meeting point for job seekers and employers.”The present administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has spent so much on this programme and other initiatives to tackle unemployment in the state. AIB, UNILAG sign pact on use of Laboratory (ThisDay)

The Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) and University of Lagos have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the usage of the agency’s $5.8 million metallurgical laboratory at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.The agreement was signed in Lagos at the weekend. The Commissioner and CEO of the agency, Akin Olateru said the laboratory would provide an opportunity for the university to further its research in that area of metallurgy. The Commissioner noted that it was worrisome that both private and public business organisations in Nigeria expend little or no resource to funding of researches and projects. Read more

Customs loses 2 officers to road accident — Spokesperson (Punch)

The Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Command, said it lost two of its officers in an accident on Badagry/Seme road in Badagry area of Lagos State. Mr Saidu Abdulahi, the Public Relations Officer of the command told the News Agency of Nigeria in Badagry on Monday that the accident involved three of officers of the command. “On July 14, a custom officer, named George, who was driving a Toyota Avalon lost control of his car while approaching the Gbaji Checkpoint on the Badagry/Seme road. 2 pipeline guards murdered, buried in shallow grave in Lagos (Vanguard)

Two guards attached to Topline Security Company, a firm contracted by the Nigerian national Petroleum Corporation , to protect its Pipeline right of way in Lagos, have been murdered and buried in a shallow graves in Ilashe , near ATLAS COVE , in Lagos. Vanguard gathered that the deceased : Bello Williams, popularly called Awilo and Oluwasegun Oluwafemi Olusanya, were hacked to death while on their way get sachet water from a boat that came to supply them water , at the bank of the river, last Wednesday. The company, alleged that the killing was perpetrated by some naval personnel who stormed the Island in two speed boats , shooting sporadically. Read more

Customs officer kills 2 colleagues in Lagos (Punch)

Two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service lost their lives in a tragic accident on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway on Saturday. Punch Metro learnt that the two victims, who were in a Toyota Camry with the number plate, YLA 121 BJ, were at a checkpoint when they were crushed by their colleague, who drove a Toyota Avalon, with number plate, YAB 366 JY. The three officials were reportedly attached to the Seme Border Command, Lagos. While the two crushed customs officers died on the spot, the driver of the Avalon was said to be unconscious at the Intensive Care Unit of the Badagry General Hospital, where he was receiving treatment. Lagos to come alive for NTTF National Junior League (SUN)

Hundreds of junior players across the country will converge in Lagos from July 27 to August 4 for the annual Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) National Junior League which will herald Africa’s elite tournament – ITTF Challenge Nigeria Open For nine days preceding the kick-off of the 2018 Nigeria Open on August 8, the players will slug it out for places in the grand finale on August 4 at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium. 200 players for 2018 Lagos Badminton Classics (Punch)

Over 200 badminton players from 23 countries are expected to feature in the 2018 Lagos International Badminton Classics at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Complex, Rowe Park, Lagos from July 18 to 21. The competition, which is in its fourth edition, has a prize money of $25,000. President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria Francis Orbih told our correspondent that there would be competition in five categories – the men and women singles, men and women doubles and the mixed doubles.
