Ambode: security of life, property my biggest achievements (Nation)

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has said security of lives and property of residents is the biggest achievement of his administration in the last three years. The governor said it was gratifying to note that the state was the safest in Africa. Ambode, who spoke at the inauguration of a Forward Operating Base (FOB) of the Army in Epe, noted that the combined investment of his administration in security and efforts of security agencies had resulted in peaceful atmosphere among residents and visitors. The governor recalled the days of kidnapping, cultism and other security challenges in Ikorodu and Epe axis, saying the activities of criminals, such as militants, had become history in the state. The Good Governance Group (G3), a group of like-minds with the goal of creating awareness and building human capacity aimed at filling the gaps in the political space, yesterday held a voters awareness campaign in Surulere area of Lagos State, enjoining citizens to be active participants in the nation’s democratic experience. The walk began from Babs Animashaun street in Surulere, as members of the group urged citizens to stop complaining on social media but take their destinies in their hands by choosing the right leaders to birth the Nigeria they desire. Some of the banners read: ‘Social media will not help you, only your PVC will help you get the change you desire;’ ‘Don’t just register to vote, step out to vote;’ ‘Please Vote Conscientiously (PVC);’ ‘Don’t be part of the problem, be part of the solution, make your vote count;’ among others. Planners approve Ambode’s smart-city drive, identify missing links (Tribune)

Experts’ opinion is that smart cities start with a smart public infrastructure to deliver the necessary conveniences, among which are; clean water, dependable power, safe gas, and efficient public lighting, good and efficient road networks, drainage, They also believe that with growing urbanisation, sustainable development challenges will be increasingly concentrated in cities, with the need for technology-driven solution. Lagos partners stakeholders on vehicle inspections (DailyTrust)

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Ladi Lawanson has said the state government would partner with relevant stakeholders to enforce the patronage of the newly commissioned computerized vehicle inspection centres. Lawanson stated this on Thursday during the commissioning of the centres in Epe and Agric-Isawo in Ikorodu. It was in continuation of the commissioning of the eight centres which commenced on Wednesday. He said the administration of Governor Akinunwumi Ambode believes in strengthening road safety in the state not only to save lives but to improve the economy of the state. Read more

Association inaugurated in Lagos (Nation)

The Nigeria Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE) has inaugurated the Egbin chapter at Ikorodu, Lagos. It focused on the responsibilities of technologists in the Nigerian power industry. The chapter is to articulate views of Nigerians towards the socio-economic development of the association. Chairman of the chapter, Engr. Awoleye Matthew said: “There is a development programme which will motivate and encourage the member to a greater height. The focus is not only on theory but on how to accomplish the practical aspect and completion of a design.” He urge the state branch and national leadership of the association to formulate policy through which members and intending members should not be interested mainly in obtaining the association’s certificates but must be ready to deploy their wealth of knowledge, skills and resources to achieve the high standard of professionalism the association is aspiring to. Eko disco donates 500 Rain Jackets to LAWMA (Independent)

The management of Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EKEDC) has donated 500 rain jackets to the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in ensuring proper waste management across the State as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) this year. Mr Adeoye Fadeyibi, the Chief Executive Officer of the company at the donation of the items to LAWMA management in Lagos said that the donation was part of the company’s CSR towards a cleaner environment. Fadeyibi, who was represented by Mr Aik Alenkhe, the company’s Chief Human Resources Officer said that the donation was a little way of contributing to the environment where EKEDC do business. Community urges Ikeja Electric to fix transformer (Nation)

Residents of nine Community Development Associations (CDAs) group six under Orudu area Community Development Committee (CDC) at Adiyan Gasline in Ifo Local Governemt Area of Ogun State has raised the alarm over the stealing of the cables of the transformer on Monday, April 23, 2018 by robbers. They said the transformer was purchased by the CDC and was known as Ifesowapo transformer. The residents noted that the incident has subjected the area and its environs to total blackout for over a month. Since the transformer has been taken over by Ikeja Electric and millions of naira are generated from electricity bills by the firm on a monthly basis, it is expected that the firm should bear the responsibility of replacing the cables. But unfortunately, Ikeja Electric has not responded to nor shown any sign of fixing the transformer. Read more

Made in Nigeria returns to Lagos (Nation)

The poetry show, Made in Nigeria, is set to return to Lagos. After touring, the country since October 2016, the show will hit the Lagos stage on June 16 by 1pm and 4pm at TerraKulture. Though it premiered on September 30, 2016 in Abuja, it has been touring the country since then. It premiered in Lagos at the MUSON Centre on December 16, 2016, and is returning by popular demand to Lagos. Written by celebrated performance poet Dike Chukwumerije, Made in Nigeria is the nation’s first performance poetry theatre production. t has 20 poems linked by drama, dance and music, which tell the story of nation’s journey to nationhood. In 120 minutes, the performance tells a story on stage that is indisputably made in Nigeria. Read more

Access Bank CEO inspires Makoko Slum2School kids (Nation)

The Group Managing Director (GMD)/CEO, Access Bank Plc, Herbert Wigwe has visited the Adekunle High School’s Slum2School kids to celebrate this year’s Children’s Day with the students. The visit underscores the bank chief’s belief in the potential of the youths and opportunity for him to inspire the students. Unpaid bill: Lagos hospital detains newborn baby for three months (Punch)

A Lagos couple, Mr Michael and Mrs Roseline Oaikhena, have been denied the custody of their newborn baby, Ighodalo, for three months over an unpaid medical bill of N650,000. Punch Metro learnt that the hospital holding on to the child, Inton Hospital, Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos, had allegedly vowed to put him in an orphanage unless the debt was cleared. Our correspondent gathered that Roseline, a private primary school teacher, had given birth to a set of twins on February 10, 2018, at the Ifako General Hospital, Lagos. The babies, which were premature, were reportedly taken to Inton, where they were put in an incubator at the rate of N300,000 per week. Read more

Policemen allegedly detain hairstylist for looking like gay (Punch)

A hairstylist, Oluwatosin Idowu, has demanded the prosecution of some policemen who allegedly arrested him for looking like a gay. Punch Metro learnt that the 27-year-old, who lived in the Palmgroove, Somolu area of Lagos State, was going to meet a client on Monday in the Ogudu area of the state when the incident happened. Our correspondent learnt that the Epe, Lagos State indigene, had alighted from a BRT vehicle at Ojota when he was accosted by the gun-wielding operatives around 9am. Read more

Court orders psychiatric test for mother who burned her daughter with electric iron (Guardian)

Thirty-year-old woman, Ayo Sheriff, who was remanded in Kirikiri prison for using hot pressing iron to torture her daughter has been granted bail in the sum of N200,000. In a ruling on Monday, the Magistrate, Mrs. O. Sule-Amzat, granted the bail to Sheriff with two sureties in like sum. Sule-Hamzat said the sureties must be gainfully employed and one of them must be a relative. Also, an order that a psychiatric test be conducted on the defendant was also issued and that the result must be presented before the court on the next adjourned date of June 21. Read more

Family raises the alarm over abducted customs officer (Punch)

The family of a customs officer, Rasheed Abdulsalam, have raised the alarm over his alleged abduction by suspected smugglers along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. Punch Metro gathered that Rasheed was attached to the customs’ Federal Operations Unit in Ikeja, Lagos. On Saturday, April 14, 2018, he and his colleagues were said to have gone on an operation after a tip-off that smugglers would be operating that night. They were reportedly attacked by the smugglers at the Toll gate end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. During subsequent shootout with the smugglers, the customs officers were reportedly overwhelmed. Ambode boosts Lagos Polo Club with N50m (ThisDay)

Lagos State, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, has donated N50 million to support the Lagos Polo Club. The Governor, in a letter addressed to the President of the club, Mr. Ade Laoye described Lagos Polo Club as one of the prestigious bodies that have contributed to the socio-cultural and economic development of the state. Ambode recalled that over the years social clubs and service-based organisations have contributed to the development of the state socially and economically and that Lagos State Government values the contributions of these clubs.
