Ambode seeks world bank’s partnership in funding transport, energy, water sectors (Vanguard)

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday called on the World Bank to seriously consider partnership with the State Government in funding key projects in transport, energy and water sectors, saying such collaboration would positively impact the economy of not just the State but the country at large. Speaking at Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja during a courtesy visit by Executive Directors of the Bank led by Mr Patrizio Pagano, Governor Ambode said though the State Government in the last three years had hugely invested in provision of infrastructure across all sectors and sections, but collaboration from the Bretton Wood institution in key sectors in the State would go a long way in boosting the economy and making life comfortable for the people. LASEPA ranks Alimosho noisiest local government area in Lagos (Punch)

Antonio Ayodele, General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, on Thursday rated Alimosho as the noisiest local government area in the state in 2017. Ayodele made the remark at the 3rd Annual Stakeholders Interactive Session on Noise Pollution Control in Lagos State, organised by the agency. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the session is entitled: ”Noise Pollution Abatement Evaluation in an Emerging Smart City – 2 Years Retrospect”. The general manager said that coming after Alimosho were Shomolu, Surulere, Lagos Mainland, Ikeja, Kosofe, Ikorodu, Eti-Osa, Agege, Mushin, among others. Read more

LASG funds residents’ business ideas with N5.22bn (Punch)

The Lagos State Government on Thursday said 6,462 residents with proven business ideas had benefitted about N5.22bn from the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund. The LSETF is an initiative of the state government through which N25bn was earmarked for disbursement over a period of four years to provide entrepreneurs, artisans and traders with capital to boost their business. Speaking at the annual ministerial press briefing of the state government, the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs. Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, said the amount so far disbursed constituted a huge part of the total N5.98bn approved for 8,229 residents. Lagos, Zamfara CPs Rally Support for IGP Idris (Independent)

Edgal Imohimi, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, and Kenneth Ebrimson, his Zamfara State counterpart, have expressed confidence in Ibrahim Idris, Inspector-General of Police, and called on Nigerians to support the Inspector General of Police in his onerous task of policing the nation. They assured the IGP of absolute loyalty and commitment to duty of men and officers of their commands. CP Imohimi in a statement signed by Chike Oti, the Public Relations Officer of the command, noted that the command owes the successes recorded in the fight against crime and criminality in the state to the clear-cut policy objectives and directives of the IGP. 2018 World Communication Day to highlight solutions to fake news (Guardian)

The 2018 World Communication Day that would be celebrated by Catholic faithful throughout the world would proffer solutions to the spread of fake news in the society. Msgr Gabriel Osu, Director, Social Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, in a statement said the day was set apart to appreciate the media practitioners and to bless their work tools. Osu added that it would also be used to deliberate how media Practitioners could use their tools of trade to reach and promote peace in their various societies. He said that the World Communications Day was established by Pope Paul VI in 1967 as an annual celebration that encourages media Practitioners to reflect on the opportunities and challenges that the modern means of social communication afford the church to preach the gospel. FG to reactivate weighbridges, toll gates (Vanguard)

Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, yesterday in Lagos,  disclosed plans by the Federal Government  to reactivate weighbridges across the country, as a result of dilapidated state of the roads caused mainly by heavy duty trucks. A weighbridge is a large set of scales, usually mounted permanently on a concrete foundation that is used to weigh an entire rail or road vehicles and their contents. Making the disclosure at the  Nigeria Economic Summit Group, NESG roundtable on the Nigerian Transport Industry, Fashola also  revealed Federal government’s  plans  to re-introduce toll gates on major dualised federal roads  across  the country. Lagos, NSCDC partner to enforce sanitation laws (Guardian)

The Lagos State government has renewed its partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to ensure the implementation and compliance of environmental laws in the state. This was announced by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Babatunde Durosimi-Etti while receiving the Commandant, Lagos Command of the Civil Defence Corps, Mr. Tajudeen Balogun, in his office. According to Babatunde, enforcement of environmental laws is necessary to achieve a clean, healthy and sustainable environment and prevent epidemics, as a clean and healthy environment is non-negotiable prerequisite for a megacity like Lagos. He declared that Lagos state had strengthened its regulatory agencies such as the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) to enforce compliance to standard and regulations, and curb all unhygienic behavior. NIS cautions Nigerians on illegal migration (Vanguard)

The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS  Seme Command, Lagos, yesterday, cautioned Nigerians to shun illegal migration sponsored by  organs harvesters who masquerade as travelling agents. Giving the admonition at the launch of  ‘Passport to Safe Migration’, at the Seme boarder, the Comptroller, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Seme, Dominic Asogwa, stated that travelling out of the country  without relevant travelling documents was a straight  passport to death. Fashola commissions transmission substation in Lagos (Guardian)

In line with the Federal Government’s policy on incremental power to boost electricity supply in Nigeria, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, recently commissioned a 2x60MVA, 132/33KV Transmission Substation at Odogunyan, Lagos State, to boost supply at Ikorodu and its environs. The Odogunyan substation, which was supposed to have been completed seven years ago for poor funding, the Minister said, is aimed at improving capacity and performance of the Ikeja distribution company (Disco). The substation, he noted, would release close to 90 megawatts (MW) of power to Ikeja Disco starting from next week, and this would allow optimum function of industries and residents around the community, since they would be catered for from a direct feeder. ‘Lagos proactive in healthcare delivery’ (Nation)

The Lagos State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Global Partnership Programme (GPP), Canada, is establishing a bio-containment and bio-safety laboratory, the Commissioner of Health, Dr Jide Idris has said. At the Annual Ministerial Report, he said the lab would be sited at the Lagos Mainland Hospital, Yaba. He said the project was a fall-out from the successful containment of the Ebola outbreak of 2004 by the government. Idris said on completion, the facility would afford the state the opportunity to promptly diagnose diseases of public health importance during routine surveillance and outbreaks of emerging-highly pathogenic infectious diseases or incidents of environmental toxicity towards effective clinical management. Lagos-Badagry Expressway: Residents, commuters’ tales of woe (Vanguard)

Residents and commuters plying the Okokomaiko-Badagry end of Lagos-Badagry Expressway have continued to lament the deplorable state of the road. The road is in a bad shape. Now, a journey that ought to take less than one hour from Okokomaiko to Badagry takes  about three hours. The ever busy road, incidentally an international route to other West African countries, has been abandoned by both the Federal and Lagos State governments. It is instructive to note here that prior to the administration of the All Progressives Congress, APC, at the centre, palliative work was usually carried out on the road by previous governments. CJ: Lagos courts to go paperless soon (Nation)

Paper and manual filing of court documents will soon end at the Lagos State High Court, the Chief Judge of Lagos, Justice Opeyemi Oke, has said. She said the court would soon go digital with the deployment of an electronic platform. Also, Justice Commissioner Adeniji Kazeem said a technology-driven judiciary would enable the state to achieve better efficiency and quicker results. They spoke yesterday at the opening of the technical sessions at the Annual Law Week of the Lagos branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), with the theme: Human Capital and the Legal Profession in the 21st Century. Chrisland Schools pledges to maintain quality (Punch)

The Managing Director of Chrisland School, Mrs. Ibironke Adeyemi, has given stakeholders the assurance that the management of the school will continue to be committed to ensuring all-round education for its pupils. Adeyemi, who spoke at a briefing organised to mark the 40th anniversary of the school in Opebi, Lagos, noted that the management had given out full scholarship awards to some students who could not afford the fees every year. “We give scholarship awards to the best performing students and those that cannot afford the school fees. For instance, at the school in Victoria Garden City, we gave one to a child from the orphanage because he was brilliant but could not afford the fees. Drivers hail Navy for clearing Apapa traffic gridlock (Nation)

Major marketers, tanker drivers and transport owners have praised the Western Navy Command for clearing the Apapa traffic gridlock. They said there was no longer a logjam on the highways leading into Apapa. A tanker driver simply identified as Mallam Ibrahim said since the Navy took over the operations, it has deployed an effective logistic strategy involving the use of call card signed by the commander for authentication of trucks due for loading and passage into the Apapa area. He said though there were problems, the system is working and as it has reduced the turnaround time for loading and delivery of products. Read more

4 feared dead as police, task force storm church (Nation)

Four persons were feared yesterday when the Lagos State Task Force on Land Grabbers led by the police stormed a church in Makoko, Yaba. The task force, some hoodlums and the police were said to have stormed The Act of Apostle Church over a land dispute. They reportedly came with over 30 police vans from different divisions, including Adekunle and Ikeja. They allegedly broke down the fence of the church, and set its hall ablaze. They were said to have shot sporadically, leaving many injured. Four of the injured were said to have died at press time. Residents milled last night discussing the incident. Some were in tears. Man allegedly steals N8m filters, burns shop (Punch)

A man, Benedict Ekeoch, has been arraigned before an Ebute-Meta Magistrate’s Court on two counts of stealing and arson. He was alleged to have stolen filters valued at N8m and set fire to a shop. The charges read, “That you, Benedict Ekeocha, on December 21, 2017, around 5.50pm, at Trade Fair Complex, Ojo, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did steal Oil and Gas Filters, valued at N8,177,189, property of one Jenkins Uwagbai. “That you, Benedict Ekeocha, did wilfully and unlawfully set fire to a shop belonging to one Jenkins Uwagbai.” Read more

Hoodlums attack Lagos officials, pressmen during two-storey building demolition (Vanguard)

Officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, and pressmen were, yesterday, attacked during demolition of a two-storey building under construction in Mushin axis. Vanguard gathered that the officials had served the owner of the building stop work notices, asking him to adhere to extant building laws in the state. In order to prevent loss of life and property, the officials stormed the community and pulled down the structure sited at 77, Ogunmokun Street, Mushin Local Government. Irked by the demolition, thugs allegedly attacked government officials, who were escorted to the community by police officers, and vandalised no fewer than six vehicles. Read more

Landlord’s children allegedly beat up couple over rent (Punch)

Two siblings were on Thursday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court for allegedly beating up a couple over unpaid rent. The duo – Isiaka Olaleye, a 43- year-old businessman; and Olaide Olaleye, a 35-year-old fashion designer – were arraigned before Magistrate F.F. George on three counts bordering on breach of peace, conspiracy and assault, which they pleaded not guilty to. According to the police prosecutor, Godwin Awase, the defendants committed the offences on May 6 in the Onipanu area of Lagos State. Read more
